Dermatologist and cosmetologist Dr Sneh Thadani tells us how to take care of your body and prevent harmful allergies and infections during Holi

Carnival of colours, or victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive. Along with fond memories of gulal, rain dancing, pichkaris and bhang, if you have repeated nightmares of skin and eye allergies or other serious problems due to the colours, this article's for you.

Hair: Liberally apply warm coconut oil or olive oil for 20-25 minutes before playing Holi. For dandruff, mix eight to ten drops of lemon in the oil and apply. This will help remove the colours off your hair easily.

Try and cover or tie your hair with a bandana or cap to decrease contact with colours.

It is important to remove the colour as soon as you are done playing. The longer you let the colour stay, the harder it is to remove.

Dust off all the dry colour before hitting the shower.

Wash the hair with a mild shampoo and do not over shampoo. Excessive shampooing tends to remove the essential oils from the hair, which in return make your hair dry and damaged.

If the colour doesn't come off immediately wash again in a day or two. Make sure to use a hair conditioner to prevent excessive drying off hair.

Skin: Avoid any parlour procedures 2-3 days before Holi so that the skin is not irritated or sensitive.

Wear clothes that cover a lot of your skin: Apply liberal amounts of a waterproof sunscreen (spf 30 or above) to your face, arms and other exposed areas of your body at least 30 mins before you step out to play. Some chemicals found in synthetic colours together with the ultraviolet sunlight can cause a photo-toxic reaction on your skin.

Those having sensitive skin should use a moisturizing sunscreen. This will form a thin layer on your skin and prevent the colours from reaching the deeper layers. It will also help to easily wash off the colours afterwards.

Alternatively one can apply coconut, almond or olive oil to the skin

Never sit in sunlight after playing with colours as it will make difficult to remove as well as harm your skin.

As soon as done playing wash your face with a mild cleanser, or a suitable face wash, do not use harsh soap on the face and avoid rubbing and scrubbing as it would further cause dryness and irritation of the skin.

Moisturize immediately. If you are prone to acne, avoid scrubbing.

Go for facial or facial bleach only a week after playing Holi. Give some time to your skin to recover from the damage.

For body: Use glycerin or aloe vera-based soaps. After bath apply generous amount of body lotion. Avoid taking baths frequently. This may result in dry skin.

Nails: The colours tend to accumulate in the nail folds, so you can protect them by applying nail paint.

Apply vaseline petroleum jelly beneath the nails and also over it. This will prevent permanent staining of your nails and adjacent area.

Eyes and lips: Do not wear lens while playing Holi as the colour might get into the lens and harm your eyes. Also avoid wearing spectacles. If you cannot do without it, be careful while playing as your face might end up getting hurt due to the edges of the glasses.

For lips, apply a generous layer of balm

If the skin appears irritated, is red or a rash appears, apply calamine lotion to calm the skin. If the skin does not settle down, consult your doctor.

Recent studies have found safety issues with all three forms in which the Holi colors are produced: pastes, dry colours and water colours. The various ingredients found in synthetic colours like lead oxide (black), mercury sulphide (red), aluminium bromide (silver), copper sulphate (green), prussian blue have been known to cause various health problems ranging from dermatitis (skin becoming red and blotchy), eye allergies, skin problems and even temporary blindness.

It is important to buy organic/herbal colours to play safe this Holi. Here's wishing everyone a colourful and safe Holi.
