Tea cafes are the flavour

Wake up in the morning and the first thing that most Amdavadis do is brew a cup of hot chai.

In a latte-obsessed world, tea has always been the most popular beverage in Gujarat. A city where every nukkad boasts of a chai ki kitli, the beverage is slowly gaining ground with the masses in a completely different avatar. With special tea cafes sprouting up in every nook and corner of the city, seems like the tea is a new addiction, albeit a healthy one.

Tea outlets dedicated to give an out-of-the-world experience to tea lovers are hoping to take Amdavad's love for the beverage to a whole new level, with interesting offerings like hot tea, iced-tea, black tea, green tea, tea with milk, tea without milk, tea sticks, etc. Devendra Khuman, co-owner of one such outlet says, "Tea is the highest consumed beverage in India and is part of our culture. In Gujarat itself, the consumption of tea is so big, that every few metres you have kitlis. So we thought why not come up with a place where people can enjoy good quality chai at a reasonable rate." Milan Jadeja, owner of yet another outlet says, "In Rajkot we have 10 outlets of our cafe, so we thought of having a franchisee in Ahmedabad. Such cafes provide good ambience and tea at cheap rates."

Besides better ambience, these hip relaxing tea destinations offer exotic concoctions with a variety of options like almond tea, vanilla or jasmine flavoured green tea, kesar honey black tea, kachi keri iced tea, choco-coconut tea, watermelon iced-tea, kulhad tea, etc ranging from anything between `8 going up to ` 150! Khanjan Vaishnav, a research fellow and a teaholic, says, "It's a great concept that tea lovers are offered different-flavoured teas. I went to one such cafe recently and was amazed at the options they had!"

With increasing awareness of health benefits of tea, menus boast of brews that provide immune-boosting oxidants, meditative blends, enlightening mental focus blends and mind and body healing blends. Varun Agarwal, co-owner of an outlet which boasts of 74 varieties of tea, says, "We mainly targeted people of age above 30. It is a very new concept but Amdavadis like to try new things. People are becoming more and more aware of the health benefits of tea and there's a growing demand for the exotic flavours of chai."

Gone are the days when we saw friends sipping a cuppa at a kitli in the monsoon. With special tea cafes romanticizing the beverage with a number of varieties, tea lovers are spoilt for choice.
