Is your pet suffering from anger issues?

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 08 November 2014 | 18.47

Not just Mumbaikars, even their pets are suffering from anger and depression. What is it that we are doing wrong?

In May 2011 when Colaba resident Rajashree Khalap lost her ten-year-old dog, Lalee, she and her husband weren't the only ones in the family who were heartbroken. "My other pet, then three-year-old mixed-breed Kimaya, who was very attached to Lalee, was distraught," says the 50-year-old wildlife conservationist.

Lalee, says Khalap, had a severe allergic reaction to some cement, which was lying at home and passed away in the car while being taken to the vet. "Kimaya hadn't seen what happened to her. She just saw us rushing out with Lalee and then returning without her. In hindsight, I feel we should have brought the body home and allowed Kimaya to understand and come to terms with what had happened," she adds.

Even as Khalap and her husband grieved, Kimaya too stopped eating. Normally, "a greedy little dog", she'd curl up and sleep most of the time, showing little interest in food. Examinations by vets threw up no medical conditions, which is when Khalap took her to Dadar-based canine behaviourist and trainer Shirin Merchant who told her that while Kimaya was depressed, she was also picking up on Khalap's mood which made it worse for her. Merchant warned Khalap, "If you don't change your behaviour, you will lose your second dog, too."

MIRRORING THE MASTER

"Most people," says Merchant, "attribute human qualities to their pets. Finding a pet 'depressed' could merely be our point of view of the situation." All animal behaviour is rooted in survival and most animals find a way to recover from a loss or a change in locale.

"What does affect pets more is the mood of the humans they are attached to, and any change in routine," she says. So, as soon as there's some stability in the pet's life, the signs of depression will start disappearing.

DEALING WITH TRAUMA

While a pet may reflect changes in the owner's behaviour, depression could also be the result of abuse or other kinds of trauma. Churchgateresident Aadore Sayani recalls a stray dog at Oval Maidan who had disappeared for a few weeks and was later found at Vashi. "He showed signs of injury so we took him to the vet who, on investigation, said that it looked like he'd been sexually abused. Once playful and friendly, he was just not interested in people around him anymore," says Sayani. Getting the dog back to his natural state, she adds, took a few months and spending plenty of time with him.

Often even taking dogs out of their natural environment or roles can cause stress. Labradors, for instance, are retrievers who were bred to use their noses and scent things out. Siberian Huskies are not just meant for a colder climate but also spend hours pulling sledges. Being cooped up in Mumbai apartments, with two half-hour walks a day is a far cry from the free environment they were meant to live in. "Giving them something to do can improve their mood," says Merchant, who suggests taking the dog to a park where he can run freely.

Khalap, who on Merchant's advice brought in a trainer to work with Kimaya attests to the change that regular activity brought to her dog's moods. "She loved her training sessions, which were reward-based and she got lavish praise, petting and delicious treats for everything she did," says Khalap, adding that her pet who'd earlier be timid around other dogs managed to walk near other dogs without panicking after a few lessons around Oval Maidan. "As for her meals, from the day of her first lesson she regained her normal appetite. And keeping busy with Kimaya cheered me up, too," says Khalap.

CURLING UP

As in humans, one of the top signs of depression in animals is avoiding contact, says a south Mumbai homeopath, who also treats animals for depression. "You'll find your dog curled up in a corner or, if they are strays they will hide under a car," she says, adding that cats will get into cupboards and slink into a corner there.

Not eating, she says, is usually a sign of illness — kidney problem or a stomach bug. If it persists over a couple of days and all other tests are normal is when the pet is diagnosed with depression, she adds. However, it's not just dogs and cats who are sensitive to loneliness. "I've seen parrots and cockatoos pull out their feathers in anger and depression when left in isolation for long periods," she says. Placing a mirror in the cage, or rattles — things that will make a sound — help them get better, she adds.

GETTING TREATMENT

When all other signs of illness have been set aside, should mood elevators be given to the pets. Merchant says that while allopathic medicine for depression are available in the West, what's available in India is a generic medicine for mental health. And even this is advised in rare cases and only by prescription. Dr S V Vishwasrao, Bandrabased veterinary surgeon, cautions, "Treatment would be incomplete and ineffective without the love and personal care of the pet parent.

Figuring out what triggers depression is the key to solving this problem. Medication may be required in some cases. But it is important to rule out other contributing systemic diseases and central nervous system disorders that can cause similar symptoms."

Why laughing at yourself is cool

When Alia Bhatt made the biggest faux pas on a chat show by calling Prithviraj Chavan the President of India, the entire world pointed fingers at her and made her the butt of all jokes -` Alia Bhatt is so dumb that she thinks Dino Morea is son of Ganapati Bappa Morea' and other mean jibes were thrown at her across the Internet.

But after lying low for a while, she came up with a hilarious, I-laugh-at-myself video, in which she's shown increasing her `brain size' and consequently , her GK. This video turned the table on them, and now, she's the darling of a lot of people! And the latest to join this poke-fun-at-yourself bandwagon is Siddharth Mallya, who attempts to answer questions that people send him on social media.

By doing so, apart from humanising themselves, these celebrities have shown that not taking yourself too seriously is the new cool thing! Here are four reasons why we think laughing at yourself is awesome.

YOU BECOME ENDEARING

Every one has flaws, but the line that separates you from the uncle, who never smiles, is the way you take a joke. People love making fun of others. But when you laugh with them, at yourself, you'll come across as an easy-going, lovable person. "It's better to make peace with your shortcomings and enjoy it. Take Alia Bhatt's case. Everybody thought she was daft, but when she came up with the video, she became this cool thing who knows how to take a joke," shares Anjali Parvati Koda, a stand-up comedian. Now, she's suddenly become the darling of people and the joke is on those who cracked jokes at her earlier!

YOU COME ACROSS AS SUPERCOOL

Apart from coming across as a fun person, taking a joke in the right spirit also shows that you're confident about yourself. "When you can laugh at yourself, it means you are aware of your shortcomings. You come across as somebody who is confident and secure," says writer Avinash Agarwal.

YOU HAVE THE LAST LAUGH

People assume that physical appearances are a great subject to make fun of -even Russell Peters does it! But instead of sulking when people poke fun at your balding head or weight, laugh at your own shortcomings! When you do poke fun at yourself, others don't have anything to do or say . Rajasekhar Mamidanna, a computer science-engineer-cum-standup comedian who doesn't mind being bald, says, "I know people will make fun of my baldness, so whenever I go on stage, I joke about it so that it doesn't give anyone else a chance to do so. Isn't is better to make fun of oneself rather than have others do it? You have the last laugh!" It also shows that you're not a douchebag who thinks the world of himself. "We tend to take ourselves too seriously . But the fact is that nobody has the time to think about us. Though making fun of oneself is not everyone's cup of tea, those who can do so are considered edgy . When I do shows and poke fun at some blooper I make, I get the maximum applause," shares Anjali

YOU BECOME A BETTER PERSON

It sounds preachy , but it's true! You're so immersed at looking at your own shortcomings and trying to figure out a way to make fun of yourself that you don't let others feel bad. You'll be that cool guy who makes everyone feel comfortable by baring your shortcomings and who keeps everyone happy . So laugh away!

9 food combos to make you lean

Nine food combinations that will make staying healthy and looking fit easier

Combination: Eggs and Mango
Gives you: Firm skin
There's no need to apply several products to get good, firm skin. Just eat some eggs and mango, especially now that the fruit is in season. Eggs are naturally rich in amino acids that are essential for formation of skin-plumping collagen. And mango, which is rich in Vitamin C, works with these acids to boost collagen production. This helps build back lost stores in the body, which can significantly improve the appearance of skin.

Do it right: To give a boost to your next breakfast, pair an omelette with a cup of fresh mango chunks, which supply nearly an entire day's supply of Vitamin C.

Combination: Red Bell Peppers and Black Beans
Gives you: Better Immunity
They look good at the veggie market and are expensive. But here's a good reason to buy them. You'll absorb more immune-boosting plant iron by adding in some red bell peppers on your plate. Iron in black beans is hard for the body to absorb, however, adding a dose of Vitamin C-rich produce like red peppers converts the iron into a type that's easier for the body to use.

Do it right: There are great recipes online that show you how to mix your beans with red bell peppers and make the meal a tasty one too.

Combination: Extra-Virgin Olive Oil and Tomatoes
Gives you: Better protection from diseases
Tomatoes boast of four major carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene) besides three potent antioxidants (betacarotene, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C) which may help fight cancer and heart disease. These protective chemicals are better absorbed with extra-virgin olive oil, which is high in healthy monounsaturated fats.

Do it right: Leave the tomato skin on, since it is packed with phytochemicals. Extra-virgin olive oil is the least processed form, so it contains the most beneficial compounds. Store it away from heat and light to prevent it from going rancid.

Combination: Broccoli and Tomatoes
Gives you: Protection against cancer
Both are individually known to have cancer-fighting properties, but research has shown that together they are the Hulk of cancerfighting foods. Scientists found consuming tomato and broccoli at the same time was more effective at slowing the growth of cancerous prostate tumours than eating either vegetable alone.
Do it right: Have one-and-a-half cups of broccoli along with twoand-a-half cups of fresh tomato, with pizza or spaghetti.

Combination: Oatmeal and Strawberries
Gives you: A healthier heart
Oats contain two important phytochemicals called avenanthramides and phenolic acids, which are known to work with Vitamin C to reduce harmful effects of bad cholesterol and help prevent plaque build-up that lead to heart attacks.
Do it right: Enjoy a half cup of sliced strawberries with your morning bowl of oatmeal.

Combination: Green Tea and Lemon
Gives you: A healthier heart

Green tea, a rich source of powerful antioxidants called catechins, is known to help improve the heart's health. However, according to studies only about 20 per cent of these compounds are absorbed by the human body. Adding lemon juice to green tea has been shown to increase the catechins level to 80 per cent.

Do it right: After brewing yourself a cup of green tea, squeeze in the juice of one whole lemon.

Combination: Cinnamon and Whole Grain Toast
Gives you: Extra energy and quicker weight loss
Sprinkling cinnamon on your toast may help keep your blood sugar at a healthier level, which prevents dips in your energy and spikes in your hunger level. In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cinnamon was found to slow the rate of stomach emptying after meals and reduce the rise in blood sugar after meals to negate more bingeing later.

Do it right: Use whole grain bread, trans-free margarine and a teaspoon of cinnamon.

Combination: Garlic and Onions
Gives you: Full-body protection
Both these veggies contain a number of organosulfur compounds and heart-healthy plant chemicals that help keep arteries free of plaque. Some of these compounds have even been studied for their power to detoxify carcinogens in the body.

Do it right: Most Indian cooking combines the two, however if you are in the mood for something else, the combination even works for soups and sauces.

Combination: Green Tea and Black Pepper
Gives you: A slimmer waistline
Forget crash dieting. After your next meal sip a cup of green tea with a little black pepper thrown in. The combination boosts the absorption of EGCG, a key antioxidant in tea tied to calorie burning, by 130 per cent. Experts say the compounds in green tea can affect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness.

Do it right: Studies say as little as a half-teaspoon of black pepper can increase the absorption of tea's beneficial compounds.

What makes men in uniform so desirable?

There is indeed something appealing about Hrithik Roshan's makeover from a clueless teenager to a disciplined army officer in the movie Lakshya; in the way he pulled off the army garb rather handsomely over his perfectly sculpted body. So what if R Madhavan is a little distanced from the perfect physique? His cameo in Rang De Basanti as a dashing Air Force officer triggered his desirability quotient that made girls go weak in the knees.

What is it about men in uniform that draws female attention in plenty? Some say it is the attire itself that accentuates their overall personality. Reasons may vary, but it is to an extent true that a man from the Army, Air force, Navy et al, is looked upon as the ideal beau. Saachi Saxena, stewardess with a leading airline says, "Pilots have the responsibility of flying an aircraft that has almost 300 passengers on board. Naturally, their sense of responsibility cannot be judged. And every girl wants a responsible and focussed partner. Add to that the elan with which they carry themselves. Many might feel shy accepting the fact that they are quite sought after in the airline industry."

Men in service have all the reasons to be coveted. Their profession is such that they cannot help but exude chivalry in their mannerisms, which is enough to impress women. The act of being courteous is perceived to be more respectful than intended to impress. Opening the door for the lady to enter first, holding the chair and allowing her to sit, practicing basic table manners while eating together are just some of the practices that come naturally to them. Of course, everything comes with a condition. Barnali Mishra, a PR professional who's dating an Army officer, points out that communication can be a challenge. "There are times when I need to discuss something urgently and his phone remains unreachable because he's traversing no-network areas," she says. That's when the sweet old tradition of writing letters is revived in the modern day context. "Men in the army and such professions find it a little difficult to voice their feelings as anyone else normally would, but they are able to express beautifully in words. Our exchange of thoughts via emails is the part I enjoy most," she adds.

A penchant for men in uniform also takes root if you have someone like that in the family. Trisha Seth, a copywriter, explains, "My father was in the Air Force and I grew up idolising him, his never-say-no attitude, being always up for adventure and helpful nature. He has been very accommodating under certain circumstances; his disciplined and organised nature amazes me. The disappointment happens when I search these traits in other men."

Digressing from the above perceptions, Dr. Geetanjali Sharma, marriage and relationship counsellor, brings to light the dilemmas faced by women who settle for such partners. "Infidelity is the most common crisis faced on either side. Also, since they're away from home for prolonged periods, re-connecting with the family at the same emotional level suffers a setback." Then why do women continue to be in awe of them? "Women prefer a partner who can protect them. It has been so since ancient times. So, it can be assumed that men in uniform are the modern day 'saviours' and hence the attraction," she concludes.

In pics: 10 mistakes men make in bed

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 07 November 2014 | 18.48

01

When it comes to what women want in bed, men tend to make serious avoidable mistakes like these.

Silent play: No matter the circumstances, most men tend to be eerily silent during the entire act. You may think that's fine, but this makes your woman feel alienated. It makes her wonder if she's actually pleasuring you. There's no need to exaggerate your feelings, but you can let your partner know you're enjoying her company in a genuine way. The occasional moans and groans are not such a bad thing. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

02

Foreplay is not a means to an end: Most men tend to breeze through it — the effortless kissing here and caressing there, as they undress. But in too much anticipation of a great act, you may appear desperate to begin. And that won't score you any brownie points in the long run. Take it slowly. Enjoy every aspect of the encounter as you get to know the woman you are with. Women enjoy a well-paced build-up — the making-out, the undressing, the reciprocal oral sex. This will also lead to a more fulfilling encounter. And perhaps, a standing invitation for more. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

03

Forget the big O: Besides, when you approach sex with a clear focus on only reaching an orgasm, you may lose sight of the path to the climactic moment. Don't pressure yourself, or your partner, to hit the finish line as quickly as possible. Rather than rush it, why not enjoy the experience as a whole. You'll prolong your pleasure, and your partner will feel like she's with a guy who actually knows what he's doing. The conclusion, though delayed, will be a lot more satisfying for both. 04

Avoid the licking: Performing oral sex on a woman means quick licks at the labia majora, followed by brief, orgasm-inducing penetration with your tongue. However, while that may seem enticing, the labial tonguelashing is not a technique that docs recommend. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

05

The fingers carefully: Although digital penetration is considered a normal part of foreplay, some guys get overeager and, confuse their fingers for penises. As a result, they finger their partners with a vigour reserved for sex. This also reflects that they have no clue what a woman wants, which is why they have resolved to go hard and fast. Instead, you should aim for a more measured approach; make her get used to the feel of your fingers as you gradually insert more of them. There's room for intensity, but a little nuance will surely take you a long way. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

06

Sensitise to her wants: If you think that simply pounding away at a woman during sex is a major turn-on, you are wrong. Yet, many men convinced that it will ultimately bring their partners to orgasm. But women are sensitive souls. They appreciate nuance, feeling and deep emotion. So, rather than thrusting away from beginning to end, you'll want to vary your speed throughout sex. Gauge your partner's response, take it as a lead and simply go with the flow. If she asks you to go harder, oblige. But if the moment calls for it, go slowly. The key is to sensitise yourself to what she wants, and not what you want. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

/life-style/photo-stories/relationships/10-mistakes-men-make-in-bed/eventshow/37575058.cms

07

Go easy with the clitoris: Women enjoy the clitoral stimulation than any sort of penetration. So never ignore her clitoris. Yet, at the same time, don't treat it like a scratch card and rub relentlessly in order to make your partner climax. Remember, the clitoris is extremely sensitive, so too much force can actually prove painful. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

10 mistakes men make in bed

/life-style/photo-stories/relationships/10-mistakes-men-make-in-bed/eventshow/37575100.cms

08

Keep her entire body in mind: When you have sex, you aim to pleasure the woman you are with. So it makes sense that many guys focus on the one or two sensitive areas of her body like the neck or thighs. However, the next step is not to look for other ways to please her. Though this notion is understandable, it is also incredibly short-sighted. The law of diminishing returns applies everywhere — even in the bedroom. If you've worked her neck for a while, move down to her breasts. And you may not want to focus heavily on her clitoris. Overstimulation can sometimes prove unpleasant. So keep things varied. As the age-old adage goes, variety is the spice of life. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

10 mistakes men make in bed

/life-style/photo-stories/relationships/10-mistakes-men-make-in-bed/eventshow/37575162.cms

09

Rough now, but be sweet later: There's nothing wrong with a little roughness if it's consensual. But you should never take it too far (no one wants to leave the bedroom in need of medical attention) and you should always remember to show some compassion afterward. When it's all over, make sure you pay attention to her immediate needs, which will likely mean some snuggling and cuddling. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

10

Don't stress about the G-Spot: The location of the G-Spot (Grafenberg Spot), has long eluded men. It is widely understood to be a couple of inches up the anterior vaginal wall, between the vaginal opening and the urethra. Your search will probably be less scientific, once you've inserted your fingers into her vagina, curl them as though you were asking someone to come toward you; the spot you're looking for will feel rippled. But don't let that elusive area become the be-all, end-all of your sex life. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

5 rivalry issues among twins

A sibling can be fun, right from having someone to play with to that one person who is always all ears to your issues.

However, there's more to this than just fun, siblings face a lot of compatibility issues that multiplies with twins. Here's a peak into five issues that twins face as a part of growing up as well as later in life.

Identity crisis Although, onlookers might think wearing similar dresses is cool, most twins detest this. "I would hate wearing the same dress like my sister's on most special occasions. This would add to the confusion and would get extremely annoying," says Nitya Singhal, a BMM student. Identity crisis is one of the biggest issues that twins face; they are often mistaken as the other one. This creates a lot of rifts between the two, and in most cases stays with them even after they grow up.

Coping with competition Most twins are characteristically different from each other, they have complete unique qualities. However, if one is better than the other, it creates a lot of problem for the other one to cope with the constant competition. Parents, teachers and friends start comparing the two in terms of good and bad, which worsens with age. "In fact, there are times when this competitive feeling makes either one dominating or suppressive," says Girija Nair, a counsellor.

Career choices "To each his own, if one is a brilliant student and chooses to be an engineer and the other one an artist, doesn't mean that the other one is in any way less in abilities. Career choice is a major issue among identical twins as people think they have the same aptitude," adds Nair. Although, they look similar, most twins are poles apart when it comes to making choices. Nonetheless, twins are subject to constant advices from people about the choices they make in life, especially about their careers.

Peer pressure It usually happens with twins when they are in schools and colleges, their aptitude in studies and the choice of friends is very closely noticed. If one has better grades and good camaraderie, while the other turns out to be a vagabond, everyone seems to be eyeing their moves. In fact, friends and relatives start questioning the weaker twin about his/her whereabouts and constantly pressurise him/her to follow the better twin.
Who gets better with age? Although, competition and envy take a backseat with age, what creeps in are ego clashes, concerns if the other one looks better with age and if they live a better life. "A lot of these issues are never surfaced; it's only the twins who experience these internal conflicts. It bitters their relationship further, and hence what looks like the ideal pair of siblings gradually turns into people who hardly extend a hand to each other," says relationship counsellor Sadhana Patil.

How to tackle common skin complaints

If you're suffering from skin-related problems like acne, eczeme to spider veins, don't fret! You can easily cure them at home.

Nutritionist Keri Filtness has offered her expert advice on the most common skin-related problems and how one can tackle them, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

- Spider veins: Spider veins are tiny capillaries that run close to the surface of the skin and look like fine red, or sometimes purple, small wiggly lines. They are most commonly found on the face or legs.

Steps to take care: Ensure that you are well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water daily as dehydration may lead to fluid retention, causing spider veins to develop. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables in a variety of colours as these will provide a wide variety of plant compounds which may be helpful as antioxidants to prevent damage to blood vessels and to support collagen production.

- Acne: Acne is a common skin condition that causes red pimples on the skin, especially the face, due to tiny holes in the skin becoming blocked. The Sebaceous gland produces sebum, which 'oils' the skin.

Steps to take care: Eat a nutrient-dense diet, including foods such as unsalted nuts and seeds, avocado, oily fish, fruits and vegetables and wholegrain products. Try to cut down on processed foods and drink plenty of water. Cleanse the skin thoroughly but gently as harsh cleansers can strip the skin of oil. Try to avoid choosing products that contain mineral oil as they can block your pores.

- Eczema: Eczema is a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, dry and cracked. It often occurs in areas with folds of skin such as behind the knees or the inside of the elbows.

Steps to take care: Increase your intake of 'good' fats such as those found in nuts, seeds and oily fish. Keep a food diary to identify any potential food allergies or intolerances which make the condition worse. Always speak to your general practitioner before cutting foods from your diet. Fish oil provides a good supply of Omega 3 fatty acids which are involved in the production of compounds which reduce inflammation.

Tea recipes that are delicious to the T!

The regular beverage seems to be turning over a new leaf in the city...
Mumbai has been seeing a smorgasbord of food infusions, `smoky' nitrogen desserts, plus coffee cooking, and to add to that, of late, a whole lot of experimenting with the simple tea leaf too. City foodies are using teabased spice rubs for meat, making eggs a la a tea soak and using it in infusions for cakes and other bakes. Its charms lie in its depth, aroma and flavour, and being able to enhance almost any dish. A little black tea does wonders to fresh fruit soaked in it. Green tea (matcha) ice cream is becoming the go-to dessert on menus everywhere and tea leaves used as a marinade lend a richness to meat.Read on to know how tea is no longer enjoyed in the usual way...

WORKS WELL AS A MARINADE

Blogger and food photographer Assad Dadan has used tea as a marinade. "This is a unique, yet unusual combination of flavours. I saw it being used on a cooking show a couple of seasons back -duck breasts smoked with tea leaves -and I knew it could work equally with chicken fillets," he says, adding, "I tried a different version -not by smoking the tea leaves, but by boiling water with a mixture of tea powder, crushed tea leaves, dash of soy , star anise, brown sugar, sesame oil and a stick of cinnamon. I cooled that down and used it as a marinade (kept for four hours) for the pounded chicken fillets. Once marinated, you can place them on a griddle or in an oven."

TEA INFUSED POHA AND TEA FIRNI!

There's no need to limit yourself with tea when using it in the kitchen, believes tea aficionado Kavita Mathur. "Did you know our grandparents had used the concept when it came to everyday cooking? Take for instance, the Chhole Pindi, in which black tea is added to the soaked kabuli chana. But today, tea is still considered a new ingredient. The irony is, we have so many tea estates and varieties, but don't experiment much. There is actually so much one can do with it, like in the West." She innovated with a few recipes to come up with `marbled' eggs, where boiled eggs are soaked with a Sri Lankan black tea to give a `streaked', aromatic result. "I did a delicious tea poha and tea upma, where green tea water is added in the cooking process to give a subtle flavour. I even added it to savoury sauces for pizzas and pastas."

She also used fermented green tea on a Burmese salad and came up with an aromatic `tea firni" where a black Darjeeling tea infusion is added to the thickened milk and a few leaves are used as garnish." What's the key to using tea in food? "For one, ensure the leaves are of a good quality . Also, stick to the quantity and brewing times as anything overdone will lead to a sharp taste," she informs.

HOW ABOUT MASALA CHAI ICE CREAM AND TEA CAKES?

The savoury apart, tea also makes fantastic pairing with dessert! Food expert Zorawar Kalra has come up with a `chai ice cream' that he says is, "An Indian chai blend with home-made ice cream and a masala foam, served in a cutting glass, with dalchini cookies on the side." Tea's flavour and aroma also make it apt to bake with. City dessert maker Ayushi Shah has conjured up a few tea-infused desserts like a masala chai cake, Earl Grey scented chocolate ganache and green teapoppy cookies.

PARTY MENU IDEA: FRUITBASED TEAS

HOT APPLE TEA

This one can be quite a warmer, so it's apt for the upcoming winter. To make it, you brew the tea normally, then add the juice of fresh apples (or use tinned juice) to it. Add a pinch of nutmeg, a small cinnamon stick and two teaspoons of honey and boil this for about five minutes. Strain and enjoy.

STRAWBERRY INFUSION

This chilled tea with pieces of strawberry and mint leaves can be very refreshing. The process is sim ple, you boil water and add strawberries and mint to it and let it simmer for a few minutes. Now, add the tea bag for a minute. Remove and once cool, place it in the refrigerator.

INTERESTING TEAS ACROSS THE GLOBE

RUSSIA: FROM A SAMOVAR

In Russia, tea is traditionally prepared in a 'samovar' (large metal urn) with the zavarka (concentrated black tea) and kipyatok (hot water).Sometimes, three teapots are placed on top of each other (the smallest on top has mint tea, the middle has black tea and the bottom one holds the hot water). These are combined and diluted with the hot water as per preference. The tea is poured into a podstakanniki or a glass with a silver holder.

TURKEY: BLACK AND STRONG

A folk saying from Turkey goes, `Caysiz sohbet, aysiz gok yuzu gibidir' (conversations sans tea are like the night sky without the moon). Tea here is had black without milk, and often served with baklava and halva.

MOROCCO: WITH MINT

Also called Tuareg Tea, a glass of Moroccan tea with fresh mint, is part of social gatherings and had all day long! Best sweetened with honey, the tea is to be relished unhurriedly. It is calming and relieves indigestion and congestion.

JAPAN: OCHA WITH SUSHI

In Japan, green tea (ocha) is served with sushi. Green tea is also the main element of the traditional tea ceremony.

SAUDI ARABIA: TEA WITH DATES

In Saudi Arabia, chai or tea is a strong blend (had black), often spiced with cardamom and saffron or mint leaves and some sugar. Guests are usually served hot cups of black tea with dates as a sign of cordiality.

VISUAL DRAMA: BLOOMING TEA

In blooming tea (an artisan tea), green tea leaves are sewed around a flower bud."Once placed in a large kettle or glass and the water infuses it, the drama begins," says tea stylist Radhika Batra Shah.

Restaurant review: The Hungry Monkey

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 06 November 2014 | 18.48

On a Tuesday evening, The Hungry Monkey is surprisingly filling up its tables and fast. Surprisingly, because the restaurant is located in Safdarjung Enclave's B-6 market, which was once a crowd-puller but till recently was lying unnoticed as Delhi's dining enthusiasts moved to greener pastures in the form of Hauz Khas Village (HKV) and then to the Cyber Hub in Gurgaon.
But the folks behind The Hungry Monkey (THM) know better. They brought a similar revival to two other sleepy parts of the town - Defence Colony and Lodhi Colony markets - with their previous, successful ventures Red Monkey resto-pub and Ploof deli, respectively.

Ask Abhishek Patnaik, one of the (visible) partners of the company, about the obsession with the primate in particular and he says it's just a quirky title that has stayed with them (of course, it helped that their first venture, Red Monkey, kicked-off pretty well).

The restaurant is spread across three levels and corresponds to its tagline: Eat, Drink, Play. The first level (Eat) is an industrial-inspired space with its bare brick walls, retro robots and mini table fan as installations, a stone bench with the quote 'The universe is made up of stories, not atoms" etched upon it, and bare light bulbs. This is also the 'family restaurant' space so if you were to walk-in with a toddler, they will help you with a high-chair. The second level (Drink) is an elegant cocktail bar serving classic and signature cocktails and small plates from the tapas menu. The top level (Play) is possibly the best feature of the restaurant with an open terrace adorned with a canopy of ferns, creepers, and potted plants, and tables overlooking the Deer Park. It is at this level you realise that this is indeed a great location for a restaurant, away from blaring music of an adjacent restaurant (here's looking at you HKV) or the traffic noise.

While THM has a good selection of wines and liquor, both from overseas and domestic, the wise choice here is to go for their ingenious cocktails. Sample the robust and aromatic Manhattan 'smoked' cocktail - which is basically bourbon poured into a whiskey glass that's smoked with a hickory charcoal. And it tastes divine!

The kitchen at THM is helmed by the young but immensely gifted chef Noah Barnes, who dishes out contemporary global cuisine with French influences - typically called Californian Cuisine. First to arrive is an elegantly plated roasted beetroot tartare topped-off with mascarparone and pine nuts. The creamy and salty tang of mascarparone pairs well with the sweetness of the beets and the pine nuts deliver the much-required crunch to the dish.

Another great appetiser to go for at THM is the smoked Atlantic salmon carpaccio. The salmon, sliced thin as paper, comes with a sprinkling of Mediterranean herbs that subtly heighten the delicate flavours. The cucumber and dill with sour cream and mustard salad that comes with the dish, balances the saltiness of the salmon. The potted chicken liver pate on a toast, plated with prune and onion confit is flavourful, albeit for a seasoned palate.

For mains, the baked fillet of sole served on a bed of saffron-infused couscous, shines the most. While the fillet is done just right, the best bit about the dish is its buttery sauce, with the right amount of acidity and sweetness rendered from the American lemon.

As we get to the end of the meal, we have to speak above the din as most of the tables have now been occupied and the kitchen is working on full swing. While running a restaurant is no monkey business, The Hungry Monkey sure knows what it's doing.

Rating: Food - 3.5; Service - 3.5, Decor - 3.5
Meal for two: Rs2000 (without alcohol)
Address: B 6/6, DDA Market, Opposite Deer Park, Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi

The deadline-missing personality

What is making you miss all the deadlines?

Generating results and timely delivery of assignments are two of the biggest factors that shape the career of an individual. The room for error is minimal and any shortfall is detrimental to the modern-day career. As a member of the corporate clan, you don't work in a vacuum; your assignment is mostly a step in the bigger chain of tasks and work. If you are the weakest link in the chain and the whole ecosystem is disrupted, be ready to get fired even though the delay may be minimal. It is not about the delay on your part; it is about the cascading effect it has on the entire workflow and the corporate deliverables.
So what are the common things, which add up to delaying the deliverables?

YOU ARE A PERFECTIONIST
Perfection is not because of an individual; perfection is a mindset that pervades the organisation and is deep-rooted in its culture. If by any chance your organisation's ecosystem were not great, you would forever be in the `work, re-work' loop.Perfectionism is tough to let go of because people tend to see it as a positive trait and are happy in delaying the product. You pride yourself in never being wrong, your perfectionism stems from collecting more data than others do to improve the chances of a fault-free decision and therefore, you detest making decisions early on without complete data. The real test is in being someone who can make decisions with 80 per cent of the data. Trust your intuition a little bit more and with your good experience, you wouldn't stray too far.

YOU PROCRASTINATE
One of Murphy's laws says, "The first 90 per cent of the tasks take ten per cent of the time and the other ten per cent take 90 per cent of your time." You believe that keeping things open till the last minute will lead to better decisions and your history is a testimony to the fact. You like working with your team extremely hard in the last leg of the project. According to you, burning the midnight oil with the team makes the team bond better and people who don't subscribe to this thought, are not a good cultural fit; they need to be coached at best or sacked for the common good.

YOU DON'T LIKE TAKING RISKS
Taking action may involve pushing the envelope, taking chances, charting newer paths and traversing newer terrains. Doing these things does put you at risk, as you will be prone to more misfires and mistakes. However, history says that successful executives have made more mistakes in their career than those who are not so successful.

You believe in measuring risks and taking a cautious approach. Why should you be the one foraying into newer ideas? Your task is to execute along the set-lines and when anything falls outside the boundary, the best thing to do is to wait and watch for others to jump. It is always safer to side with the majority; with this, you can never be blamed.

YOU GET CAUGHT IN THE PARALYSIS OF ANALYSIS
You firmly believe that the data on hand needs to be analysed and dissected to the `T' and you believe in statistics only.Emotions and beliefs are of no use and should not be used to substitute for analysis. Once you complete the decisions, there are quite a few options and each of those hypotheses need to be tested and simulations need to be run. All this takes time and you fail to understand why the world doesn't understand such a simple need. Decisions are important and the company needs to wait till all the minute details are flushed out.

Don't try to get all the answers, leave some things to fate and put all the pros and cons of your decision on the table for everyone to see and comment on. Take decisions with lesser data using the power of your people network. Don't worry about being successful all the time; it's neither practical nor possible.

5 Compliments your man wants to hear

Here's a list of things you can say to your man, to let him know that you appreciate him and that he's special.

Unlike the ones from the opposite sex, women are accustomed to receiving compliments - from the random guy at the pub to the street whistler! On the other hand, men rarely get a compliment. So fire off a meaningful compliment to your man and make way for a steaming night ahead.

Boy, you can work it!
Tell your man how awesome he is in the bedroom — this one definitely ranks at the top of his list! A guy dies to hear how good he is at the skills he works so hard to perfect.

What would I do without you?
Guys love to feel needed. Whether it is to help you understand bank work or simply open a jam jar — it is one of the greatest feelings for a man that you can't live without them. Cuddle him and tell him it would have been impossible for you to do anything without him.

Crave to spend more time with you
Sometimes you need to connect with his inner being as well. No matter how much you compliment him on his looks or his skills — your efforts will go waste if you don't let him know how much you love him and want to be with him. Tell him that it is his innate characteristics that draw you closer to him.

You are excellent at your job!
Praising your guy's brain power is a must! Every guy wants to know that he is awesome at his task. Go that extra mile and tell him how much you admire him for the way he shows his dedication and loyalty towards his work. This one will touch him...really!

You're so freaking hot!
This is one compliment that will instantly lift his spirits. Complimenting a guy on his good looks is okay, but it is a different thing altogether to tell him what makes him so desirable — serve up his accolade, gently touch his body parts to add an extra sizzle to it.

Restaurant review: Asia in box (Pan Asian Take Out)

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 05 November 2014 | 18.48

An authentic pan Asian fine a tiny dining menu isn't the first thing we'd expect to find at , new-age take-out in our vicinity , but it's the undoubted highlight at Asia in Box! Hang on till you experience their professional handling of the orders on the phone, see their tangerine, seethrough, neat packaging and systematic home delivery with right condiments, chopsticks, disposable cutlery , place mats et al. Asia in Box is a fresh east-meets-west venture concept that has already expanded to include two more branches in Rajarhat, New Town and Survey Park, Santoshpur.
DECOR

It is a much smaller space than we expect, nestled in the hubbub of the orthodox part of Hazra Road. The lit signage opens right into a junc tion -giving a much wel come sense of light. The murals on the facade depict scenes from different parts of the Orient. The show window glass wall opens into a small reception counter and waiting area.

Beyond this, our atten tion is totally focussed on the multi-folds of the artistic menu.

FOOD

Covering a large part of Oriental Asia -China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, Thailand and Mongolia -the menu is a well-researched blend. Our first learning is that the Asian combo lunch box (`225) conceptualized by the house chefs to cover all six countries everyday and is available only till 3.30 pm. So we ramble on to discover all the cuisines on our own. We choose a Chinese Sichuan's special hot & sour chicken soup (`140) when our first choice of Mongolian lamb hot pot (`325) is turned down as not available, regular portions of Thai glass noodles salad (`195) and crab meat egg fried rice (`225), the Korean sangeyopsal (`495), an assorted sushi platter (`495 for 12), a Mongolian chicken noodles in hot garlic sauce (`355) and a Thai baked coconut custard (`215) -not available, yet again.

PLUS & MINUS

The Sichuan special soup soaks up the shreds of leafy veggies and stringy chicken to a thick texture with a hot and sour tang. The Thai salad is a biggish sharing portion, served in foil to hold the moisture -a well-tossed bundle of vermicelli noodles, with ribbons of vegetables -but lacks the spicy punch. The sushi platter is an elegant offering of vegetable sticks, fresh prawns and salmon bits handrolled with zest and served with soy , wasabi and sugar coated ginger. The Mongolian wet noodles with vegetables and chicken is a tempting change. And the Thai style fried rice comes stuffed in a small bucket, streaked with spongy crab meat and eggs. Both works fine with the pan seared pork slices whacked with Korean herb dust, but could have been better with a prominent garlicky lash

What̢۪s your kid watching?

Moms are concerned about kids' TV watching patterns...

With exams over and the new session in schools just beginning, the pressure to study has taken a back seat in the city. The fact that the intense summer heat is already on its peak is not helping either, and most Thane kids are spending a large amount of their time lounging around at home, watching TV. We spoke to a few to find out how the parents coping with this. It was seen that most parents are making sure that the time they are spending watching television is supervised and that their remote wielding kids are not left unattended for too many hours at a stretch.

There needs to be a fixed time for TV viewing

Sona Sehgal, a Vasant Vihar resident and mother of a five-year-old, is worried about the time her son spends in front of the television screen. "He goes to a CBSE school and his new session began a week back. The fact that there is not too much homework since it is the beginning of the year, leaves my son with a lot of spare time and he is hooked on to Doremon and Chota Bheem," she says. And in an attempt to restrict her son's TV viewing, she got her child enrolled for and art hobby class and for football classes after school. This helped to stop the TV viewing craze.
There are parents who are strict about their child's viewing habits and make it a point to put a ceiling on the number of viewing hours. Chitra Ghadge's daughter is 10 and has a very full day in school but after coming back the child is stuck at home for long hours. She says, "We stay on Ghodbunder Road and our house is new. Not all the flats in the building is yet occupied so we do not have too many neighbours. That is the reason why she does not go out much and wants to watch television all the time she is home." However, Ghadge says that she allows her to watch TV only for an hour. "A fixed time for TV viewing makes things clear and the child understands that there is a life beyond it. Earlier she would keep watching and every time I would ask her to shut the TV she would ask for a little more time and thereby end up watching for hours. The fixed time has helped to bring in discipline."

I make it a point to watch TV with my child

When parents watch television with their kids, they can monitor and control what is being watched completely. Sachin Patil who has two sons ages 10 and 8, says, "I like to watch TV with my kids. There are so many educational and travel channels these days that have some great progammes. Since I have inculcated the habit in my children to watch these channels, the not-so-good channels are kept at bay." His wife Prajakta says, "The kiddie TV shows like Shinchan are no longer watched in our house. When we saw those we realised how badly behaved the kids were and that they could have a bad influence. Now it is only our approved channels that the kids watch and TV time is always chaperoned.

I make time for my child so that TV viewing is minimum

When it comes to spending time with kids, Prerana Bhide, who stays in Wagle Estate is very keen. "Single children like mine are porne to TV addiction. I am trying to make sure that she does not go down that lane. I make it a point to spend quality time with my 7-year-old. We bake together, go out to play in the nearby park with her friends, cycle around in the compound. After school and all the physical activity later, she is not too keen for TV thankfully."

Not a TV addict yet because there are other attractions.

Children these are extremely gadget friendly, most of the time much more than their parents could ever be. And that is sometimes a boon because the TV viewing time is automatically restricted. Darshana Shah from Manpada says, "My six-year-old son is almost addicted to my tablet. There are some games that he loves to play and I make sure that I am there with him when he is at it. Once a day for around one hour in the evening he sits down to watch TV and even if I am not there with him, I make sure he only watches the kiddie channels or educational channels."

Light & fresh: Body mists

Invest in this dual-purpose product to save time, space and money

If you're among those who love light, subtly scented skin, body mist is your go-to product. Body mists are light, airy and have a fresh appeal about them. Allow the body mist to dry completely be fore you dress up.

Spray the body mist lightly on a hairbrush and run it through your hair to infuse a light fragrance to your , mane.

How to make your own body mist:
What you need: A cup of water, 4 drops of any essential oil (lavender, ylang ylang etc.) and a mister spray bottle

Health benefits of mushrooms

A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground on soil or on its food source.

Button Mushrooms are popular in India and are easily available at any gourmet store's vegetable aisle. Listed below are the benefits of mushrooms that we never knew.
Mushrooms are a good source of B vitamins which also play an important role in the nervous system.
Mushrooms are also a source of important minerals. Potassium is an important mineral found in mushrooms. It aids in the maintenance of normal fluid and mineral balance, which helps control blood pressure.
They help to strengthen the immune system as well. Mushrooms provide ergothioneine (which is a naturally occurring amino acid) a naturally occurring antioxidant that may help protect the body's cells.
Mushrooms are the only source of vitamin D in the produce aisle and one of the few non-fortified food sources often grouped with vegetables, mushrooms provide many of the nutritional attributes of produce, as well as attributes more commonly found in meat, beans or grains.

Why a rebound is not good for you

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 04 November 2014 | 18.47

A rebound often calls for trouble. Here's how to find out why going in for one could end up making you miserable.

Right after you break up, falling for another person is inevitable. Especially when that person is there to support you, lend a helping hand and understand you. However, falling for this person could only mean that you are putting your friendship at stake. Here's how it can cause you trouble —

Will confuse you: A rebound relationship often confuses you. This is because you cannot understand the difference between love and friendship. When you have somebody to support you in your tough times, it is only because that person cares for you and wants you to move ahead in your life. If you fall in love with such a person without giving it enough time, you are bound to get confused between the friendship you have with this person and the feeling of love for him/her.

You may make the same mistakes: The chances of repeating the same mistakes are high. This is because you've just come out of a relationship and haven't been able to figure out the mistakes that you made in it. Taking time to understand your faults will help you in your next relationship.

May become even more vulnerable: A rebound makes you trust the person you are spending time with all the more. And in case it doesn't work out, you will be heart broken again. This not only makes you vulnerable but will also cause a lot of pain and hurt as time passes by.

Fun activities to do with your guy at home

Here are a few fun things that you can do with your boyfriend at home...

If you are planning to spend quality time with your guy at your place, here's what you can plan for him this weekend -

Play video games together: What best than to get your man's favourite video game and play it together. Not only will this surprise him but will also make him feel happy. But make sure that you keep the game healthy and don't indulge in senseless arguments.

Organise a cooking competition: If your man loves to cook, organise a cooking competition. Ask him to cook something that you love, while you do the same for him. Set a time by which both of you will finish. Whoever finishes fast can win a prize at the end.

Go for a movie marathon: There can be nothing better and relaxing than watching your favourite movies or TV series together. Ask your guy to download the shows that the two of you love to watch and you can spend the rest of the day watching those shows while munching on your favourite snacks and drinks.

Wear your sweatshirt right

A sweatshirt is a must-have item in your autumn-winter wardrobe. Mix it up with jeggings or team it up with hot pants to jazz up the look.
Sweatshirts are not only comfortable and cosy, but they can be high on style and apt for different occasions, if worn the right way.

Pop star Rihanna, for example, wore one with a pair of denim cut-offs. Her red lips, blown-out tresses and nude heels ensured a feminine edge to her look, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

You can keep your legs bare or wear something more form-fitting on the bottom to help balance out the look. Another way to style a sweatshirt is to layer it with a white shirt underneath. This will smarten the look.

Try also pairing it with a pair of trousers and heels for work.

Let the bottom of the shirt poke out from the sweatshirt, and the cuffs on the shirt come longer than the arms of it too. A statement necklace will add a glamorous touch to the look.

If you want a look that suits the workplace and a date, try mixing and matching your sweatshirt with a pair of shorts, trousers, mini or midi skirt.

Have you ever had to give away your favourite pair of jeans even though you didn't want to?

Now, you can reuse them instead of bearing the pain of parting with them. If your denims are old, torn or simply don't fit you, here are some creative alternative uses for them. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

02

Lampshade: If you're bored of your lampshade, just cut your denim into small pieces and stick them on the lampshade top. This way, you have a new lampshade in no time. Also, you could always make your own lampshade from scratch and use the denim patches for a cover.

03

Cushion covers: Cut the fabric into small squares and stitch them together to form two big squares, enough to contain a cushion. Then, place the two big squares, one on top of the other, and stitch three sides. Attach a zipper on the unstitched side. You now have a funky patchwork denim cushion cover. Multi-purpose holder: If you have a lot of jeans that aren't being used, this is probably the best thing to make. Snip the pockets off all the jeans and keep them aside. Cover a thick board with a fabric of your choice and stick the pockets on to the board with fabric glue. You could use this board as a pen holder in your room or put it up in the kitchen to hold your cutlery. Use it any way you like.

Coasters: This is probably the simplest to make. Cut an art board into squares. Now, cut denim into squares that are slightly bigger than your art board pieces. Stick the fabric on to the cardboard with fabric glue and wrap the edges over the sides of the squares. Your denim coasters are ready. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

Cocoa may reverse memory decline

Age-related memory decline can be reversed with a little alteration in your diet, specifically the inclusion of cocoa flavanols, showed a research.

Flavanols are naturally occurring antioxidants and are also found in tea leaves and in certain fruits and vegetables.

The study provides the first direct evidence that one component of age-related memory decline in humans is caused by changes in a specific region of the brain - the dentate gyrusa - and that this form of memory decline can be improved by a dietary intervention.

"When we imaged our research subjects' brains, we found noticeable improvements in the function of the dentate gyrus in those who consumed the high-cocoa flavanol drink," said lead author, Adam Brickman, associate professor at the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in the US.

In the study, 37 healthy volunteers, ages 50 to 69, were randomised to receive either a high-flavanol diet (900 mg of flavanols a day) or a low-flavanol diet (10 mg of flavanols a day) for three months.

The high-flavanol group performed significantly better on the memory test.

"If a participant had the memory of a typical 60-year-old at the beginning of the study, after three months that person on average had the memory of a typical 30- or 40-year-old," senior author (CUMC), Scott A. Small added.

The researchers noted that the product used in the study is not the same as chocolate, and they caution against an increase in chocolate consumption in an attempt to gain this effect.

The study appeared online in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

How to make sure your house is germ free

Written By Unknown on Senin, 03 November 2014 | 18.47

Your house can be a breeding area for germs if you don't take enough care. Start by ensuring that you don't keep dirty clothes lying around for long.

Make sure they're washed everyday or at least once in two days. And make it a habit to clean your washing machine as well. An effective way to do this is to add a fistful of bleach in it and let it run for a few minutes. This will kill all the accumulated viruses and bacteria in the machine.

Another problem areas can be dirty towels — change them every few days and wash them in warm water with disinfectant to remove germs. Keep different towels for each member of the family. Change the linen on your bed every weekend. And don't allow food on the bed. It will only attract ants and mold.

Use a sanitiser to clean glass and plastic surfaces and don't forget to clean cupboard and door knobs and handles. Use a mini vacuum cleaner to clean your computer keyboard. You'll be amazed at the number of germs it can collect. Your kitchen sink can also be a breeding ground for germs so ensure that it is clean. The same goes for your kitchen platform.

7 ways to choose the right life partner

Selecting the right life partner is necessary to lead a happy married life. Here's how you can select your perfect one

There are many factors that one needs to consider when choosing a life partner. The most important aspect is to consider things that are crucial to you.

Find someone who you can connect with easily
It is very important to choose somebody who you can easily strike a conversation with. This way, you can enjoy doing things and talking about them together without getting bored.

Potential partner with same interests
Selecting someone who shares a lot of common interests with you will work in your favour. Remember that all your interests don't really have to be the same, but some would do. Says clinical psychologist and relationship expert Seema Hingorrany, "When you decide to spend your life with someone, you must look at things that the two of you would love to do together. For example, if you are a movie buff, you would ideally like to be with someone who enjoys movies as well. This will make your life interesting."

Consider your partner's intellect
If you are a laid-back person and your partner is an over-achiever, that could lead to a threat in your marriage. You must see eye to eye on how both of you are able to think and process things.

It's okay to have standards
While choosing a life partner, you need to consider your and your family's standards. Though it's okay to choose someone who probably does not belong to the same strata of society as yours, make sure that he/she's not completely off the mark.

You should have respect for one another
You obviously cannot spend your life with someone who has no respect for you or your dreams/goals or your personality. So, choose someone who will acknowledge you for the rest of your life.

Is your potential trustworthy
In this day and age, it is extremely important to choose someone you can trust. You definitely cannot lead a happy marriage if you cannot trust each other or have faith.

Spend time together
Just as important as it is to have similar interests, it is also crucial to be with someone who gives you enough time and who you would love to spend time with.

Ways you can lower your cholesterol

While medication will help you control this disease, lifestyle changes also help to keep cholesterol under control.

High cholesterol can prove to be detrimental to your health if it isn't got under control. While good cholesterol is important for your body to work properly — it helps you digest your food well and also helps produce vitamin D, too much of it can cause a number of health problems like plaque in your arteries, which, in turn, causes heart disease. While medication will help you control this disease, lifestyle changes also help.

Make sure that your diet includes a lot of legumes like chickpeas, lentils and beans. These foods are said to lower bad cholesterol. Another food item that will help are apples. Packed with a host of nutrients, apples are great for those looking at lowering bad cholesterol levels. Walnuts are excellent as well. You can also include oatmeal and high-fibre foods. Also eat fatty fish, which is packed with generous doses of omega-3 fatty acids that reduce the risk of developing ant types of blood clots. Don't just focus on your diet to fight cholesterol though. Make sure that you're physically active as well. The more you exercise the better it is for your overall health and especially your cholesterol. Workout at least three to four times a week. Lower your alcohol intake to the bare minimum and quit smoking.

What to expect in your third trimester

If you've sailed through the first six months of your pregnancy relatively smoothly, you're among the lucky few.

The third and the last trimester means that you're closer than ever before to giving birth and you need to be very careful during this time. This is also the time when most women suffer from bad backaches — this is thanks to your expanding belly and all that extra weight that your back now has to manage. You hips will also tend to hurt — try and take it easy now. Sleeping on your side will be of great help as will flat heel shoes. Some women also bleed — call your doctor as soon as you spot anything to be on the safe side. White discharge is another common occurrence.

This happens because your cervix has started to dilate. Unless it is heavy discharge, there is nothing to worry about. Certain women also experience mild contractions — this is just your body's way of preparing you for labour. Your breasts also tend to get bigger — a sign that you're ready for breastfeeding. Some women also experience slight discharge from their nipples. Constipation and heartburn are also common occurrences. The latter happens because pregnant women produce extra amounts of the hormone known as progesterone. You will also feel more tired than usual and your feet will start to swell.

6 breakfast cereals healthier than others

Did you know that even a bowlful of 'healthy' breakfast cereals could add to your calorie count?

Doctors, for sometime now, have debated on the permissible level of sugar in breakfast cereals, especially of the coloured and sugar-frosted varieties. While it is advisable to check the nutrition value of the breakfast cereal before buying it, one should also consciously make healthier lifestyle choices by having all cereals with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, and avoiding to add extra sugar among others, but if you still like a bit of sweetness in your breakfast substitute white sugar with fruits (even dry fruits) like banana, dates, raisins, or any citrus fruit. A wholesome breakfast it would make for, while staving off your urge for midday snacking. Even those maintaining a workout routine can derive maximum benefit from this habit, as it also helps them get past their weight loss plateau.

Medical doctor and wellness expert, Dr Shikha Sharma helps us list breakfast cereals that are healthier than the rest.

Porridge
Porridge is the most healthy breakfast idea. It is rich in minerals and has high fibre content that keeps blood sugar under control. Use a little jaggery if you wish to sweeten it, otherwise you can top it with fresh fruits or sprinkle some raisins and almonds.

Cornflakes
Abundant in carbohydrates, iron and Vitamin B complex, cornflakes work very well for school kids and elders too. It is a particularly good breakfast in the rainy months because the body starts holding water owing to high moisture in the air.

Wheat flakes
It is a modification of wheat porridge and is a nice change from run-of-the-mill breakfast cereals. But unless fortified with extra calcium, it is not much use having just wheat flakes for breakfast.

Oatmeal
A bowl of oats in the morning is great for those suffering high cholesterol and diabetes, provided you don't add extra sugar to it. The high fibre content in oats balances the blood sugar, and relieves people prone to depression.

Muesli
Muesli is a great breakfast choice as it has raisins, almonds and four different grains. The comparatively high sugar content in muesli keeps growing children and those into sports, energetic. It can be served with both milk and yoghurt. You can creatively garnish the muesli and serve it up as a quick evening snack to kids.

Poha/rice crispies
The poha version of rice crispies is popular in Indian households, and makes for a light and healthy breakfast. But make sure your poha is only lightly sauteed.

Aside from the usual cornflakes and oats, there is a whole assortment of chocolate, honey and fruit-flavoured breakfast cereals that find takers among young kids. Just how good or bad an idea is it?

Avers Dr Sharma, "Although it is best to go for natural cereals, it is alright to break free from the mundane breakfast chart once in a while. The purpose is to serve up a good mix that is both appealing to the taste buds and has nutritional value."

Next time you are at the departmental store picking breakfast cereals, don't get carried away by the glossy packaging.

Do you have an online identity?

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 02 November 2014 | 18.48

A study abroad has claimed that there is a link between how we portray ourselves online in social media and how we are in person.

Back home, is this really the case? Or are we 'different' people in real life?

We live in an always-on environment where we are accessible all the time to friends and relatives all over the world. Messages are delivered instantly and video chats in real time are the norm.

Recently, an Australian researcher named Megan Pozzi from the Queensland University of Technology found among other things, that online 'representations' of people are as valid as how people are IRL, or, In Real Life. In order to easily identity behaviour types online, categorisations were made in this study.

Explaining this, Pozzi stated in the study, "There is a common belief that the way we portray ourselves offline is authentic, while our online identity is somehow fake, but I believe all of these different representations are equally valid. People are performing their identities all the time. Whether we realise it or not, we are broadcasting different things to the world depending on who's watching. In particular, girls use status updates like they would fashion or music to assert themselves as an authority or as belonging to certain sub-groups." So, then, what do we think about it here?

"People do wear masks online. It's very difficult to be completely yourself on such a platform. I have people who tell me that they post what they'd like to be. Some couples might post 'happy' pictures on social media to show their friends that things are going great in the relationship when it's not. And then when a couple does unfortunately break up, their peers are bound to go, 'What happened? I thought they were happy together?'," says clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany.

When it comes to the genders, do girls post any differently from boys? Or do both behave the same way? Software consultant Vivek Ajwani seems to think so. "Many people both male and female who use social media as more than just a means to keep in touch often paint a picture of themselves as different from who they really are. The internet is a veil behind which people often become someone they always wanted to see themselves as but never really had the opportunity to be."

The problem with using the internet as a 'veil' to project a different image of ourselves is that we can be misunderstood by others. We also tend to subconsciously judge people based on what they say on social media. Social anthropologist, Dr Angad Chowdhry comments, "When I first joined social media, I felt that it was necessary to say things that would not be said in real life. It was the quickest way to differentiate oneself. It helped that most of it felt like I was shouting into a void — no one responded, so there was no understanding of the audience or consequence. Over time, I recognised that there is indeed an audience, that there is the potential of amplification and the inability to take back what is said. There is a greater respect for the medium now and I do not attempt to link it to my real life identity at all."

But Malika Hayden, a DJ who uses social media to communicate with audiences, says that the difference between how someone comes across on the web versus face-to-face can often be jarring, "Although I have never met someone in person whom I got to know through social media, but from stories I've heard from people, it can turn out to be a bit of a shock when in real life the person is nothing close to what you thought they would be."

Now that's something to think about the next time the urge for that next status update strikes you...

Types of social media posts according to the study
- Supplication (where people attempt to seem needy/self-deprecating in order to get attention)
- Exemplification (attempting to seem busy, dedicated or hardworking)
- Intimidation (attempting to seem threatening/powerful - essentially bullying)
- Ingratiation (using flattery/compliments in order to be seen as likeable)
- Self-promotion (where people point out their talents/abilities in order to be seen as skilful).
- Proclamation (where a user states what they're doing or feeling)
- Instigation (where users ask questions to start a conversation)
- Provocation (or making statements to offend or agitate others)

7 signs of a toxic relationship

When you are in a new relationship, the heady addictive feeling gets to you. And that is why, sometimes you invariably are blinded to the fact that the relationship may be corrosive. Here are a few signs.

When you are in a new relationship, the heady addictive feeling gets to you. And that is why, sometimes you invariably are blinded to the fact that the relationship may be corrosive. It may be doing you more harm than good. Here are some warning signs that can help you know whether you are in a toxic relationship.

Your relationship drains you: Research suggests that 70% of our energy drains are emotional, says health psychologist Dr Kanan Khatau Chikhal. She adds, "One of the first signs of a toxic relationship is how you feel after you meet your partner. Do you feel high-spirited and motivated or do you feel like a deflated balloon? It is subjective feeling." You need to move away from a relationship that stresses you out and takes away more than it can give you.

You're walking on eggshells: Do you think twice before uttering any line to your partner? The persistent fear of saying or doing something that might aggravate or upset him is a clear signal that your relationship is not balanced in your favour.

You start following your partner's habits to impress: Do you feel pressurised to drink more than what you are comfortable with, when you are out with your partner? Do you feel that you need to take up smoking just to impress him/her? If your relationship is making you take up negative habits, then you need to rethink.

Jealousy rears its ugly head: Jealousy and over possessiveness could be a symptom of an inferiority complex, states psychiatrist Dr Anjali Chhabria. "Initially, you feel happy that your partner wants to know every little detail about your day but over time, you realise that it is not because he/she loves you, but because he/she is insecure. This is unhealthy and can be a symptom of a larger problem like paranoia or a delusional disorder, which, if not acknowledged or treated, could become suffocating for the partner," she adds.

Your past errors are dug up frequently: When a partner resorts to citing examples like 'This is what you always do. Last month also...' or 'You were like this with your ex too', you know your relationship may be treading dangerous ground. Dr Chhabria says, "When a partner is insecure, he/she may be making a case history against you on a sub-conscious level. Anything that happens, he/she immediately recollects the past examples and keeps mentioning them. He/she doesn't concentrate on nor tries to solve the issue at hand." Ghosts of the past usually torment this kind of person, making life difficult for you too.

Your relationship is all about your partner: When you stop paying attention to your close friends and family because your partner takes up all your time, you should see the red flag. Dr Chhabria, says, "If you are unable to concentrate on anything because you are always catering to your partner's insecurities, you could be in a toxic relationship." Citing an example, she says that a girl had forgotten to wish her best friend on her birthday because her boyfriend took up all her time, and their relationship was always all about him.

Your partner's too clingy: In any relationship, one partner may assume that the other is very dependable, because he/she may fulfil certain psychological requirements that the other may have. When that partner is unavailable, one starts to get insecure and grumpy. This leads to the uncontrollable urge to be with the partner 24X7 and could be bad for the relationship. Sometimes, it results in stalking the partner or being insanely over possessive. Such an over-clingy and needy partner could be the reason for the end of a relationship.

Are you getting bored in your marriage?

Starting from the day that you ended your honeymoon, everything seems to be like a routine.

From the daily chores, to responsibilities, and even your sex life can sometimes be boring - and this problem would definitely not end by seeking another person out of your relationship. Having an affair is not the answer for a weakening relationship.

Say boo to boredom
There are so many ways so that you will not get bored with your marriage. First on the list is to have a spontaneous date with your husband or wife. An unplanned date can be a sweet surprise for your better-half. This also goes to show that you are still unpredictable after all those years and there's still a lot in you that your husband or wife has to know. Dine in at a local restaurant that you haven't been before. Take a ride to a place over-looking the city or the sunset. Situations like these are the most memorable. However, see to it that the kids, if you do have, are well-taken care of by a nanny, a babysitter or your in-laws.

Spice it up
Romance is vital in a relationship. Dress up or try positions that you haven't done before. Your partner will eventually change in the course of your married life and so does his sexual preferences. Be updated with the needs of your partner in bed. In order for a couple to have a long-lasting happy married life, there must always be a sexual compatibility between the two. Or else, a third-party will start to appear in the scene.

Space it out!
Don't be too clingy. Give your husband his poker-day and allow your wife to have her day-out with her girlfriends. In this way, you are taking time to miss each other's company.

Humour does it!
Don't forget to use humor and laugh at each other or with each other. Everybody loves someone who can accept his faults and laugh at them. Laughter is the best way to avoid isolation and boredom in marriage.

Nurturing matters
Provide for all the needs in order to satisfy your partner and your marriage in whole. Encouragement is also a must. No other person can encourage a husband or a wife except their better-halves.
