Holi is not just about colours, fun and frolic, it can also bring people closer, rekindle old ties and make way for new bonds. With the festival just around the corner, we spoke to experts, who suggested ways to make Holi parties hip 'n' happening.
Guest list
It can make or break any party. "Make sure all your guests are at least acquainted with each other so that they have a good time and you don't have to spend all your time introducing them to each other. The main idea should be to enjoy the party as much as your guests," said event planner Aman Chopra of The Party People. If it is a by-invitation-only party, make sure the invites mention it in bold. While inviting people through social media, ensure that it reaches only the ones it is intended for.
Dress code
Since colours show best on white, you can ask your guests to turn up in white, but colourfully accessorized. Try Party Hunterz for props like colourful fans (above) and hats (left). You can also keep scarves to give away. Not only will they protect the modesty of your guests once their whites become transparent, but also help in cleaning their hands and eyes once drenched in colour. "Lots of colourful accessories, pop-coloured nail art, retro eyewear and multicolour banjara tassels braided into the hair will spell tres-desi-chic," said designer Pranay Baidya.
Colours
If you are providing the colours to your guests, make sure you only use organic colours so that it doesn't harm their skin. Foam parties are big this year; you can arrange for that too. Keep pichkaris and buckets of water handy. "Also keep oversized glasses and wigs so that colour-shy guests can protect themselves," said Swati Siotia of Party Hunterz. "Use olive oil on your face and body. If you have coloured hair, oil your hair with warm coconut oil before starting the revelry. Apply coconut oil and apricot scrub afterwards to remove the colour," said beautician Prairna Khullar.
Food
Keep the menu simple. Many patisseries and cafes have come up with special Holi items like Bakstage's Rang Birangi Pizza, Yoforia's thandai-flavoured yogurt and Krazy For Chocolate's colourful cupcakes (bottom). Alternatively, serve homemade dahi vada and gujiya. For drinks, try smoothies and milkshakes. Also, serve your guests in colourful disposable plates and glasses. "Popsicles in flavours like lassi, ice tea and sangrias are a good idea. Serve the drinks in zip pouches to avoid spilling colours on your drinks," said mixologist Irfan Ahmed. MUSIC
Holi is no fun without classic tracks like Rang barse, Holi khele Raghuveera, Jai jai Shiv Shankar, Holiya mein ude de gulaal," said party enthusiast Davina Thacker. Do me a favour and Aaj na chodenge are also sure to get your guests grooving. "Among current tracks, you can keep Balam pichkari, Tune maari entriyaan, Baby doll, Sunny sunny, Chaar bottle vodka, Rang laga de re and Tattad tattad," said DJ Akash. Our advice? Hire a DJ if you want to dance and not get busy changing tracks.
Last but not the least, remember to create a festive and fun mood, which your guests will remember for a long time.
Enjoy the festival of colours!
