Do you tell your partner a little too much?

Sharing daily life events with your loved one is fine, but it can also lead to problems in your relationship if you go overboard with it.

"I have always been frank with my husband and would discuss about a particular colleague of mine who I was very good friends with. However with time I realised that it didn't go down too well with my husband and in no time he suspected me of having an affair with him and divorced me," says Prerona Saha, a 31-year-old advertising professional.

While it is believed that one must confine in his or her partner, sometimes sharing too much information might also ruin your relationship. Says marriage counsellor Dr. Sanjoy Mukerji, "Many a times couples do not know where to draw a line in their relationship. Either they end up doing too much or too little for one another and this is where the problem begins. Balance is crucial for a healthy marriage or a relation."

What you should share

Figure out what are the things that will not harm your relationship. This you can do by understanding what it that your husband and wife is comfortable knowing. It can be anything from discussing about colleagues you are close to at work, office-related problems, disputes with in-laws, family members or talks about intimacy, physical relationship between the two of you etc. Says Avira Karmakar, a 28-year-old banker, "In my three years of marriage, I have realised that I can discuss about my mother-in-law openly with my husband. Normally your spouse may get defensive when you show your dislike towards his or her parents. But my husband is open to hearing me talk about her and often gives advice on how to handle situations involving her as well. This has worked out favourable in our marriage. Similarly, if he has any problems with my parents or family members, I give him advice too."

What you should not share

Opines Dr Mukerji, "Ex-boyfriend/girlfriend, hurtful things involving parents or family members, or embarrassing things about your spouse are some of the things that you should not share with your partner. Not only does it hurt your partner's sentiments but also may lead to a problem or end in your marriage or relationship.

Dos and don'ts of sharing in a relationship

Do
Share information about people at work. Not only will it help your husband or wife to understand them better but will also drive away insecurities if any.

Share little secrets. It's always nice to talk about what you and your gal pals are planning to do over the weekend or if your boy gang is planning a night out.

Share if you are planning to throw a surprise party for your parents or children. You can also involve your spouse or partner in the plan.

Don't

Don't give away passwords of social networking sites or bank pin numbers. Though you might trust your partner completely, it can be misused as well.

Don't discuss everything related to money. There are certain things that you should exclusively keep with yourself, no matter what.

Don't talk about an ex with your partner is not comfortable with it. It may lead to suspicion or problems in your relationship.

Things your man doesn't find funny

There are some things you can never joke about with your man. Debarati S Sen finds out more about a couple of these super-sensitive topics.

It is cool to clown around once in a while and for most guys a woman with a whacky sense of humor means a lot and they really appreciate it. Men are proud of the fact that they have an ability to laugh at themselves, and can really dish out some funny lines for the benefit of others. But there are some topics that men are sensitive about and they would really hate being laughed at. Be careful when you broach these topics when you are with your man, if you want your relationship to go somewhere!

No matter how much is written in fashion magazines about how sexy a bald-head can be, men never really believe it. "Most of my male friends feel that chrome domes are not sexy. There have been times when I have regretted talking about their thinning hair because this topic has invariably upset them," says Soumya Nanda, an HR executive.

Abhijit Gupta, a software personnel agrees, "I am 28 and my hair has started thinning already. I really do not like being the butt of jokes at parties and get-togethers."

Dr Kersi Chawda, president of Bombay Psychiatric Society and a consultant at Hinduja Hospital, says with a chuckle, "Of course men don't like to be told anything about their thinning hair or bald head. It hurts them just like it would hurt any girl if she was told that her breasts were too small."

Gupta adds, "It does upset me when my girlfriend mentions it. I know that I am balding and I really do not need a woman reminding me about it."

Another thing that men usually hate being told is that their pay packets are too small. Dr Chawda says, "This may lead to major psychological complications in relationships. Men have been brought up with the notion that they are breadwinners in the family. But when they see that they are unable to fulfill that they hurt inside and hate being reminded about it. They feel extremely insulted when their partner mentions it or taunts him even jokingly. Some men who are confident can handle it, otherwise this factor may damage relationships."

Shraddha Kamath, a research student agrees, "Though it sounds a little ancient but it is true. Men just cannot digest the fact that it is okay to earn less than their spouse or girlfriend. I have a friend whose wife earns much more than he does. They had been seeing each other for 12-13 years before they got married but now the fact that she earns more is taking a toll on their relationship." If this isn't dealt with soon relationships may take a severe beating and ultimately die a premature death say experts.

"I think we men feel totally emasculated when our salaries are less than that of our partners. I know it is not right but I am embarrassed that my girlfriend out-earns me. I do appreciate her alpha-female status but I don't like being a beta-boy toy for her. She once joked about it saying, 'you could be a house-husband' and though she had not intended to insult me, I had hated it. I had hated her for saying that. This is no laughing matter," states a young media person on conditions of anonymity.

"Of course men don't like to be told anything about their thinning hair or bald head. It hurts them just like it would hurt any girl if she was told that her breasts were too small." - Dr Kersi Chawda

Kitchen tricks for daily use

Reviving crystallized honey or cutting veggies safely, we have it all here

Here are some tips you can use the next time you face these usual kitchen troubles.

Honey crystals: Honey does not usually go bad, but sometimes if the bottles been sitting unused for too long, the honey may get crystallized. If this happens, just place the honey jar in some warm to hot water for about 10-15 minutes and it will go back to it lusciously smooth and drizzly state.

Veggie cutting: Kitchen beginners may hurt themselves when they try to cut round veggies like potatoes and tomatoes. To avoid this from happening, all you need to do is cut a thin slice of potato to create a flat surface and then use it as a base so that the potato doesn't roll.

Make sweeteners: Don't you simply hate it when you get a clump of sugar granules at the bottom of your tea or coffee cup? Or when you have a hard time trying to dissolve the granules into lemonade when there are guests sitting outside? Stop worrying now, just make simple sugar syrup by boiling 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water and reducing it to half. Use this instead of sugar now.

I don't want to work after marriage

In a reverse trend of sorts, women want to stay at home after marriage. And the husbands don't seem too happy with the trend

They say marriages are made in heaven — well this can hardly be disputed, considering the grand scale of weddings. But what happens next? Compatibility, it turns out, isn't something that comes as part of the 'made in heaven' package. You have to work towards it.

And this is no ordinary word. Compatibility can mean anything from understanding each other (personally and professionally), respecting each other for who he/she is, to even 'adjusting'.

Adjusting — that's the key word here. And in a marriage, this word usually conjures up images of a woman giving up her dreams and aspirations. Remember the time, when women would want to work post marriage, but the husband and the family would quash the request with 'women don't work after marriage, they need to take care of home' dialogue?

Now, the exact opposite is happening. Women now want to give up their careers, and sit at home to enjoy a laid-back life and 'give more time to their marriage'. And this idea has the husbands breaking into a sweat. It has become such an issue that some young couples are even on the verge of separating, just because the wife, (who the husband thought was ambitious), wants to stop working after marriage.

"This classmate of mine from engineering got placed in a good company, and last year, she tied the knot. Not wanting a simple temple wedding, she took a huge loan for the marriage expenses. And post the wedding, she wanted to take a break. But when she spoke to her husband about giving up her job, he flatly refused because of the loan pressure. In the end, she was forced to work," says Rasika Bhalerao, an entrepreneur.

Monetary issues (as the above instance points out), though a major part, seem to be a secondary issue. The main worry for the men though is — what will she do with all the time? 'God! She sure is going to turn to nagging' — that's something one of the to-be husbands told us, when his fiancee announced her wish to quit her job post tying the knot with him.

"It may sound funny, but it's not! I am dreading what she will be up to with all the time in the world. Ok, I know the money I earn is going to be blown up. Even if I try to be cool about it, this is not going to help our relationship. What can I expect when I get home after work? Ok no. It wouldn't be about my expectations — rather, it will be about her expectations from me when I return home after work. She will have had all the time to plan her expectations from me throughout the day. That's not something I would want my marriage to become. I think it should be of equals and about equals. Only then can there be proper understanding," he says, requesting anonymity.

Consultant psychiatrist Dr Sona Kakkar, who specialises in marital therapy, confirms that this trend of women quitting jobs after wedlock is on the rise and is upsetting husbands. "Around five to six young couples come to me every month with this problem, and they say it's 'wrecking havoc in their marital life'. I wouldn't agree with the monetary part of the issue (husbands wanting wives to work to bring some money home), but I do agree that husbands have a problem with this trend because that leaves the wives with too much time and in turn, their expectation from the relationship/marriage increases manifold — something men can't handle very easily," the doctor says.

"I had a young couple visit me recently with the same issue. The two had met at their workplace and fallen in love. The husband told me that the girl's interest, not only in her career but also in his was what drew him to her. They got married, and then, the axe fell. The girl quit her job, saying she wanted to give more time to the marriage and him. The husband found this difficult to handle and told me he never imagined her as a 'domesticated' woman! He said he had found her ambitious and hence, compatible. But post marriage, everything about her changed. She turned clingy and expected a lot of his time once he was back from work," Dr Kakkar shares.

The case took an ugly turn when the couple decided to separate, since the wife began to feel that her husband had "no time" for her. The husband, in turn, thought "she had turned too domesticated" for his liking.

"That's when they came to me. I counselled them and explained that they're two different individuals, who need to learn to respect each other's priorities. Thankfully, they reconciled. In general, I think men like to have their own space, have a routine, a structure. And they expect their partners to have the same, so there is mutual understanding as well as personal space," she concludes.

Debunking the first night myths

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Maret 2014 | 18.47

First night is always anticipation and aspiration fully loaded. But one should go about first night experiences carefully and in a matured manner.

In an arranged marriage, there will be too many preconceived notions and too many expectations regarding marriage, in particular consummation. One of the things being the first night myths. Here's a list of things not to expect on your first night

A rocking sex
Come on. Think practical. Both of you are too tired to do anything after all those rituals and the reception. So give each other some benefit of doubt to each other and not expect any rocking performance. Try to be happy even if it were some nice sessions of cuddling and intimacy.

You need to experience orgasm
This also is like expecting too much from each other. Because giving each other the climactic pleasure comes after some time. So allow yourself to learn more on his or her preferences and turn on points and wait a bit for the momentum to pick up.

You need to fake an orgasm
This also is avoidable. Since this is going to be the beginning of your journey to the most intimate moments, instead of faking all types of ecstatic emotions, just be romantic and talk about your preferences and know-how about sexual positions.

You should talk sex
First night is meant to be an ice breaker. So, even if you do not talk sex it does not mean that your sexual life will not take off. In reality, it is not like that. Enjoy those moments together and just chill. Try to spend some cozy moments together and try to figure out each other's likings.

It ought to be the man first
This is another myth. What if the man is expecting some initiative from the woman. So, be open and share love and not preconceived notions that you have been fed with.

How to maintain a library at home

For a bibliophile, parting away with books is one tough proposition. A well stocked and a well arranged library of books makes sense in this case.

Mark a room as reading room
The reading room will not only have a library which will house all those precious books in the shelves, but will give a very scholarly and erudite feeling to the entire house. So mark one room and work on the interiors of the room accordingly. Your library room should have a beautiful table lamp, a very nice study table and a pen stand, a socket to connect your desktop or tablet to wi fi connection.

Plan the shelves
Apart from arranging the books in alphabetical order think about things like in priority of which books you frequently read and what genre or authors interest you the most etc. This will make you recollect about where a particular book is placed. Also, this will let you arrange shelves in order.

Make it well ventilated
Ventilation is very important, both for the reader as well the books. Allow enough light to enter the library in the day time. Arrange lights so that there is enough light in the room since shelves might block more light than the usual empty walls.

Periodically clean the shelves
If not cleaned, books may gather dust. This is not healthy for books only. Avoid keeping too many dog eared books in your library. They would take away the charm from the well arranged library.

Book Review: Tick-tock, We’re 30

Publisher: Westland Ltd

Category: Fiction

Price: Rs 250

Pages: 402

Author: Milan Vohra

The Sarva Niketan( S.N) gang is back together after a decade, and they're all camped in pajama-wala uncle's house, whose most enduring image is that of a 'mad' dog barking its head off.

Lara Bagai of the S.N gang in Delhi is the last to turn thirty, and this ragtag bunch is here for the reunion they'd planned for when the last from their group would be hitting the big three. Like Sita calls it, the OTWT,' Oh Teri, We're Thirty!' event.

The reunion has Lara upbeat and all prepped up. But there's another pact that, sadly, coincides with this one. Made one evening when Lara was sure she was wasted, the pact had both Nishad and Lara agreeing to marry each other if they were still on the shelf by the time they had both turned thirty.

The last thing Lara would have thought then was the possibility that this could ever come true, so besotted she was with Ranndeep, her alpha male biker boyfriend. What hope in hell did Nishad, the ever so correct guy, have with that stud around? But heck, she's thirty in a few days' time. She's single. Ranndeep turned out to be a douchebag. Nishad is single too, and, worse, hasn't forgotten about the pact. Something has to be done because Nishad is "completely wrong" for her.

Bring on Perzaan. The dishy Turkish bartender and flame eater. Lara's ersatz boyfriend. For the week that the SN gang is in the house, Perzaan will play the no-nonsense, suave, deal-clincher banker. If Lara's spoken for then the pact comes undone. Or does it? Does she pull it off? Does Perzaan? Or does Nishad see through this charade? But that's only the main story; at pajama-wala uncle's house there are plenty other sideshows playing out too. Old flames are fanned and rekindled, strange pairings happen, sexual orientations get defined, and sexual dysfunctions get corrected! A full house, in short.

Then Sita foists Kalyani on the reunion team, and the latter drives the rest up the wall. Except Sita, of course. He doesn't get it. Aunty Nair, ,however, seems to know what's best for her son. Only Coconut Kumari for her Sita is her constant refrain. But, who is she? No one has the foggiest idea who Aunty is referring to. And, given Aunty's fragile mental condition, they even wonder if Coconut Kumari is for real. Then the penny drops.

Full of hijinks and hysteria, whisky and weed, food orgies and trips down memory lane, pranks and showdowns, Tick-tock, We're 30 proceeds at an amazingly brisk pace.

There is enough happening in these 400-odd pages. The characters are splendidly sketched out---from the perennially constipated Thin Rita to glad eye, Sai. Chances are that you'll have a visual profile of each one of them in your mind's eye while reading this book. High on humour and vernacular colloquialisms, you will somehow not grudge the fact that the book is a tad too long. After all, you'd still want to know who each one will end up with and how. You'll also wonder how such a disparate set of characters can be so cohesive too.

Milan writes simply and for India's first Mills and Boon author, her prose is surprisingly devoid of maudlin mush and syrupy sentimentality, though given the theme, it could so easily have gone down that road.

I hope that Oh fuck, we're forty is in the cans too. On the downside, if this book has any serious flaws, it is the way Faviyo is made to sound so permanently horny. Unnecessary.

Book Review: DareBone's Big Break

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Maret 2014 | 18.48

Book: DareBone's Big Break
Authors:
Gleeson Rebello, MD, and Jamie Harisiades
Publisher: SDP Publishing

It's large, it's colourful and it's attractive. It's the kind of book that even draws an adult to go through and, before you realise it, you've picked up something new.

Its main author, Gleeson Rebello, is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon born and brought up in Goa. He is currently a consultant in the department of orthopedic surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, and on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School.

The book describes itself as "a tale of trauma, treatment, and recovery in rhyme". It deals with a story from everyday life: a child gets injured on the playground, and ends up in the emergency room.

Rebello says his attempt is to "educate without intimidating" and "entertain without underestimating". So this book packs in poetry, humour and, importantly, medical accuracy.

DareBone is the boy who suffers his first major injury - a broken elbow. We meet him together with his "wise-cracking sidekick", the dog Wag-A-Bone.

Given the authors' medical backgrounds, DareBone not surprisingly meets a number of "medical heroes", including the orthopedic surgeon, as he journeys through surgery and recovery.

"The book was written with the aim of raising the bar in terms of explaining the nuts and bolts of everyday medical practice to a smarter generation of children without underestimating their ability to pick up complex concepts. A secondary aim of the book is to make medicine and biology 'cool'," Rebello said in an email interview.

He sees the book as "very technical from an orthopedic standpoint but at the same time funny and easy to comprehend." It is aimed at children of 4-10 years, as well as their parents and healthcare professionals or educationists who deal with children of that age.

"The response to the book has been very encouraging both from healthcare- and non-healthcare-related professionals. It took two years to write it once I thought of the idea.... (There also was) interacting with a lot of frightened children with broken bones in the emergency room and my clinic, who were mostly afraid because of lack of knowledge of what was to follow," Rebello said.

This is planned to be the first of several books from Rebello, who partnered for this job with Jamie Harisiades. They will speak about common childhood conditions like allergy, autism, asthma, and obesity. Rebello is also working on a similar book on childhood obesity and also create an app out of 'DareBones Big Break'.

Originally published in the US, the book is now available as an ebook on Kindle through Amazon in India (amazon.in) for $4.99.

Rebello has trained at the Goa Medical College, Christian Medical College in Vellore and the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, before he joined Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, as a research fellow and on a staff position in 2008. His father, Francis M. Rebello was closely associated with a local Konkani newspaper in Goa, founded through public donations in the 1970s.

Not surprisingly, Rebello says he caught the writing bug "right from my schooldays". "Every doctor has thousands of stories inside him. The story of his professional life is but a collection of stories of his patients' lives."

Career-oriented girls avoid sex risk

Teenage girls and young women aged 14-19 who are focused on their careers are less likely to be sexually active, a study has indicated.

Such girls have higher levels of maturity and more confidence in their beliefs, noted researchers from University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Senior psychology student Kelly Arnold, under the supervision of assistant psychology professor Aurora Torres, monitored posts on Internet forums used by teenage girls to assess their degree of maturity and confidence related to their sexual behaviour.

Arnold then categorised them according to their attitudes about sex.

The attitudes toward teenaged girls engaging in sexual behaviour were categorised as either believing sexual activity was wrong, believing it was OK or having already become active but feeling guilty about it.

She noted that each girl's attitude towards adolescent sexual behaviour and observed what positions they took on the forums and whether they gave advice or took it.

"The more mature and confident they were, the less likely they were to be engaged in risk-taking behaviour such as sex," Arnold observed in a report on Medical Xpress website.

The decision to delay sexual activity may be a product of having a future-oriented time perspective, she added.

"If you choose to abstain, you are protecting your future goals but you may have as a result some negative pressures right now" due to peer pressure and media portrayals of sex, she said.

According to Arnold, the definition of what constituted sexual activity among this age group was very narrow and knowledge of the risks associated with any sexual contact was limited.

Cure that dandruff naturally

Dandruff is an increasing problem today and I'm sure we all are tired of using chemicals and shampoos on our hair that say they will erase the dandruff only to give temporary relief. Listed below are natural ways to deal with those itchy scales on your head.

Apple cider vinegar: The acidity of apple cider vinegar changes the pH of your scalp, making it harder for yeast to grow. This helps in reducing dandruff.

Baking soda: Wet your hair and then rub a handful of baking soda vigorously into your scalp. Don't use shampoo. Baking soda reduces fungi that can cause dandruff.

Coconut oil: Massage 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil into your scalp and leave it overnight. Wash off the oil the next day with a mild shampoo.

Lemon: Massage 2 tablespoons of lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Then stir 1 teaspoon lemon juice into 1 cup water and rinse your hair with it after shampooing. Let the lemon water be the last rinse. Lemon's acidity helps balance the pH of your scalp, which helps keeps dandruff at bay.

Garlic: Garlic's anti-fungal properties are perfect for eliminating dandruff-causing bacteria. Massage your scalp with crushed garlic and honey before washing.

What Indian men want in a wife

If you are a career-oriented girl, who follows the news and watches IPL for the game and not the cute players, then congratulations!

You are the prospective bride that Indian men are looking for, says a survey. After a survey on what women don't want in men, Shaadi.com has come up with another survey that focuses on what men want in their prospective wives.

Commenting on the survey results, Gourav Rakshit, chief operating officer, Shaadi.com said, "The online poll received over 8,500 responses. The results indicate that women want a life partner who they are compatible with, who are settled and financially stable. Men want a partner who can be a good friend and shares the same tastes."

Career oriented girls
According to the survey, 83.5% men said they would want a partner 'who is career-oriented'.

"I don't think it would be fair on my part to not allow my wife to work. My work takes up most of my time. I leave for office at 8am and return at 9pm. I'm out for 13 hours every day. My wife will go mad staying alone for so long. Then, to pass her time, she will go shopping and waste money. It is better to have a double income and then spend than to have a single income and spend twice the amount," says Ajay Singh, a management trainee.

For Ravi Kumar, senior officer, sales, "Having a career-oriented wife will not only add to our income, but will also help in my career decisions. I can't share my work-related problems with somebody who is not working or who doesn't understand my job. If I am thinking of switching companies, then she can help me with the decision. But someone who is not interested in having a career, will have no say in my professional life as long as I'm getting a salary."

Should appreciate cricket, not the cute players
Cricket is religion in India and couples are known to have fights for not sharing a mutual interest in cricket. With the IPL season around the corner, men definitely have cricket on their mind and 76.6% of them would want a partner who would "love to watch IPL for the game and not for a cute player".

For Nikhil Arora, a web developer, "It is impressive when girls talk about cricket. But the moment they start giving lame reasons like - 'Oh that player is cute' or 'I like that player so I watch the match' - the whole impression is ruined. There is more to cricket than just the cute players. My ex-girlfriend used to pray for the rival team to win. She never supported my favourite team because there was always some cute player in the opposing team. That was ridiculous. I won't tolerate that in my wife. Either have no interest in the game at all or be interested in the game and not in the guy (player)."

Should watch news, have views
While some men want a cricket-loving partner, 73.8 % men admitted that they would prefer partners "who like to keep themselves updated about the latest news." "I don't want my partner to read tomes on the latest issues, but she should be aware of major events in the country and outside. I don't want her to know the minute details, like who won from which seat or by how many seats in the elections, but she should know about the topics being discussed frequently in the news and our peer groups. I don't want her to sound lame," says Sushant Sharma, a web developer.

Colleagues cannot be life partners
While office romance could have a few advantages, like, getting to spend time together and your lover being right in front of you all the time, it can also have a disadvantage. According to the survey, 66.1% men don't want a partner from the same organization. "Working with your wife in the same organization could be dangerous. I will not marry any of my office colleagues. Getting scolded in front of your wife, or getting less increment than her will definitely hurt my ego. I will not see her as a life partner then. In fact, she'll be a competitor for me, which might lead to fights and arguments, and I clearly don't want that," says Aditya Roy*, a bank manager.
While it would be a matter of competition for some, others, like Shashank Kumar, an engineer, feels, "Having your wife as a colleague would mean taking office gossip home. I will not feel like I am away from work. Even if I love my office, I would definitely need a break. That will not be possible if we both work in the same organization. Also, if somebody says anything to my wife, I'll not tolerate that and one of us may end up losing our job. So, it is better to not have a colleague as your wife."

What are the most annoying traits in girls?

Get out of the world of reality TV shows
80% men in the survey said, "Women obsessed with reality TV shows" are annoying. "Do you think real life has less drama than reality shows?" asks Kishore Singh, a software engineer. "Imagine you are talking to your wife over the phone, and she cuts your call when her favourite reality show starts. My ex-girlfriend was like that. She would not receive my call or reply to my messages when Bigg Boss was on. I had a tough time. She was so involved with the show that even when we were out or talking on the phone, she would discuss it. Like, seriously? I had enough of her TV drama and can't tolerate someone with similar tastes again," says Ashish Ranjan*,
a deputy area manager.

Get off the phone
Another thing that men don't like about girls is their constantly being on the phone. The survey said, "78.2% men find women who are always on the phone irritating." According to Siddharth Singh, a management trainee, "This habit of always being on the phone is quite irritating. I don't understand, in ladkiyon ke pass itni baatein aati kahan se hain. If your partner is constantly on the phone, apart from the phone bill, what I fear the most is her sharing too much with her friends. Aur phir doston ki toh aadat hoti hai advice dene ki - tu aisa kar toh tera husband tujh pe aur kharch karega. Also, when I am around, I would want her to spend maximum time with me, and not on phone. And when I am not around, she can visit her friends or do something productive."

Food photographer gets no likes from men and women
There is one thing that both men and women find irritating - clicking and uploading food pictures. While 36.5% women (in the last survey) said they don't like it when men upload food pictures, 74.7% men find this habit in women quite irritating. "I am a big foodie. I will not wait for my partner to click the food first and then allow me to eat it. Once, my girlfriend and I went out for ice cream. She didn't let me eat it because she wanted to click it from every angle. Then, there was some issue in uploading it so she made me wait more. I had to beg to her as the ice cream was melting. If you don't want to have it, at least let me!" says Amar Gupta, a media professional.

Are you an ace kisser?

A good kiss can lead to better and hotter things as they progress. To be a sensational kisser, you have to be in control.

Suppose you and your partner have just started kissing and you are about to shift your gears to a deeper kiss, then you should gently start to take the lead by placing your hands on either side of her face and guiding your lips in. When you cup her face in your palms during the kiss, you control the amount of pressure of your mouth on her and she also feels the warmth of your hand on her skin.

You should be at least a little vocal during your lovemaking and post lovemaking about how kissing her turns you on. You should let her know that she has an exciting effect on you and her breath makes you all the more crazy for her. It is important to not only tell your girl how gorgeous she is, but also that she is great kisser. Women also do have egos and flattery hurt no one.

Strive to give the right pressure of your lips on hers. You do not have to have luscious lips, you do not have to be Mr. Macho and you do not have to have a flat stomach and cute butt. These are not qualifications to be a good kisser. What is needed is the interest to make your woman feel nice. Your mind is the biggest sex organ and your lips are the twin warriors in the game of love and lust.

Practice makes you perfect. To incorporate new kissing techniques, you can look in a mirror and watch yourself kiss your arm or hand. Imagine how the heat of her lips will feel on yours, how arousing her breath will be, how sweet her saliva will taste and try to imagine every texture and aspect of her lips. This may sound silly but when you are totally in it and concentrate on the sensation, you will get more confidence and flow during the actual kiss.

A woman's body is the free range of sensitive zones, which are kiss worthy. You can kiss her earlobe or graze your lips behind her ears. You can softly place your lips on the tip of her nose and give her a cute kiss. The kiss, which you can lay on the back of her neck, can be really romantic to her.

You make sure that in deep kissing (French kissing), you do not cause harm to her. She should not pass out by the force of your kisses. You should tilt to your head to one side while kissing so that her nose is not blocked.

A good kisser is recognized for his sexy breath. Stay away from odorous food like onions, garlic, fish etc when you know you will kiss her. Make sure that you brush your teeth or floss before going out on a date with her. If you have to eat a meal with her, see that you have a mint with you that you can pop in after you have finished eating.

An exceptional kisser is skilled at French kissing. He is confident that the magic of his tongue can do to amazing things to any woman. As an exceptional kisser, try and keep her guessing about your moves. Kiss her a little, look at her eyes and stroke her face or hair. Then go for a lip-lock again as you caress her sweet spots. Leave her lips and look at her with wanton lust or desire. You will see the same sort of magnetism in her eyes because she has been left high and dry for a moment.

8 Weird things men like in women

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 27 Maret 2014 | 18.47

Men are crazy. And they get crazier when they see you approach them in those red pumps and skinny jeans with a baggy and casual tee in style and confidence.

Although there are a thousand things that make you irresistible, here are the top most unbelievable ones:

1. No make-up: Oops. Sorry girl. There's a great chance that your guy hasn't even noticed your smokey eyes or the new bronzer on your face. Save money and turn him on!

2. Lingerie that doesn't match: And you thought you should pair your lacy, satin purple panties with a purple bra? Show him that you are unprepared and yet give in to his desires and make yourself hotter!

3. Wit: You thought it was all about physical contact? Crack a joke or flash your smile and he's sure to get wooed! Tip: It's better still if you are game even for jokes that are played on you. And why not? It just proves how self-assured you are.

4. Curvy is sexy: He doesn't like flat abs and zero sizes. Men love love-handles.

5. Intelligence, confidence, emotional maturity and sexual openness: Flaunt your real self (sans the gloss), support him when he is down, talk dirty and show your sensual attitude, and girl, you've got him!

6. Wearing a baggy tee to bed: Stay casual and he'll be more comfortable in your company. Don't intimidate him by being prim always or sounding like a know-it-all.

7. Unkempt hair: Whoa, why get prim and proper when your man likes your out-of-the-bed hair or smudged kohl eyes?

8. Eye contact: Make yourself irresistible by looking at his eyes and putting across your point. Don't be shy.

Book Review: Bonsai Kitten

Book Review: Bonsai Kitten

Author: Lakshmi Narayan

Publisher: Lead Start Publishing, Jufic Books

Pages: 296

"I am nothing but a Bonsai Kitten!"- Divya in Lakshmi Narayan's 'Bonsai Kitten'

The author chooses an interesting phrase to describe the condition of the 'modern' Indian woman in a society that still feels a bit uneasy to imagine her as an individual of independent thinking and free spirit. Lakshmi Narayan's debut novel tells us the story of Divya, a representative of all women whose aspirations are mowed down by the wheels of patriarchy before they can turn into reality.

Bonsai Kitten: A metaphor

Like the Bonsai, nothing but an artistic 'representation' of nature that puts miniature or dwarfed plants of different species together to create an impression of a 'stunted tree' and placed like an ornamental object somewhere in the living room; the woman of the house too is believed or rather compelled to redesign herself in a manner vis-a-vis the demands of the husband or what they call 'The Lord'. The metaphor, however, finds its source in a satirical website called bonsaikitten.com which claims to give you a set of instructions on how to grow a kitten in a jar. The process, similar to how a bonsai is given shape involves moulding of the bones of the kitten encased in a jar. What followed was a series of petitions by animal rights organisations and the website was soon shut down. Coming to the book, the protagonist Divya situates herself in a position much like the 'bonsai kitten' as far as her family or society at large is concerned.

Tam-Brahms and prejudices

Ramesh Swaminathan, "an engineer with the superaddition of an MBA...was personable in a typically lean-tall-fair-bespectacled-coconut oil-haired-Tam-Brahm way" was finalised upon as the most suitable groom to an Arts graduate, Divya. The author lets us in into the dynamics of a marriage proposal in a South Indian Brahmin family that weighs upon and debates on a lot considerations before dispensing a nod of approval to a union of two individuals. The grounds on which Divya's other suitors are dismissed are many including, "contempt for the merchant class" that "makes poppadams for a living," that businessman who looks more like a "suspected TB patient" to the lecturer in English at Annamalai University who is Divya's first cousin and uncle. On the one hand they try to categorise themselves as the "progressive" Brahmins who are critical of age-old "consanguineous unions" but at the same time wish to compensate for their daughter's "dusky complexion" termed a "tragedy" with a "cash settlement" to the groom's family at the time of marriage. All prejudices, stereotypes and conservatism that many families thrive on or live to justify are unapologetically discussed in Narayan's debut where the narrative follows the vein of a social satire.

Delhi-Mumbai-Singapore-Delhi

Divya's journey from Delhi to Mumbai to Singapore and the uneven transition in timelines apparent in the non-linear narrative style points to the discovery of a new self in the protagonist. When Ramesh would be busy with official tours overseas, Divya would either find solace in her daughter Latika or seek refuge in writing books for children (that would later go on to becoming widely read and appreciated literary work). Oblivious of his wife's loneliness and her desire to be with a family that does not have the husband missing from the frame always, Ramesh falls for a Chinese woman in Singapore. After her daughter Latika's death, the cruelty with which she is thrown out of a marital life she had all along struggled to make peace with shatters Divya to pieces. Her resilience is however commendable, she is on the verge of a massive emotional breakdown but she refuses to fall. She returns to writing, becomes a regular member of the book clubs in Singapore, makes a few friends and begins everything on a fresh note.

All's well that ends well

All seems to be going fine when one day Divya's chance encounter with her husband tugs at her past she had not been able to fully bury. Ramesh held the hand of his pregnant partner in a way that made Divya's heart wrench in uncomfortable pain. She complained in her mind, "...when I was pregnant with Latika, you never once looked at me like that." Warmth, care and respect never really topped Ramesh's priority list for Divya as much as belittling her for her dark complexion, ranting at her or hating her Indian clothes did.

However, Divya does meet that someone special who understands her the way Ramesh could not. With Wayne, an Australian vet she befriends during one of the book club meetings; Divya sets to walk on the road to romance, a path less travelled with her husband.

Marriage is not a one-sided affair, and nor is it an arrangement customised according to convenience. Ramesh and Divya were not on the same page from the beginning and therefore it had to end. To believe that the Chinese damsel was the only reason that things fell apart would be a limiting perception, for the bricks of the institution always came crumbling down every time Divya tried building them together.

Divya is definitely not a Bonsai Kitten; she learns to grow, battle odds, stand tall and of course regain her belief in love and probably marriage.

Bid adieu to winter wear, until next season

As winters are retreating, people are preparing to pack and store their woollen garments, which once made them look ravishing and gave protection from the chills.

When it comes to taking proper care of these clothes, people are always in a dilemma as to what technique should be employed to make sure that winter wears are ready for seasons to come. Many detergents are available in the market to wash apparels. However, what people are unaware of is that cleaning and preserving woollens, require a specialist's care. Even the most expensive powder detergents contain a substantial amount of soda that cleans tough but in the process damages woollen fibres making them frail and faded. Soda in detergents therefore not only robs your woollens of their colour & style but also of their warmth.

A mild, 'No Soda' and pH-neutral detergent is subtle on all types of fabrics, especially woollens as they require extensive care in cleaning. The liquid is equally potent on other fabrics such as silk, chiffon, rayon and vibrant cottons too, which are more likely to lose lustre and hues after repetitive wash in powder detergents.

Tips for proper cleaning and storage of woollens

It is important to shake woollens before washing them as it removes dirt and dust that get attached to it. Pour the liquid detergent in a bucket or washing machine, soak woollens for five minutes, turn them around a few times and rinse in normal water. Do not wring wet woollens and dry them in shade. Your liquid detergent should be woolmark certified for washing all kinds of wool.

-While packed, a significant harm to woollen fabrics is caused by moths, which feed on to the nutrients of the fibres. Keeping these insects at bay is highly important; thus, it is advisable that rather than using mothballs, natural remedies should be implemented. Herbs, such as cloves, ginseng, lavender, thyme and lemon, are effective in protecting winter wear from these insects

It is also recommended that moisture-absorbing chemicals, such as silica gel and calcium chloride, should be used while storing the woollens. Such chemicals easily consume the dampness of clothes (if there is any left), and prevent them from mildew.

So before storing your woollens, remember to wash them in a specialist liquid detergent like the Godrej Ezee Liquid Detergent and witness the magic of gentle cleaning. Not to forget, the inbuilt conditioner in this liquid detergent will also lend a very lovable fragrance & softness to your woollens. Keep your favourite woollens well-preserved ... for winters to come.

Ways to wear slip-on sneakers

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Maret 2014 | 18.47

Wear black sneakers with white denim and a printed scarf for colour. Animal print slip-ons look great with cuffed jeans and a camelcoloured plain shirt. Tuck your shirt into the jeans to channel an urban vibe.

Embrace the reigning white trend with a short white number, teamed with a pair of jewel-tone sneakers for contrast. Pick a pair of plaid sneakers and hit the street in a turtleneck Tshirt and plain cropped pants.

For a sleek and sexy high-street look, wear a cropped jacket over a nightwear-inspired camisole.

Lace-up pants and denim jacket complement printed sneakers when you want a bohomeets-rock-chic ensemble.

Oversized trousers are trending right now. Wear a pair with your sneakers such that the hem touches the footwear.

Give a sports luxe twist to your streetwear with neon-striped sneakers, a short pleated skirt and a pastel sweatshirt. A 1960s-style full-skirted dress that ends at the knees pair brilliantly with floral print sneakers.

Join the cat walk

A moderately sloppy, kiss-on-the-nose of our city's animal citizens

Dr Jyotsna Changrani of Chimbai village in Bandra is one of those "crazy" cat ladies that every neighbourhood should cherish. The one that feeds strays every day (spending up to Rs 35,000 a month on food alone), medicates them, sterilises them and fights belligerent neighbours for her right to do so.

She combines forces with her neighbourhood MCubed (Maharashtra Mitr Mandal) library to do a "Cat walk" for children around the area. It all started when her elder daughter, Anamika, made a chart about The Cat Carer's Community in her area for school. It should be passed around as a prototype to make corporate PowerPoint presentations more absorbing. In it she details what the volunteers do, why it's important to sterilise animals, includes an X-ray of a cat's broken arm for illustration and concludes that the volunteers get kisses and cuddles which keeps them happy.

When Vibha Kamat of MCubed saw this chart, she invited Jyotsna to introduce children to her animals. A mix of ages and genders enthusiastically joined in and most of them already have animals at home."One 11 or 12-year-old had even helped a cat give birth to kittens," says Jyotsna.

She introduces them to the 60 cats and few dogs in the area, telling them stories about each of them, the importance of sterilising and feeding them, showing them how to tell the male cats from the female and explaining why she wears the same tattered tee, shorts and shoes ensemble every day (so that they can recognise the smell of all the animals she communes with). She ends by showing them the art she and her girls produce.

"Sometimes, the talk veers into uncomfortable life and death territory and I don't know how much truth I should give out," says Jyotsna. "I was showing them a painting I had made of Birbal the at and told them he is now buried by the sea. Some of the children kept asking by why is he not here." They could not make the connection between being dead and being buried, and thus not being present.

Jyotsna, her husband Siddharth and their household major doom Anita feed the animals twice a day,in a loop of 50 minutes each— once between 7 am and 8 am; then again at 5.30 pm. It started when Siddharth lost his childhood companion dog and Jyotsna suggested this as a way of coping with the grief. They are vigilant about providing medical care and sterilising all the new visitors. Besides all the happiness the furry bodies throw at her, she says the routine helps her get compulsory exercise.

So if you see a lady in a tattered green tee with a bag of food, and trailing cats and dogs like a comet, say hello. There might be a lick or purr in it for you.

Power petal: Cooking with flowers

Forget about broccoli, cauliflower and artichokes — yes, they're flowers — and instead, learn how to include the exotic lavender, violet and calendulas into your daily diet

Rose sharbat, marigold oil, lotus stem chips (kamal kadki or bhee kachri) and saffron-tinted sweets may be a mainstay for most. But how about a hibiscus martini or chamomile-spiked sugar?

While you may be no stranger to cooking with Indian flowers — onion, drumstick and banana — foreign imports like zucchini, nasturtiums and calendulas might prove otherwise. Read our edible flower guide to update your blossom vocabulary.

The flower guide

International calendulas or pot marigold
These beautifully bright flowers taste similar to saffron, and are good in pasta and rice dishes. Bright yellow calendulas are an economical alternative to expensive saffron, although not quite as pungent. Rs 2 to Rs 5 per piece

Nasturtium
These yellow and orange petals pack a wonderfully peppery flavour similar to watercress. Their pickled buds can be substituted for expensive capers. Rs 60 per packet

Violets
Sweet and aromatic. Best used in young flower salad, for stuffing in poultry or fish, candied or in sorbets.

Zucchini flowers
Popularly known as squash blossoms, these delicate buds are best picked when slightly open. We love them stuffed with ricotta or fried in a bhajiya-form, just like grandma made. Rs 20 per piece.

Lavender
Sweet and herbal, the buds, which contain essential oils, are used to infuse flavours in macaroons, mousses, biscuits, scones, shortbread and sugar. Rs 500 a kilo.

Indian onion flower
This pungent weedesque flower is used to make pakodas, Sindhi curry and dosas. Try something nouveau. Journalist Lalitha Iyer made a salad for her "try one new thing a day" food project by mixingchopped onion flowers with baby potatoes, radish and a mustard lemon dressing.

Roses
Sweet and fragrant. As a gulk and consuming nation, we are no strangers to rose petals (and water) used to make syrups, jellies, teas and even macaroons.

Pumpkin flower
The bright yellow flower tastes mildly of raw squash. The Chinese fry it. We use it in sabzis like Tamil poriyal (palya in Kannada and porutu in Telugu), made with urad dal, beans and cabbage.

Drumstick flowers
They are small, white and taste like mushrooms when cooked. It is used to make veg dishes, chutneys and dosa batter. Adai (a savoury pancake made with brown rice and drumstick leaves), anyone?

Banana flowers
Or kele ke phool are purple blossoms that are eaten raw, in South Indian usli (a chana dal and grated coconut vegetable), adai, and sometimes stuffed like koftas.

10 Frilly flower DIY ideas

Lavender olive oil
For some drama-in-bottle, start by adding a fistful of dried lavender flowers and slightly bruised mint leaves in an old jam jar. Add good grade olive oil to it and let it infuse for a week. After which, strain and transfer to a bottle. For a final flourish, add one fresh lavender stalk. This wondrous oil can be used as a post-bath body oil, to dress salads or eaten plain with bread and balsamic vinegar.

Marigold vinegar
Take two cups of pressed (dried in sun for five hours) pot marigold petals, add one teaspoon sea salt and sugar each, and finish by adding white wine vinegar. Seal and let it steep for a fortnight, in the shade. Once done — it usually stays for six months — use liberally in salads and dressings (think marigold vinaigrette) for an instant kick of sunkissed flavours.

Nasturtium salad
Sprinkle this jewel-bright bright edible flower in your micro greens salad for a splash of colour-cum-taste. But if you want to keep things simple; use large quantities of iceberg or butterhead lettuce and a small portion of red radicchio, for bitter balance. Dress this veritable garden with a basic lemon dressing.

Cheese bruschetta with edible blooms
Need to beat the winter blues? Handmix half a container of plain cream cheese with chopped chives and spread generously on grilled bread. Garnish with mixed dried flowers and cracked pepper, for a flowery bruschetta breaky. Perfect with a cup of green tea.

Flower pesto
This one is best tried with only one of two flowers: nasturtium or zucchini blossoms (a.k.a. squash). If you've perfected a pesto recipe, stick to it and only replace half the basil with one of the above. If you're clueless, roast a handful of nuts in a pan. Let them cool and blitz with basil and nasturtium/ zucchini, cheese, salt and pepper. Add olive oil as you blitz. Use to sauce your pasta or as a dip.

Rose iced tea
Up until a decade ago, Rooh Afza was a part of everyone's summer dictionary. After which, powdered lemon and peach iced teas flooded the market. We say, revive the flavour by adding the above rubyred syrup or rose water to cooled tea, brewed with a few cardamom pods. Pour into a tall glass, dotted with ice, mint and swizzle stick.

Lavender-spiked sparkling wine/hibiscus martini
Who says you can't have your flower and drink it too? Our two favourite floral alcoholic cocktails include lavender-spiked sparkling wine (it's best to avoid Champagne) and hibiscus (vodka) martini. In the former, use dried purple petals and in the latter, hibiscus extract or syrup... Slurp up.

Flower-flavoured honey
A couple of years ago, single varietal flower honey was moving off racks faster than you could say, bee. And while there are numerous brands currently available, we suggest you DIY at home by getting your hands on one pot of golden goodness. Next, either steep your favourite flavour of flower or just a spoonful of orange blossom water and that's that.

Crystallised flowers
One of the most popular uses of edible flowers is in candied or crystallised flowers, used to decorate cakes and fine candies. Think flower cupcakes and chamomile-spiked sugar jars. Don't know how? Stir together one egg white and one teaspoon of water. Gently brush the above mixture onto the petals (violas or rose), coating both sides. Use a bowl to toss the petals with sugar and transfer to a cooling rack, allow the petals to rest overnight.

Floral ice & Popsicles
Freeze whole small flowers into ice rings or cubes for a pretty addition to punches and other beverages. Throwing a kiddie party and aren't a fan of OTT sweets? Whip up a batch of flower lollies that look almost as good as they taste. Just because it's dessert, it doesn't need to give you cavities. You are better off using mixed dried flowers and cordials like elder flower.

Farhan Akhtar: n In Bollywood, Farhan Akhtar rocked a blue tuxedo perfectly and with confidence, with a camouflage jacket.

The classic white tux
The white tuxedo, originally a classic, makes a comeback.
Matthew Mcconaughey: The Dallas Buyers Club star wore an ivory one-button peak lapel tuxedo jacket with a black waistcoat and pants.
Jared Leto: The Oscar winner wore a white tuxedo jacket with black pants and added a touch of colour with a burgundy bowtie.

Identifying a tux
Traditionally a tuxedo is black in colour, single-button garment. It has lapels that are made of grosgrain satin or matte satin. The lapels could be in peak, notch or shawl shapes. Originally in the single-buttoned jacket, the buttons are made of cloth, both at the sleeves and on the body.

Over the years, the tuxedo has undergone a quiet revolution but the essence remains intact i.e. satin on the lapels and cloth buttons. If you want to distinguish a tuxedo jacket from a normal one, then look out for the lapels and the buttons. A tuxedo jacket would have satin lapels and cloth buttons. The modern tuxedo is black or white in colour, although designers have also started using shades of greys and midnight blues. It also has more than one button and is even double-breasted.

How often should you eat?

Three meals a day or eight? TOI speaks to experts who seem to have contrary opinions.

In our race to be the biggest loser, most of us go after different diets. The trusted and age-old three-meals-a-day concept works for some, while others swear by the new-age eight-meals-a-day. Most of us have been brought up on the notion that having untimely in-between meal snacks, is one of the major causes of weight gain. Of late, however, a number of trainers, nutritionists and dieticians have come up with the 'six-to-eight-meals-a-day' plan. And many Bollywood actors and actresses claim that following such diets have made them the biggest losers. They believe that in-between snacks help them stay slim and this regular intake also boosts metabolism. However, there are health gurus and trainers who believe that eating too many meals may just work against you and increase your weight. Read on to find out what the experts have to say...

Eat six to eight meals a day

Eat to burn! This can be one of the easiest and most reliable ways to ensure fat loss. Digestion itself is a calorie-burning activity. For every calorie you ingest, your body uses some to burn what you are eating. The question is, how do you make this wonderful feature of your body work for you? This is the essential principle behind the practice of frequent eating where eating at shorter intervals (six to eight meals a day or more!) enables your body to use more calories to aid digestion. When you constantly provide fuel to your body, it means you are also tickling your body to work. Keep working, keep burning. This is called the thermogenic effect of food and it is not only an incredibly smart way of losing weight, it also helps you increase your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).

I like to call this the Internal Workout — because by continually making it work for digestion, you're giving your body a workout. And while you may not be able to see the furious digestive activity going on in your body at any point in time, trust me, your body is working way harder than if you eat at longer intervals (three-to-four meals a day).

- says Pooja Makhija, Consulting Nutritionist and Clinical Dietitian

More meals means less stored fat

Eating six to eight meals a day rather than three, is better because it boosts metabolism, controls blood sugar levels and helps in weight management.

Consuming three meals increases the likelihood that one will start an exercise regime with a low blood sugar level. For instance, if we eat lunch around noon, generally our second meal of the day, we would not have much energy for an optimal, calorie-burning workout in the evening.

On the other hand, if we follow a six-meal-a-day plan and have a small meal around noon and another meal around 3 pm, our blood sugar level would be more stable, providing us with more energy for our workout. Cortisol, a hormone, breaks down body fat. However, if we eat a large, high-calorie meal, cortisol is produced in large quantities, but transports the fat from under the skin to deep within the abdominal cavity. This increases the risk of chronic diseases including abdominal obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Incorporating a six-meal-a-day plan into one's routine decreases the magnitude of cortisol production.

Eating within 30 minutes of every exercise session enables our muscles to maximally replenish the glucose we used during the workout. Consuming another meal two hours after the post-workout meal further enhances post-exercise recovery and replenishment.

Eating every three-to-four hours can ward off hunger and prevent binges that lead to weight gain. It also maintains metabolism and can help regulate proper digestion to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort.

When people consume the same number of calories in one single daily meal rather than three, they show significant increase in blood pressure, total cholesterol levels and levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol.

Eight meals increase our energy levels, accelerate muscle growth, and speed up our metabolism without storing fat. In fact, frequent eating will actually allow us to eat up to 50 per cent more calories without storing an ounce of it as fat.
- says Dr Shikha Sharma, MBBS Doctor and Wellness Expert

Follow your hunger, don't eat mechanically

It is very important to understand the circadian rhythm of the body. As per our ancient science, Ayurveda, it is all about appropriate time for appropriate food in appropriate quantity.

It is also important to understand that the body needs time to utilise the fuels released from our food. Our body has its own natural rhythm which is as follows:

- 12 pm to 8 pm is the ideal period for human digestive capability. So, most nutrients must be consumed at this time.
- 8 pm to 4 am is assimilation time, where the body begins to slow down.
- 4 am to 12 pm is elimination time/detox time, if you are following a proper and disciplined lifestyle.

The body's digestive process slows down after sunset as the energy on that side of the earth is ebbing. So, all the food eaten post sunset becomes difficult to digest. The later you eat, you must make sure to choose your food sensibly.

The thumb rule of eating small meals six to seven times a day, which occidental science suggests is rooted only in the shallow system of addressing the BMR / calorie counting.

Even the book Fit For Life by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond suggests the vedic principles of food discipline.

Always remember, to never eat by the rule of the thumb. Go by the bio-feedback and follow your hunger needs. Hunger is the need of the body, and appetite for more meals, is the greed of the body. Eating mechanically should never be the case. Eat with awareness as you are not only consuming cosmic energy but cosmic intelligence too.

- says Mickey Mehta, Holistic Health Guru

Our body was always accustomed to being fed at regular intervals

There is this common perception that I have come up with this radical idea of multiple meals a day. But most of us, apart from the three main meals, have always eaten in between, just that we never thought of those as "meals", a terminology of the new age nutrition. By default, the body was and is accustomed to being fed at regular intervals as evident in newborn babies who need to be fed constantly. At the basic physiological level, this ensures a steady level of blood sugar in our body and sends a signal that 'all is well' and it can continue with its regular processes. On the other hand, not eating for long hours sends the body into a state of panic and it reacts by converting food into fat for any eventuality (read — scarcity of food).

The act of eating often during the day can only happen when communication is established with the stomach, the biggest diet guru on earth. This process is facilitated by the four principles of eating right.

Eating as soon as we are awake kickstarts our metabolic rate and signals our bodies that our nightly fast is broken. Tea, coffee, or any other stimulant, does the exact opposite by suppressing the signals of hunger.

Eating at regular intervals post this reassures our bodies that nourishment is readily available and that it no longer has to convert every meal into future fuel i.e. fat.

Eating more when we are more active and less when less active will happen naturally once we are in tune with our appetite. Everybody is unique so we can't standardise the number of meals a day. For most of us there is the call of hunger every two-three hours. It is up to us whether we want to listen to it or ignore it.

Of course, as all good things come to an end, eating the last meal of the day a few hours prior to bedtime allows our body to digest and assimilate all the nutrients it needs before focusing on its essential function of recovery during our sleep. If the last meal is too heavy or eaten too close to bedtime, the body will be unable to carry out its recovery and thus will leave us feeling uncomfortable the next day.
- says Rujuta Diwekar Celebrity nutritionist and author

'Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism' is utter nonsense

London-based personal trainer Venice A Fulton negates the notion of six-to-eight meals a day and says that one should only eat three good meals a day and no in-between snacks. In his book Six weeks to OMG: Get Skinnier Than All Your Friends. Venice (real name Paul Khanna), claims he can help you lose upto around 10 kgs in six weeks. Venice states that the belief — "each time we eat we boost our metabolism and our chances of losing weight' — is wrong and just wishful thinking". He adds that our snacks have become meals and we eat more than we realise during the in-between-meal times. There is no point in eating six or more times a day because just sticking to three meals also controls our appetite as it releases leptin (a chemical that tells our brain we are full). Venice says in an interview on a video-sharing website, "The belief 'breakfast kickstarts you metabolism' is utter nonsense", and goes on to state that metabolism begins the moment you wake up. A cold bath or shower in the morning helps burn calories too.
- says Venice A Fulton, Personal Trainer and author

Why no more than three meals

- You will end up in the toilet more often.

- You will be fatter because your in-between snacks may be much bigger.

- All that food will make you visit your dentist more often!

Care for your expensive rug

Written By Unknown on Senin, 24 Maret 2014 | 18.48

Expensive rugs can enhance the beauty of a room.

They look especially good on hardwood floors, but they can also be used in rooms with wall-to-wall carpet. Here is how to take care of them.

If you intend to someday pass your beautiful oriental rugs on to your kids, it means that the rugs need to be well cared for. Here's how to go about it.

Frequently clean your rug
Cleaning your area rug or oriental rug frequently by going over it with a good vacuum cleaner is imperative. The best method for vacuuming your rugs is to vacuum with the beater bar turned off. Shaking oriental rugs or area rugs too hard can damage fibers, so a gentle vacuum cleaning is best.

Deal with spills immediately
In order to eliminate staining, spills need to be dealt with right away. If something is spilled on your oriental or area rug, quickly blot the rug with a dry absorbent fabric soaked in resilient solution. Next gently wipe until the area is dry. Make sure that the stain solution you use is safe for your type of oriental or area rug.

Rotate area rugs for even wearing
It is important to rotate your oriental or area rugs each year in order to ensure that the rugs wear evenly. Sun can cause fading and nothing looks worse than an area rug that is faded on one side but not the other. Make rotating your area rugs a part of your spring cleaning routine.

Use a carpet pad underneath area rugs
A simple way to extend the life of your area rug or oriental rug is to use an underlay pad underneath the rug. This will help minimize wear by providing a cushion between the rug and the floor.

Area rugs and oriental rugs are beautiful ways to accent your home. Taking good care of your rugs can extend the life and ensure that you will be able to enjoy their beauty for years to come.

How to choose the right lingerie

Be clear on "the purpose" of the lingerie ensemble. If it's something you want to be able to wear under tight-fitting clothes, opt for seamless lines with proper support.

If it's seduction you're after, go for all the bells and whistles, like ribbon ties, lace and frills.
When trying on lingerie, pointedly focus your eye on the parts of your body that you love. Ignore all the rest.
When choosing a color, make sure you can live up to the impression you are creating. Seductions have a personality, be it femme fatale, romance or virgin bride. Choose your lingerie accordingly.
Sometimes you want lingerie that simply makes your clothing look better. The one mistake seen with women is not pulling the bra straps tight enough, thereby creating a sagging effect. One should yank those straps as tight as possible. If the band and cup sizes are right, then the bra will not inch up sagging.
We all know when a pair of shoes are past their prime, yet we seem to accept the wearing of lingerie that no longer shapes and supports us. Anything over a year old that has been worn frequently and for long periods of the day as past its shelf life should be replaced quickly.
One should discipline themselves to wear a nice and comfy nightwear before going to bed rather than a discarded t-shirt and some sports payjama. That profound shift in what one wear to sleep changes the point of view on what to wear beneath her clothes.

7 things to avoid when drunk

Drinking may be fun, but ensure that you don't have to bear the consequences

Drunk driving

This one is extremely serious. Not only are you risking your own life, but also that of others in the car and those who are out on the road or in other vehicles. Make sure that you either take a cab back home or have a sober friend, who can take over the task. It's not macho to drive when you are drunk.

Click pictures and upload them online

You do lose inhibitions when you are drunk, but if your drunken revelry finds its way online, it may cause a lot of trouble. Pictures that are loaded online can never be completely wiped off. You wouldn't want your boss to see your party pictures, right?

Get flirty with a stranger

Beauty does lie in the eye of the beerholder, but the illusion is bound to wear off once the beer haze passes away. You may end up regretting your actions the morning after your drunken revelry and do, what is known as, the 'walk of shame'.

Talk to your ex

Most people get highly emotional after a few drinks and dialling your ex will seem to be the perfect solution. Resist that temptation. It never helps to keep blabbering when you are high. In fact, you may end up squashing all chances of resurrecting your relationship with your drunken talk.

Respond to anything that's work-related

Well, you really don't want to mix business with pleasure. Sometimes, it is necessary to use certain language while writing an official mail and you may just type things that you don't mean to. Ensure that your drunken state doesn't affect your career.

Drunk texting

Whether it's your friend or someone you are interested in, don't start a conversation with someone when you are drunk. You never know when your rather 'high' spirits may lead you into some big trouble.

Have a fight

When drunk, you may think that anyone who disagrees with you is committing a crime. But that is not the time to go about serving justice. Make sure that spats stay verbal and don't reach the physical level. You may not just end up with a black eye, but also a broken bone or two.

Healing with animal-assisted therapy

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 23 Maret 2014 | 18.47

With a Canadian university using puppies as stress-busters for students, we see more animals helping people with different ailments

City-based nine-year-old kid, Anjali, a girl with special needs, was usually a calm child. She had suffered mentally because when she was young, she saw her father commit suicide in front of her eyes and was seeking therapy for the trauma. However, one day, in the middle of therapy, she just stopped talking. She turned aggressive, started hitting her classmates and her overall behaviour became abusive. Therapist Radhika Nair who was treating her, says, "Anjali would not talk to anyone. It was strange because we were already treating her for the trauma she suffered seeing her father pass away, but instead of recovering, she became quiet. In the course of her therapy, it was revealed that Anjali's maternal uncle was molesting her at the time." This she didn't reveal to a therapist, but to a therapy dog who was working with her, adds Nair. "The child wanted to express her emotions, but couldn't do it to another human being as she had lost trust in humans, but she confided to the dog." This revelation not only helped treat Anjali, but also put a stop to a serious form of abuse. It brought a new form of therapy to light.

Animals as therapists
This is a case where animal-assisted therapy (AAT) comes into play. AAT is a form of treatment where animals are used to motivate the patient and act as mediators when the patient doesn't respond to normal therapy. AAT has a surprising success rate since people, mostly kids, respond amazingly to pets. "When we walk in with dogs, the client looks at us in a positive way. Then we are not therapists or doctors, but fun people coming with a dog," adds Nair.

Treating autism
While pets are used to treat post traumatic stress disorder to heal people who have been through lifealtering incidents like terrorist attacks, bomb blasts and even soldiers back from war zones, they work best with kids who are autistic. "We found our most positive results with children who have autism. Since it hinders a kid's ability to interact with people and they live in a world of their own, a dog is someone who is non-judgemental and kids open up to them more easily. Another example Nair cites is of a kid with severe autism who avoided eye contact with people, including her parents, "This child didn't respond to her name, she avoided eye contact and remained very aloof. After a couple of tough sessions she opened up, and the very next day, after a fruitful session where she was playing with the therapy dog, she actually held the hand of a child in class," she says.

Dogs are common, but cats can be of help too
The most common therapy animals are dogs (they even use a Golden Retriever, a Beagle and pug), although cats too are used. Says animal therapist Rohini Fernandes, "We use cats with adults. They go and curl up in their laps, which helps them relieve stress as they pet the cat which is quite soothing and reveal things to us which they otherwise wouldn't." While with kids, it is dogs who work best, as kids often want to run around and play, mid-therapy. "The dogs that are used to treat kids are trained. We select extremely well-behaved dogs with a good temper," says Fernandez who trains dogs to not react even if the child hurts it.

Labradors are friendliest
While most dog breeds work well with animal-assisted therapy, the breed most preferred is a Labrador. "By nature labs are super- friendly and active. Also, their fur is short, so there is no way the kid could pull the animal's hair and hurt the dog."

How to pick a good pair of sunglasses

Protecting your eyes from the sun begins with picking the right pair of sunglasses.

UAV/UVB protection: Look for labels that say the lenses block 99% or 100% of UVB and UVA rays.

Fit matters: Poorly fitted sunglasses do not provide enough protection. Never choose a pair that fits so close that your eyelashes are hitting the lenses. Rather, choose a pair that fits close to your face around the brow area.
