Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's 'Little England'

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 30 Juni 2013 | 18.48

It is certainly my cup of tea. I love the beaches. I love the big city rush so don't get me wrong.

However there are always days in one's life when all that one wants is to get away from the maddening crowds, the hustle and bustle of the city, and the tropical heat of beach resorts.

The heart longs for that moment of solitude among green foliage and the crisp mountain air that fills you with wonder, drawing you closer in spirit to Him. When I think of such places, there are many hillside towns that come to mind. They capture my imagination and soul and serenade me with the welcome music of solitude. One that I often think of is closer home - in my friendly and beautiful neighbourhood - Sri Lanka.

Only 180 km from Colombo and about 70 kms from Kandy, this beautiful town is perched at a height of about 1890m above sea level. Nuwara Eliya waits - a gentle reminder of an era gone by. It takes only 6 hours or so by bus from Colombo to reach Nuwara Eliya. The town is also accessible by train from Colombo and also Kandy.

It is the quintessential hill station of Sri Lanka. April is the peak summer month and the Colombo population seems to move en masse to this town in search of the cooler climes. As the bus rolls and trundles up the mountain path to this very British and colonial town, and the first cool breeze hits your face, you know you have left the hot and humid Sri Lankan capital far behind.

The surroundings are really all about your cup of tea. Literally. Tea gardens abound and the place is reminiscent of a quaint British village you may encounter during your sojourns to the interiors of England.

Nicknamed the 'City of Lights' and 'Little England', Nuwara Eliya has everything from an old brick post office, a country club, sprawling golf course to even a marina with boating facilities. It is easy to see why the British loved it and why it has an appeal that beats all excuses that one may offer in order to lounge by the pool of a Sri Lankan beach resort.

The town has many Tudor style bungalows with gable roofs and well-kept gardens, and rose bushes blooming between moss-covered gravestones. Mostly populated by tea planters, it also has many people who are on their way to Ratnapura, which is the heart of the gem center of Sri Lanka. This is where one can find the famous Ceylon blue sapphire.

When we reached Nuwara Eliya one summer afternoon, thankful for its salubrious climate that reminded me of the 'Thandi Sadak' in Dalhousie, we hunted for a place to stay. There are few choices.

The Hill Club is old and was established in 1876. For some months it opens its doors to non-members and one can stay there. The place is a treat with white-gloved waiters, candles on tables whilst you soak the British tea planter's club atmosphere and wait for dinner that's worth every penny.

Another probable place where one can stay is the Grand Hotel near the golf course. The post office sits bang opposite the bus stand is fully functional even today. It is about 120 years old and has been given a facelift at a considerable cost since it is a major tourist attraction. Its Scottish facade is a cherished landmark in the center of the town photographed by many who visit it.

Around Nuwara the highest plateau in the island beckons one. Horton Plains stretches at a high altitude with grasslands and natural walks - a favorite place for trekkers. The World's End is a point at the southern tip of the Horton Plains. At this point the drop is precipitous and a steep 700-750m.

Staring below is fascinating and at the same time fills one with vertigo. It is also the point to stand and catch the panoramic view of the zig-zag mountain roads with a verdant wide valley where many waterfalls drop their abundant supplies in. The height gives the place its temperature variation too. Mornings can be warm but evenings can be cold with temperatures dipping to sub-zero.

Sri Lanka is the largest producer of tea in the world and the tea gardens around make for a must-see on any tourist's itinerary. Stretching for miles around, the gardens are full of tea pickers that dot the landscape - adding a touch of colour to the verdant green. Each tea plantation comes with its large signpost that declares the ownership and directions to the manager's bungalow in the garden.

Grey metallic buildings, which are the tea factories, are also worth visiting. These are the places which process the tea leaves into the recognizable form that pops out of the carton you throw into your shopping cart. However, the finest tea can be bought here much cheaper than back home. That itself is a good incentive to visit the tea garden if the lush green surroundings are not enough.

It is hard to count all the waterfalls that the region has: Devon falls and Laksapana falls particularly stand out. The Oliphant Estate set up by Lawrence Oliphant is worth a dekko. Here the first 30 tea plants made their way from China and took root in Sri Lanka. Gradually the estate expanded to almost 100 acres.

The Hakgala Botanical gardens are a horticulturist's delight. Lying below the famous Hakgala Peak, these gardens are set at a high elevation of about 6000 feet making them one of the highest botanic gardens in the world. Here 100-year-old Monetary Cypress trees from California, Japanese Cedars, Himalayan Pines and English Oak stand tall
and majestic.

The popularity of Nuwara Eliya in the summer months is understandable. The beauty of the place and the cool climes makes it an ideal summer retreat for people like me...!

Quick facts
Getting there: Colombo is well connected by international airlines and cheap flights are available from Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Chennai, Trichy and Mumbai
Getting Around: No scheduled internal flights but there are buses, trains and hire-cars. Buses for Nuwara Eliya leave Colombo and Kandy hourly. The nearest train station is Nanu Oya.
Staying there: Plenty of charming hotels to suit all budgets

Ways to increase positivity in home

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 29 Juni 2013 | 18.47

Here are some tips from a Vastu and Feng Shui expert for a life full of harmony.

In the present complex scenario, we do not find time for ourselves to analyse the various reasons that lead us to failures in health, wealth or relationships. Most of these problems are connected to major Vastu and Feng Shui defects. Dr Snehal S Deshpande lists some commandments which may help you to increase positive energy in your home:

- Always stand in the centre of your house with a compass in your hand to find out the directions of your house. The main entrance is the mouth of a house which brings in the energy. Avoid a property which has a door facing south-west, as it is the entry of the devil energy and brings in struggle and misfortunes. If your house already has one, fix two Hanumanji tiles outside the door and see the difference.

- Mandir or altar is the king of all Vastu rules — place it in the North-East and everything will start falling in place. Also, face the East while praying.

- Kitchen is the symbol of prosperity and should be ideally placed in the southeast. Kitchen in the North or North-East may bring financial and health problems. In this case, hang three bronze bowls upside down on the ceiling but do not hang over the stove.

- Master bedroom is the key to enter the door of stability and it must be in the South-West. You should sleep with your head in the South or West. But a breadwinner must never sleep in the North-East .

- Bathrooms and toilets have the energy of 'hell' which are best in West or South. But should never be in North and North-East or they bring financial, health and educational problems.

- Centre is the nose of your house from where your house breathes. It must be open and clutter-free. A wall here gives stomach and financial problems so fix a zero watt blue bulb on this wall and keep it on 24x7 .

- Cuts in any direction make a house paralyzed, mainly cuts in South-West, North, North-East and South-East give serious problems. There are many mysteries and secrets regarding the cuts and their cures.

Now, a rapid-fire round of cures
- Never use too much of bright colours such as red and purple for decorating your house or they may enhance sickness energy in the house, if any.

- Do not keep pictures of water or a fountain in your bedroom. It might adversely affect you.

- Do not keep your mandir/temple under any beam or cupboard or you will be always under stress.

- Do not keep heavy objects in the North East and North or it may block your finances.

- Do not keep bonsais in the house or they will hamper the growth in the respective area of your life.

- Mopping the floor twice a week with sea salt water will help you clean your house of negative energy.

- If arguments are the main ruling energy in your house, play a musical CD four-five times in a day and experience the calmness in the house.

Eat less, exercise more, shed kilos

Eating less fat and doing more exercise is the simplest and the straightest way to slimming, says a new study that vindicates a common sense approach to weight loss.

Scientists at Harvard Medical School, Boston surveyed 4,000 obese adults and found those who followed the common sense advice were much more likely to lose weight than those who adopted fad slimming regimes, went on liquid diets or bought costly weight-loss supplements.

Christina Wee, who helped compile the study at Harvard, said: "There are lots of fad diets out there as well as expensive over-the-counter medications that have not necessarily been proven to be effective. So it's very encouraging to find that most of the weight-loss methods associated with success are accessible and inexpensive."

Researchers found 41 per cent of those who cut their fat intake were more likely to have shed five percent of their body weight in under a year than those who went on liquid diets, used non-prescription dieting supplements or followed popular slimming regimes, the American Journal of Preventive Medicine reported.

And if they exercised more than usual, they were almost 30 per cent more likely to lose the weight. Although five percent weight loss may not sound significant, experts say it is enough to delay the onset of diabetes in an obese person, according to the Daily Mail.

And the 'Not Rocket Science' diet helped many volunteers shed more weight, with 37 per cent of those who cut down on fat more likely to lose a tenth of their body weight, while exercising boosted their chances by 6 per cent.

Tips for women travellers in India

Women in India undergo a lot of trouble when they travel alone. Murders, rapes and general eve teasing of women happen on trains and buses especially while travelling alone. In such situations, women need to take extra care and be a little aware of things around them.

"Akeli ladki khuli hui tijori ki tharah hoti hain..."Sounds familiar? Geet of Jab We Met probably found a cute depressed man on a train and managed to survive the adventurous journey unscathed. Unless, you have the cute man do not follow that! Every country and culture has its own views of what is appropriate behaviour for women, and the reaction to violations of those standards can range from quiet disapproval to criminal charges and punishment. Travelling in India can be a herculean task. You cannot escape the wandering eyes of some men who get some kind of a sadistic kick out of ogling at women. We live in a country where social conservatism is still very much prevalent. And because of this social conservatism, it is important that women educate themselves of how to handle themselves in public.

Here are a few tips on how not to be a cultural faux pas!

Watch what you wear
Much of the attention that you draw is a result of what you are wearing. Try to avoid wearing tight clothes and short skirts as this will attract a lot of unwanted attention from others. Stick to wearing a salwar with a dupatta/shawl. You can wear jeans and kurta too but carry a shawl with you always.

Do not indulge in conversation with strangers
You love to socialize. Yes, we understand that. But don't do it when you are travelling alone. Keep to yourself and try not to make a conversation with others. If someone does manage to pester you and get into a conversation, keep it minimal and do not let out any personal information.

Keep an eye on your belongings
Be close to your belongings. Don't let your luggage out of sight. Always have an eye on them. This is India! Things disappear before you manage a "Namaste". You need to be vigilant at all times.

Love your wallet
Keep your wallet close to you at all times. Also, place money in different parts like your back pocket or the sides of your bag. In case of an unfortunate incident, you will have some money to get out of the situation.

Be confident
If you are a first time traveller, be confident. Do not give away that you are travelling for the first time. Act like you know what you are doing and where you are going at all times. Keep your head high and voice firm.

Do not borrow anything from anyone
Do not accept anything that is given by a stranger. If the person offers you biscuits or fruits, politely decline and retreat to your seat. If you have watched the railway ads that constantly run at the stations, you will know what I mean.

Do not be alone
When you feel you are in one corner of the train/bus with a man, go to an area where there are women around. If you are uncomfortable with the person sitting next to you, request for a seat change or negotiate with other passengers.

Travel light
Do not carry lots of luggage. You will need to handle these things alone. So make sure you travel light, probably with a backpack and one trolley bag. Do not carry a lot of jewellery and cash.

How to budget your travel expenses

If you plan properly, you will be able to get to your favourite destination and that too within your budget.

People normally feel they can't afford a vacation just by looking up the internet and seeing the high cost of airfares and hotel tariffs. But the good news is, if you plan properly, you will be able to get to your favourite destination and that too within your budget. Here's how to go about it...

1. Book your air tickets about 6-8 weeks in advance. Tickets are cheaper if you book a round trip. The airlines give a " discount" to round trip tickets.

2. Avoid travelling on weekends since this is when people tend to travel the most and airlines raise their prices too. The best time to fly is between Tuesday and Thursday when flights are at the cheapest.

3. A good alternative to hotels is staying in hostels. They are for all ages and not only for students. Hostels also provide private rooms.

4. If you are looking to pay nothing, consider using couch surfing. It connects travellers with people around the world who let them stay in their home. The couch surfing websites take steps to provide security for their users. They provide various levels of verification and allow users to rate and leave comments on people's profiles.

5. If you are planning on staying in a city for a long time, renting out an apartment is the best option. These furnished apartments are usually cheaper than hotels and give many more amenities like a kitchen, laundry, and TV room.

When and how spine function improves

A new research has found that human foetal stem cell grafts improve both motor and sensory functions in rats suffering from a spinal cord injury.

This cell replacement therapy also improves the structural integrity of the spine, providing a functional relay through the injury site.

The research gives hope for the treatment of spinal cord injuries in humans.

Grafting human neural stem cells into the spine is a promising approach to promote the recovery of function after spinal injury.

Sebastian van Gorp, from the University of California San Diego, and team`s work looks specifically at the effect of intraspinal grafting of human foetal spinal cord-derived neural stem cells on the recovery of neurological function in rats with acute lumbar compression injuries.

A total of 42 three month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats, with spinal compression injuries, were allocated to one of three groups. The rats in the first group received a spinal injection with the stem cells, those in the second group received a placebo injection, while those in the third group received no injection.

Treatment effectiveness was assessed by a combination of measures, including motor and sensory function tests, presence of muscle spasticity and rigidity that causes stiffness and limits residual movement. The team also evaluated of how well the grafted cells had integrated into the rodents` spines.

Gorp and colleagues found that, compared to rats who received either the placebo injection or no injection, those who received the stem cell grafts showed a progressive and significant improvement in gait/paw placement, reduced muscle spasticity as well as improved sensitivity to both mechanical and thermal stimuli. In addition to these behavioural benefits, the researchers observed long-term improvements in the structural integrity of previously injured spinal cord segments.

"Importantly, spinal cavity formation and muscle spasticity are frequently observed in human patients with high-speed, high-impact induced spinal cord injuries. Our findings demonstrate that human foetal spinal cord-derived neural stem cells, with an already established favorable clinical safety profile, represent a potential cell candidate for cell replacement therapy in patients with traumatic spinal injuries," the researchers added.

The research was published this week in BioMed Central's open access journal Stem Cell Research and Therapy.

A revealing story on Kashmir

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Juni 2013 | 18.47

Title: Our Moon has Blood Clots

Author: Rahul Pandita
Publisher: Random House India
Pages: 258
Price: Rs.499

Only one who has undergone pain and witnessed it first hand could have written this moving account of how the Kashmir Valley forced the Pandits to flee -- and then sowed the seeds of fiction that Governor Jagmohan authored the exodus so that he could 'take care' of the Muslims.

And since in secular India it is a political sin to say anything negative about Muslims and Islam, the fiction gained currency. Even the Indian media was largely apathetic to the suffering of the Pandits. The Indian state would be accused of brutalising the Valley's Muslim people but what was ignored was "that the same people also victimised another people".

This is the story that Rahul Pandita, born in Kashmir Valley and forced to quit Srinagar during the troubled 1990s, exposes with an evident sincerity, with a tortured heart but one which hasn't bid goodbye to human values. Unlike many from his community, he has no hatred for Kashmiri Muslims, not even to those who grabbed his ancestral house (after it had been ravaged by Islamists) and quietly made it their own.

This is a powerful story, one that can't be ignored even as the Pakistan-backed separatist movement rages on, turning large parts of what was once a Sufi land into an Islamist hub. This is as much a personal account as it is a surgery of the politics of hatred whose face is the drive for the so-called 'azadi'.

Unlike those who would want to sweep the ugly truth under a (Kashmiri) carpet, Rahul is not shy; he tells you how ordinary Kashmir Muslims too, at times, assisted thugs mouthing 'azadi' slogans to kill fellow Kashmiris in cold blood, only because they belonged to another religion.

The author and his family, like innumerable Pandits, were forced to live as refugees in Jammu before finally settling down in Delhi, changing houses as many as 22 times. "I have reduced my life to names and numbers, I have memorised the names of every Pandit killed during those dark days, and the circumstances in which he or she was killed. I have memorised the number of people killed in each district."

If you need to understand the Kashmir story, this book cannot be ignored. It is powerful, painful and revealing.

Fight sleep disorders: 20 foods for good sleep

If sleep disorders are troubling you, then the trick might lie in certain foods for better sleep.

After a day's work, travelling and crazy sessions at work, all one wants is nothing but a good night's sleep. Everybody wants to be able to sleep like a baby every time they hit the bed. But for many of us patting ourselves to sleep is a Herculean task. Today, we give you the solution to better sleep. No... we aren't giving you names of soothing lullabies but a list of foods that will help you discover your inner Sleeping Beauty! Here are the 20 best foods that will help you fight sleep disorders and get better sleep every night...

Food for sleep: Legumes

The high levels of B vitamins in legumes, such as black-eyed peas and lentils, also help calm your nervous system. Legumes can be a great choice for an evening meal because they often replace animal protein, which can cause sleep problems, eat them only in moderation.

Food for sleep: Warm milk

Milk has some tryptophan, an amino acid that has a sedative-like effect, and calcium, which helps the brain use tryptophan.

Food for sleep: Honey

Drizzle a little in your warm milk or herb tea. Lots of sugar is stimulating, but a little glucose tells your brain to turn off orexin, a recently discovered neurotransmitter that's linked to alertness.

Food for sleep: Cherries

Cherries boost the body's supply of melatonin, and they're packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients, that help you get a good night's sleep.

Food for sleep: Popcorn

Popcorn helps create the sleep-inducing neurotransmitter serotonin in our brains; it can be helpful in falling asleep. But skip the butter and oil; air-popped is best.

Food for sleep: Almonds

Almonds contain magnesium, which promotes both sleep and muscle relaxation. They help promote sleep by switching you from your alert adrenaline cycle to your rest-and-digest cycle

Food for sleep: Bread

As a high-glycemic food, bread can definitely help you feel sleepy, especially if you eat it within four hours of going to bed. But avoid it if you're trying to stay slim; it'll pack a rise in blood sugar that could cause weight gain.

Food for sleep: Flaxseeds

Try sprinkling 2 tablespoons of these healthy little seeds on your bedtime oatmeal. They're rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a natural mood lifter.

Food for sleep: Bananas

Packed with healthy carbohydrates, bananas can help you slow down a little bit. They, too, contain tryptophan, as well as substances that promote the production of melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep and muscle relaxation.

Food for sleep: Yogurt

Same as milk, but with more protein to boot, so it's a satisfying snack before bed. Just choose a sugar-free, low-fat variety to avoid weight gain or increase in blood sugar levels.

Food for sleep: Chickpeas

Protein and serotonin-boosting vitamin B6 make chickpeas a great choice for a relaxing late-night snack. Keep some chickpea salad in the fridge.

Food for sleep: Green tea

Drinking green tea throughout the day can help you feel more calm. It may also help relieve the symptoms of sleep apnea.

Food for sleep: Oatmeal

It's rich in calcium and magnesium, and the perfect partner for some bananas, milk and honey, making oatmeal a great choice for night-time breakfasts.

Food for sleep: Cereal

Choose a low-sugar fortified cereal as another great late-night snack that will help you drift off to sleep. The complex carbohydrates in many cereals can increase the availability of tryptophan in the bloodstream, and fortified cereals are often a great source of vitamin B6.

Food for sleep: Potatoes

The carbohydrates in potatoes make them another high-glycemic food that can help you sleep more peacefully. Try a small serving of mashed potatoes with milk, topped with a dollop of plain Greek yogurt.

Food for sleep: Dark Chocolate

It can help you sleep better, too. Compounds in dark chocolate have been found to reduce the production of the hormone cortisol in the brain. Eat it throughout the day to help you feel more relaxed, not right before you go to bed, since it does contain a little bit of caffeine.

Food for sleep: Saffron

It has a "mood-improving effect" that could aid in weight loss and help you relax.

Food for sleep: Soups and stews

Soups and stews-particularly those filled with fiber-rich veggies and legumes-and low-fat casseroles are much more calming and relaxing than seared meats and hot, spicy foods.

Food for sleep: Eggs

High in proteins, eggs help improve your sleep and maintain your fitness levels thereby giving you complete protection. However, in case you suffer from high cholesterol issues, you can opt for eating only the egg white without the yolk.

Eating Goan frog legs cause cancer

Smoking cigarettes is not the only way to contract cancer. If one believes the Goa Forest Department, eating frog meat can also get you a date with cancer.

Around this time of the year poachers, with a torch in one hand and a bag in the other, slosh around marshy fields and open areas sodden with rain, hunting for frogs and their meaty hind legs. However, forest officials have issued an advisory which claims that eating frog meat could lead to an exotic cocktail of illnesses, ranging from cancer to kidney failure to paralytic strokes.

The advisory calls humans the "greatest predator" of frogs and their indiscriminate killing is drastically reducing the amphibians' population.

"Massive toxic recalcitrant residues from agrochemicals biomagnified in the food chain get accumulated in fat deposits of frogs. Continuous consumption of frogs could trigger paralytic strokes, cancers, kidney failures and other deformities," the advisory reads.

Over the years, the Indian Bullfrog and the Jerdon's Bullfrog have been colloquially re-christened 'Jumping Chicken' in Goa. Both species have been hunted for their meat, which although contraband, is cooked and sold on the sly and eaten in several restaurants and homes.

A single frog is sold for up to Rs.250 and only its meaty hind legs are cooked and eaten.

Listed in Schedule-I of threatened species, which also include the tiger, the croaking of the humble frog once the monsoon begins would ordinarily help attract its female mate. But in Goa, with the passion and demand for frog meat increasing, the mating call also attracts village boys and adults, who almost ritualistically head for frog hunts every year, risking a stringent punishment of a Rs.25,000 fine and/or imprisonment up to three years under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Needless to say, although awareness about the importance of the frog for the region's ecological balance has increased, arrests and deterrents have failed to stop eager 'froggers'.

The forest department now feels that if not the fear of a fine or arrest, at least a cancer cautionary could stop people from killing and eating frogs.

"It is a health hazard in a way because the frogs exist in the fields and their bodies accept agrochemicals which are used liberally in fields. These are cancerous elements. We are hoping that people will take note of it," a wildlife official said.

Miguel Braganza of the Botanical Society of Goa says that the warning might just be a deterrent.

"Health risks may have been amplified to deter people from eating frogs because punitive action just does not seem to work," Braganza said.

Animal conservationists like Clinton Vaz have been at the forefront of the Save the Frog campaign for years now. He says that along with the Indian Bullfrog and the Jerdon Bullfrog species, the Indian Pond Frog, Grass Frog and the Common Indian Toad are also occasionally poached.

"An insatiable demand at restaurants for illegal frog meat has ensured a lucrative return to the poacher for a pair of frog legs," Vaz claims.

How to take care of your new tattoo

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Juni 2013 | 18.48

So you've got a tattoo and don't know how to take care of it? A lot of people make the same mistake.

Researching precautionary measures and ways of taking care of tattoos is a good idea as there are chances of getting rashes, among other problems. Here are few tips to take care of your tattoo:

Have a talk with your tattoo artist about the pros and cons of the procedure before getting inked. Some of the inks used allow you to use water on the tattoo within 24 hours, while for others you might have to wait longer. Get these technicalities addressed beforehand.

A lot of tattoo artists advise using an antiseptic ointment till the tattoo heals completely. Choose the right one after consulting the artist and use it for better healing.

Keep the tattoo away from sunlight after it's been newly inked. If you have to go outdoors, use a soft cloth like a scarf to cover it. Don't use a sunscreen as chances of the tattoo reacting to it are high.

Avoid scratching the tattoo as chances are high of the skin peeling off, which might trigger an allergic reaction.

Take quick and short showers during the healing process. Since you can't expose your tattoo for long periods of time, going swimming during this time is a nono.

If your tattoo in an area — like your arms or legs — where you might need to remove hair, avoid doing it unless completely healed.

Keep the tattoo covered between two to 24 hours to avoid contracting an infection from air-borne bacteria. Use a bandage if required.

Book review: Yours Sarcastically

Book title: Yours Sarcastically

Author: Sandeep Das

Publisher: Leadstart Publishing Pvt. Ltd.

Price: Rs 145

There is nary a dull moment in the imaginatively conceived narrative in Sandeep Das's debut novel 'Yours Sarcastically'. Written in a journal format, it chronicles the happenings in the life of a few management students and has all the ingredients, from campus capers and rivalries, jilted love affairs and meet-the-parents, betrayals and befriending, recession and recruitments to meetings and mentoring that make for an engaging and fast-paced read. Thankfully, the author, an IIM graduate himself, has pretty much laid it out as it is, giving us an insider's view of everything, and, therefore, coming across a credible read.

So while presentations and pitches and fighting for top honours feature prominently, there's enough human interest action on the side to keep us riveted and engrossed. Does Nikhil finally get Neha, the batch mate he's completely sold on, or was their apparent closeness only a matter of academic expediency? What happens when a couple of hot blooded graduates want to check out whorehouses in Mumbai? How and why do clients shell out crore to management consulting firms, and what does glib and jargon-laden talking have to do with wining clients' approval? Das pays attention to detail and has the propensity to make the raunchy and bawdy bits sound very matter of fact and knows just how to sex up the matter-of-fact corporate and organizational goings-on to keep the reader hooked. The characters are well etched out and come with their own set of quirks, idiosyncrasies, and complexes. The market survey entailing interviews with size zero women in Mumbai is a hoot, equally insightful as it is hilarious.

If author Chetan Bhagat can be thanked for anything - and no, certainly not for the books he has spun out - it is for giving so many closet and first-time writers like Das the courage and motivation to tell their own stories. Bhagat has shown them that there is nothing as credible like telling your own story, warts and all. Das has managed to tell his story with humour, honesty and eloquence. That is not to say that the book is without its flaws. The editing ought to have been far tighter and the narrative could have been trimmed without taking anything away.

Importance of email etiquette

At a time when we expect instant answers and responses, email interactions constitute a major part of our communication, both personal and professional.

Email, once considered a casual form of communication, is now one of the most preferred forms of corporate communication. Here are few corporate email etiquettes that one must practice:

Keep it short and crisp
When writing an official email, make sure it is short, crisp and to the point. Most working professionals receive a number of emails every day. An organised, clean email will help one understand, organise and respond soon. "If a message can be conveyed in one sentence, there is no point beating around the bush. Stick to the information relevant and leave the rest behind. Besides, writing a crisp, formal email will help you build a good impression," says Simran Jain, an accountant by profession.

Avoid heavy attachments
Most official email accounts have limited storage space. Besides, heavy emails often bounce back or are marked as spam. Hence, one must avoid attaching heavy files and documents in an official email unless absolutely necessary. In case the file must be attached, zipping the file may help. Alternately, ask the recipient for an alternate email id. Manju Bulchandani, an HR professional says, "On an average, corporate professionals exchange over 15-25 emails in a day. Most of these come with very heavy attachments. Hence, we get a lot of complaints of email accounts being jammed. The best way to pass on heavy files is through an alternate email id."

Subject line matters
The subject line of an email is most important. For your email to be read and marked by the receiver, the subject line must be catchy. However, this does not mean that the subject line is misleading. For example, if the email is about a new project offer, the subject line must be self explanatory. Refrain from using long subject lines, since it doesn't catch the reader's attention easily.

Don't email when you are angry
When angry, we often tend to express things that we later regret. In turn, when angry, the tone of our email is aggressive. One must understand that the reader could perceive what you have written in different ways. So, there could be a time when the email appears more aggressive than it actually was. Make sure you are in a pleasant state of mind when replying to a challenging email. You could save the email as draft and read it again in a couple of hours. Chances are that you delete the entire email typed or tone it down drastically.

Acknowledge emails
One of the most important email etiquette is to acknowledge. An acknowledgement need not be long, even a sentence as an acknowledgement is well received. It helps maintain the organisations goodwill. In case you plan to respond to the issues mentioned in the email in detail, make sure you start a message with a polite greeting.

Don't use capital letters
One of the biggest email goof ups is using capital letters. Whether done intentionally or by mistake, writing an email in capital portrays a very harsh tone of communication. Even though the reply is not intended to sound harsh, an email typed in all caps appears angry and rude. Further, it also maligns the recipient's impression of you. The use of all bold characters must also be avoided.

Font and colour
Fancy font and multiple colors is something that a business email must sparingly have. It makes the email appear casual. While colors are sparingly used to highlight important facts, one must be careful about the colour being used. "The ideal font for an email is Sans Serif or Times New Roman with 12 as font size. One must avoid using red and orange to highlight a specific message in an email. Both these colours make the email appear aggressive. Instead, the focus must be on using shades of blue, green, or grey. The most important thing to keep in mind when using colours is the combination. An email with more than two colours can hurt the readers eye. Important points could also be pointed put by italicizing it," explains Bulchandani.

Proofread your mail
Last, but not the least, re-read your email before you send it. Chances are that you may have misspelt a word or may have missed an important point. For those working in the field of public relation, or corporate communication, typos are big no-no! Emails with constant and multiple typos and grammatical errors will do harm to your professional reputation.

Pick the right container for your plants

Whether you live in a tiny apartment or on a large bungalow, gardening in containers is a way to add colour and the beauty of nature to your surroundings.

The three main elements of creating successful containers gardens are:

1. Choosing the pots
2. Getting the right planting medium
3. Selecting the plants

In all of these elements, the key is to create a healthy growing environment for the plant roots. For a healthy root system, water must be able to pass quickly through the soil. As the water drains out, air replaces it in the soil and an exchange of carbon dioxide is made with the plant roots. This movement of water and air is essential to a healthy plant.

Here are some tips to help you choose from the dizzying array of pots, troughs and boxes:

Location
Pick the spot for your garden first and then find a container to suit it. For example, a quaint wooden trough would not suit a modern balcony, nor would classic urn shaped pots be the best choice for an informal garden. In addition to style considerations, give attention to size and proportion issues.

Weight
Consider the weight of the container — not only empty, but filled with wet soil and plants. If there is a strong prevailing breeze across your outdoor space, the container must be heavy enough to prevent it from tipping over. On the other hand, the structure on which the containers are placed must be able to support them.

Materials
Clay/terracotta pots
are attractive and complement a wide range of foliage and flowering plants. They are the traditional potting container because, in addition to draining well, they wick moisture through their sides. This provides a drier root environment, which means less opportunity for root diseases. However, it also means more frequent watering is needed. If you tend to underwater, use terra cotta pots for only drought tolerant plants, or choose another type of container.

On the down side, clay pots can be heavy and must be protected in colder climates during the winter to prevent cracking. A glazed clay container is non-porous, creating a moisture barrier. Because this will not allow the root system to breathe, glazed pots are best used with a regular terracotta pot inside of them.

Plastic pots are inexpensive, lightweight and functional, and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colours. If you don't like the look of plastic, apply a faux finish to fool the eye, or slip the plastic pots inside other containers. With the proper soil mix and attentive watering, plants do well in plastic pots. If you tend to underwater your plants, plastic is a better choice than terra-cotta for you. However, plastic containers may need to be weighted down to stay in place on windy days.

Wood containers look good in naturalistic environments, and most plants do well in them. Wood drains better than plastic but does not have the wicking advantage of clay, and wood containers can be heavy when planted. Choose containers made of hardwood, such as redwood, cedar or cypress, which are less susceptible to rot over time. Lining wood containers with heavy-duty plastic bags will give you added protection from moisture, but you must remember to provide proper drainage.

Metal containers can be used successfully in many modern settings. Galvanised containers are the best for planting — they won't leach rust or chemicals into the soil. Unless the container was designed as a planter, you'll need to add drainage holes to the bottom of the pot, or slip other pots inside it.

Quaint Accents
Found items can add variety and whimsy to your container garden. If you're going to plant directly in such items as watering cans, old boots, teapots or wheelbarrows consider drainage and air movement around the roots of the plants. Now that you chosen the perfect containers, you need to select the planting medium and the plants. Go fill your world with beautiful plants!

Chocolates can be harmful for pets

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 25 Juni 2013 | 18.47

A Kansas State University veterinarian has said that chocolate consumption by many pets, including dogs, cats, ferrets, birds and rats, can be extremely hazardous.

Susan Nelson, assistant professor of clinical services, says that the ingredients contained in the sugary sweet can be very harmful for pets.

"Chocolate contains large amounts of methylxanthines. Theobromine and caffeine are methylxanthines that are found in chocolate. It is theobromine that causes the majority of symptoms in pets," she said.

When a pet ingests a small quantity of chocolate, an owner may notice no changes, or they could see such symptoms as vomiting, diarrhoea and excessive thirst and urination.

As the consumption of chocolate increases, Nelson said the symptoms become more severe and could lead to irregular heartbeats, tremors, seizures and possibly death.

"Symptoms typically occur within 12 hours of ingestion. Unlike people, dogs take much longer to clear theobromine from their bodies, which leads to the formation of toxic levels," she stated.

According to Nelson, different types of chocolate can vary in the concentration level of theobromine.

Baking chocolate contains the most theobromine, white chocolate contains the least, and semisweet and milk chocolate contain a medium amount.

If a household pet consumes a large quantity of chocolate Nelson advises owners to call a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately.

Inducing vomiting will most likely be advised, but she said this measure is not safe in all situations.

"Chocolate consumption is a very common problem amongst pets, dogs especially," Nelson said.

"It is important to recognize that individual reactions vary by pets, but it is best to assume your pet is one of the sensitive ones and not delay in seeking advice from your veterinarian.

Be aware of the chocolate sources in your house, and tell any new dog owner about this potential threat to their pet," she added.

The budget canteen is a hit with Trichyites

The massive success of the Amma budget canteens in various localities in Chennai has paved way for more such canteens across the state. It arrived in the junction region of Trichy last week, to fantastic response.

The basic premise of the budget canteen is to get extremely affordable but high quality of food that isn't really characteristic of its price. But the catch is, it has been well received by people of all class. And the Rs. 1 idlies, and Rs.5 sambar rice already are selling like hot cakes. Open from 7 to 10 am for breakfast and 12 to 3 pm for lunch, it is fast becoming a must-visit place for Trichyites.

"I was really waiting for the canteens as I had heard a lot of good things about the Chennai ones. So the moment, the Rockins Road branch was opened, we students rushed off to taste it. And I must say, I was mighty impressed," says Dinesh, a student of a Cantonnment-based college.

More appreciation has been pouring in for the cleanliness maintained in the spots as well. "I initially feared that like, most government operated bodies, the budget canteens would shut down due to mismanagement, but so far I am impressed by the neatness and how well the crowd is managed," says Sumathi, from Srirangam. The budget canteens will open in 11 locations across the city — including Jan Bazaar, Kuppankulam, Rockins Road, Puthur Overhead Water Tank, Anna Nagar Overhead Water Tank, Jaganathapuram, Viragupettai, Melkalkandaar Kottai, and Salai Road, Woraiyur — and all of these will be managed by the Trichy City Corporation.

Carrying on after a miscarriage

When 27-year-old Mansi Nath (name changed) suffered a miscarriage, she felt that her world had come crashing down.

Not only was it unexpected — the doctors had said hers was a perfect pregnancy — but she also blamed herself for the loss of her child.

Gynaecologist Dr Suman Bijlani says there are several reasons for a miscarriage. "The commonest reason is nature's selection. It is believed that 75% of pregnancies end in miscarriages. But most go unrecognised. They happen so early that it looks like normal menstruation, though slightly delayed. Only about 15 to 20% miscarriages are clinically recognised." she says.

Genetic factor
These account for about 50% of all clinically recognised early miscarriages. Here, the fetus is genetically or chromosomally defective. A vast majority of women end up having a normal pregnancy the next time. Occasionally, one parent may carry structurally abnormal genetic material, which may result in an abnormal offspring. Couples who suffer repeated miscarriages can opt for genetic testing of the fetus.

Antibodies a threat
Some women have antibodies in their blood, which may attack their own cells. Some of these antibodies may attack the placenta or lead to formation of clots in the blood that is supplied to the foetus. This may cause slower fetal growth and eventual miscarriage. Auto-antibodies usually cause fetal loss towards the third month of pregnancy or later.

Anatomic causes
Some women may have, from birth, a septum (wall) in the uterus. Some may have a 'double' or 'half' uterine cavity. Miscarriage may result from that, though it is not necessary. Very large fibroids, especially those which encroach upon the uterine cavity, may also hamper a successful pregnancy outcome. Sometimes, the cervix (the mouth of the uterus) opens in the second trimester, causing miscarriage.

Beware of infections
- Many bacteria, viruses and other parasites have been seen causing pregnancy loss.
endocrine causes
- Early pregnancy is an interplay of multiple hormones, which work in balance to provide an ideal environment for the developing embryo. Some women with menstrual disturbances and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome may have a higher risk of early pregnancy loss. Women with uncontrolled diabetes and thyroid disorders are also at a higher risk.
environment plays a part
- Women need to be careful during the first trimester, because what she consumes orally or through her lungs may reach her unborn baby who is at a crucial stage of growth. Certain drugs, alcohol, smoking, excessive caffeine intake and stress may harm the fetus. Pregnant women should not undergo X-ray or CT scan, unless recommended by the doctor.

"A miscarriage is relatively common and difficult to prevent. Though the risk is higher in women with a history of more than one miscarriage, they can still conceive. With proper prenatal care, avoiding risk factors — smoking and drinking alcohol — and understanding what causes a miscarriage, you can plan your pregnancy under a doctor's supervision.

Experts recommend waiting for at least one menstrual cycle — after a miscarriage — before trying to conceive. Make sure you and your partner are physically and emotionally fit before you plan a baby," says health consultant Parul Sheth.

Coping mechanisms
Every woman's ability to cope with a stressful situation differs. "Women need to give themselves time and space to grieve. She may decide to take time off from work, involve herself in prayer or spiritual practices, revive an old hobby, or take up a new one. Her family needs to make her feel that they are with her. Most partners support each other and usually, a miscarriage brings them closer. But some women may perceive their husbands as 'cold'. Sometimes, a man may also feel that his wife is taking too long to get over the grief. This may strain the relationship," says Dr Bijlani.

"In most cases, physical recovery takes only a few hours to a couple of days. Emotional healing takes longer. Losing a baby can be heart-wrenching. You may feel angry, sad and depressed. Give yourself time to get over it," says Sheth.

Know more...
- Uncontrolled diabetes, infections, hormonal imbalance and problems related to cervix or uterus can lead to miscarriage.
- A woman who has suffered one miscarriage has a 15% chance of suffering another one.
- After two losses, the risk rises to 30 per cent. After three miscarriages, it may rise up to 45%.
- Healthcare professionals play an important role in the coping process. Doctors should answer couples' queries sensitively and provide all relevant information.
- A woman might experience fatigue, loss of interest in everything, body ache, lack of sleep or excess sleep, loss of appetite, mood swings and depression after miscarriage.

Kidney problems: Ways to keep your kidney healthy

We've all heard tales of excruciating kidney stones or a painful kidney or bladder infection, which if left untreated, can turn into sepsis that pervades the body and cause substantial harm.

Often, we don't pay much attention to kidney health until there is a problem. "Prevention is better than cure", and prevention lies in including a few management tips in your health routine which Dr. Vandana Mathur, PhD (Nutrition), Consulting Nutritionist, Metropolis Healthcare Limited explains to us in detail.

Ways to keep your kidney healthy

Limit the work load on the kidney
You can do this by making certain changes in the diet to lower the presence of harmful toxins. This ensures that the kidney eliminates the harmful, waste ingredients from the blood as well as expels it out from the body through urination. In the course of your day, the entire blood in the body gets strained more than 20-25 times. For this reason, it's crucial that you decrease the amount of work on the kidney.

Ways to keep your kidney healthy

Drink plenty of fluids
Do you wonder why is it essential to have 8-10 glasses of water per day? Imagine a reservoir with low water levels. It may look dry, dusty, or shallow, with many objects bobbing on the surface that otherwise might be carried off downstream. This grim image is a picture of your bloodstream and kidneys when you don't drink enough fluids. Although the kidneys act as more of a filter than a reservoir, toxins can build up if there isn't enough water pressure to push them through to the urinary tract for excretion.

Ways to keep your kidney healthy

Eat cleansing foods
Fruits and vegetables help the kidneys remove excess acid from the body and excrete it in urine. Foods that contain antioxidants can help prevent damage to cells caused by free-radicals in the body. Egg whites provide protein, addition to being the highest quality of protein with all the essential amino acids with less phosphorus than other protein sources such as egg yolk or meats.

Cabbage
High in vitamin K, vitamin C and fiber, cabbage is also a good source of vitamin B6 and folic acid. Low in potassium and low in cost, it's an affordable addition to the kidney diet.

Ways to keep your kidney healthy

Eat cleansing foods
Red bell peppers are low in potassium and this tasty vegetable is also an excellent source of lycopene, vitamin C and vitamin A, as well as vitamin B6, folic acid and fiber.

Grapes are an excellent choice for detoxifying the kidneys as they help to flush out excess uric acid from the system.

Cranberries contain an essential nutrient and antioxidant called proanthocyanidin. They are also rich in quinine, which converts to a substance called hippuric acid that helps to eliminate toxins from the body.

Ways to keep your kidney healthy

Magnesium intake
Due to high blood pressure and toxic overload when magnesium is deficient, kidney function can be largely affected. To ensure that your body is getting enough magnesium, which keeps the kidneys functioning well, make sure you eat as many dark green vegetables, seeds, nuts and whole grains.

Ways to keep your kidney healthy

Cut the sodium, salt and protein
The body spends a lot of energy eliminating unnecessary things like excess protein, salt and even water. The kidneys being the body's filter for removing waste will have to work harder if any of these are consumed in excess. Sodium is essential in maintaining fluid balance, but if it is consumed in excess and then not properly filtered out in someone with a kidney disease, it can cause high blood pressure and may lead to heart attack and stroke.

Kidney malfunction may also occur if it has to handle excess protein (more than 1 gm. / kg of body weight), as they have to work harder to remove the blood urea nitrogen from the body. Drinking too much water when it's not needed also puts extra stress on kidneys and can lead to renal damage.

Ways to keep your kidney healthy

Calcium mineral supplements
The kidney performs a crucial role in calcium supplement supply in the body. Up on reduced calcium intake, a hormone is actually released. This hormone in conjunction with vitamin D encourages release of calcium through bones which is soaked up from the intestine.

However though, kidney is actually actively involved in staying away from osteoporosis, excess calcium supplement in kidney stones. As a result it is essential to have an organic diet that is full of calcium and to steer clear of supplements unless informed to do so by a competent ph.

How to jumpstart your day

Getting up early in the morning is a Herculean task in winters. Here are a few tips on how to be on time for a meeting or an appointment.
Instead of going to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee or tea, go to the bathroom and splash water on your face.
Don't keep your alarm clock near your bed. Keep it at a distance, so that you actually have to get out of your bed and go switch it off.
Try to step outside for sometime. When the air hits your face, you feel refreshed.
Try to plan your day in advance. Make a list of the things you intend to do.
It's better that you don't start your day by looking at your computer screen or your smartphone. This puts undue stress on your brain.

Is romance really age related?

Written By Unknown on Senin, 24 Juni 2013 | 18.47

When it comes to wooing a lady, older men are said to score over the younger ones

According to a recent survey, men — like fine wine and cheese — just get better with age. The survey claims that at 53, men become more romantic and are more likely to surprise their partners with romantic symbols such as roses, champagne and poetry.

Many experts, however, dispute this. Romance, they say, is all in the mind and has really nothing to do with age. Claiming that it's all about eagerness, some experts opine that if a man really likes someone, he will be more than eager to indulge her with romantic gestures, no matter how old or how young he is.

They reason that younger men are less likely to go in for romantic gestures is because they could just go wrong. Experts reason that older men may have tried and tested formulae, which younger men are yet to master. Hence, they add, if a young woman feels that the men she is dating are rubbish at romance, maybe she should go out with an older man and figure out if they are really better at this game.

One can't really put an age on romance. It's a different story every time. It all depends onthe situation that prevails — and of course, the couple. Romance can happen to anyone and more importantly, at any time — it's just the moment when it arrives. The best advice experts give is to be spontaneous.

Travelling alone? Keep these in mind

The little things you need to remember if you are planning to hit the road without your guy.

Get yourself a good guide
Start with buying yourself a guidebook of the place you might be visiting. It is wise to do your home work if you are hitting an unknown destination. These guide books usually give you an in-depth knowledge about places to visit, accommodation, travel routes and weather details.

Book your bed
To find yourself accommodation at an unknown destination can be risky. So better book your accommodation before hand, unless you want to be left stranded.

Word of caution
Where ever you might be, a and no matter what, a woman always draws attention. And if you are not from that place, you will stand out if not appropriately dressed. So never be dressed to be noticed while going to a new place. If you are being followed or are facing any such thing, it is better to move into a crowded public place or get into a hotel or restaurant where you can tell the people about your problem. It always helps!

Talk and smile
A warm gesture like a smile has never done any harm to anyone. When at a new place you have no one, you can join in with a family and start a conversation. Such spontaneous interactions are always memorable. If language is a barrier, you can try and communicate with signs. In return you might just get to know their lexicon.

Romantic destination? NO!

Since you are travelling alone and do not have your boyfriend or husband or for that matter your girl gang, popular romantic destinations should be a big no. You will always feel put of place seeing couple holding hands or getting cosy. You have come to have a good time, not to sulk!

Food
Since you have come on a holiday, you cannot miss a chance to taste the local cuisine and try out something new. It is always exciting to eat and drink something never tried before. And yes, don't get drunk! And just in case you do not want to take a chance with your stomach, you can stick on to your regular diet and have a blast!

Power up your benchpress

Some key tips for one of the most important workouts in weight-training

It's easy to stay with the routine you are comfortable with. But ask yourself this question: "Am I really training out of my comfort zone?"

Most people are not. Yes, they train hard but they're not pushing themselves as hard as they are capable of. So switch your workout up, vary the intensity. Vary the rest between sets. Do supersets. Additionally, start thinking about "less is more". The quality of your reps, sets and exercises is more important than how many you do. Stick to training your chest once or twice a week.

Getting a good night's sleep cannot be stressed upon more. It is part of the basics of building muscle. Your muscles repair and grow while you're sleeping and resting, so getting enough rest and sleep is essential for muscle growth. Get at least eight hours sleep and plenty of rest between workouts.

Also, pay attention to form and the 'negative' part of each exercise. If you don't know what a negative is, it's the lowering phase of an exercise. In the case of the bench press, it's when you lower the weight to your chest. Negative training is highly underestimated and can have a dramatic effect on your upper body strength.

Lastly, eat well. Each meal should contain a good serving a protein (in various forms) and complex carbohydrates. This is essential for increasing your bench press. If you're not eating enough calories per day, don't expect and additional pounds on your bench.

Blood vessels in eye linked with IQ

The width of blood vessels in the retina can be a biomarker for brain health, a new study has suggested.

Research shows that younger people who score low on intelligence tests, such as IQ, tend to be at higher risk for poorer health and shorter lifespan, but factors like socioeconomic status and health behaviors don't fully account for the relationship

Psychological scientist Idan Shalev of Duke University and colleagues wondered whether intelligence might serve as a marker indicating the health of the brain, and specifically the health of the system of blood vessels that provides oxygen and nutrients to the brain.

To investigate the potential link between intelligence and brain health, the researchers borrowed a technology from a somewhat unexpected domain: ophthalmology.

Shalev and colleagues used digital retinal imaging, a relatively new and noninvasive method, to gain a window onto vascular conditions in the brain by looking at the small blood vessels of the retina, located at the back of the eye. Retinal blood vessels share similar size, structure, and function with blood vessels in the brain and can provide a way of examining brain health in living humans.

The researchers examined data from participants taking part in the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, a longitudinal investigation of health and behavior in over 1000 people born between April 1972 and March 1973 in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The results were intriguing.

Having wider retinal venules was linked with lower IQ scores at age 38, even after the researchers accounted for various health, lifestyle, and environmental risk factors that might have played a role.

Individuals who had wider retinal venules showed evidence of general cognitive deficits, with lower scores on numerous measures of neurospsychological functioning, including verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and executive function.

Surprisingly, the data revealed that people who had wider venules at age 38 also had lower IQ in childhood, a full 25 years earlier.

It's "remarkable that venular caliber in the eye is related, however modestly, to mental test scores of individuals in their 30s, and even to IQ scores in childhood," the researchers observe.

The findings suggest that the processes linking vascular health and cognitive functioning begin much earlier than previously assumed, years before the onset of dementia and other age-related declines in brain functioning.

"Increasing knowledge about retinal vessels may enable scientists to develop better diagnosis and treatments to increase the levels of oxygen into the brain and by that, to prevent age-related worsening of cognitive abilities," the researchers conclude.

The study has been published in the journal Psychological Science.

This summer, make a birdbath!

Little fountains, plastic bowls or tiled areas in a garden or indoors can serve as 'water relief' for birds and animals in this season

Summer's almost here and while humans find it tough to stay cool and hydrated, for birds this is even more so! This time, make a provision for your feathered pals with a birdbath — a small pond or basin, filled with water from which birds may drink or 'cool off.' "Bird baths are a great way of lending a helping hand to the birds in our city. In summer especially, they desperately need water. I love keeping bird-baths because I also get to see so many birds that I would otherwise not have seen, except on some tree-top, almost out of sight. Just about any shallow container can be converted into a bird-bath, providing the depression is not too deep, especially for sparrows who need something shallow. I have a natural rock one which slopes towards the centre and tiny birds like sparrows as well as big ones like Pariah Kites (Black Kites) all flock to it," says Sunita Mohan, a writer, who has two birdbaths at her home in Mumbai and encourages people to make them through her blog. "In summer, it's important to do this as birds like sparrows, bulbuls, mynahs and babblers are dying out in the city. It's important to do little things like this to save them."

Cities need these desperately
In a city where water, especially clean water is a precious commodity, keeping some aside for the birds is a boon for them. Nilesh Bhanage of an animal rescue organisation says he rescues "at least dozens of birds who suffer due to the heat, every summer." Of these, house crows, rock pigeons and black kites are the most affected. "Birds are, by and large, very delicate creatures, weighing just 100-200g and they cannot take hot weather, needing to have water several times a day and sometimes just taking a bath in water to cool off. And as these three birds (mentioned above) fly throughout the day, they get more tired and distressed." Our highly polluted cities add to their woes. "Due to the high level of carbon dioxide, depleting green cover and rising temperatures, there is greater humidity which causes the heat strokes, so having a water supply for them at hand in such time is crucial," he adds.

A water basin for animals too!
Ganesh Nayak of another organisation that saves animals and birds, says that life of a stray is very difficult and the harsh heat only makes it worse for them. He explains how a small step that building societies take, can add up to be a blessing for numerous stray animals and birds in the vicinity. "These bowls double up as feeding bowls for our local stray animal feeders. Once installed society members can request maintenance personnel to clean and refill the bowls frequently. To drive home to the point, we have some cement bowls ready, which we give out for free. All one needs to do is get a mason to install it in the area," he says.

Needed: a long-term answer
Atul Sathe, of a natural history society, says, while it's a good idea to have a birdbath that only works for the present and the larger solution is to create and maintain the natural habitat in the city. "We appreciate birdfeeders and the like; they are certainly useful but this is not sufficient. If you want birds in your area the primary thing is to have more trees; more of these need to be planted and that too, of the native variety."

The other thing, he states, is to have a good soil surface. "In the current state of affairs, most of the city is paved, which means there is little or no soil or insects. Cement also heats up the city. All this can drive the birds away. Thus, the existing need is a soil surface at any cost," he stresses.

Kinds of baths
-Use a sink or tray.
-You can also take a large terracotta saucer that you use for flower pots.
-A large stone bowl.
-Readymade bird bath.

Make your own bath
-Do not use shiny or glazed surfaces as these reflect sunlight and can scare away the birds. Terracotta dishes are better.
-Place the bath near plants, as that instills confidence in the bird to come nearer and they feel they can take shelter among the greenery when they want.
-Change the water regularly. Just a cup will do.
-If you're keeping a birdbath in a garden place it partially exposed to the sun as birds do not like the full glare of the sun. Also, it should be at a little height, so that cats can't reach it. If it is at home, keep it in a quieter area.

What to do when you see an exhausted bird
Advises Nilesh, "Don't hold it in your hand or pass it from hand to hand. Instead, put it in a cardboard box, which will help it to come out of shock. Keep a little water in a corner of the box. Do not feed it or force it to drink. Call an expert at rescues who will be able to cover it correctly with a wet cloth. Also call a vet who will administer medicine."

Strengthen your arms with strong biceps

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 22 Juni 2013 | 18.47

Whether on a man or woman, well developed and toned biceps help anyone stand out in a crowd.

Gone are the days of Arnold's big guns and flabby heroine arms. The lean, sculpted look is in and for that, well defined arms are a must. This definition begins at the shoulders and continues with the biceps. Well cut biceps add that X factor to your look and any outfit. Arnav Sarkar, the guru on Strength and Conditioning lists out the five most effective exercises to develop your biceps. Before that, let's flex our muscles on why and how to develop biceps.

Which muscles form the biceps?

'The biceps lie on the upper arm between the shoulder and the elbow. Both heads arise on the scapula and join to form a single muscle belly which is attached to the upper forearm.' As mentioned in Wikipedia, Biceps

In simple words, it forms the muscle group on your upper arm that is situated between the deltoids and your elbow.

Why do you need to develop biceps?

How important is it to rotate your forearm? Rotate it and feel which muscles are involved. You will sense that biceps are important to rotate your forearm; guess you never thought of it before!

But biceps also help to flex the elbow. Besides, biceps also link to you shoulder joint. You may have not thought of it before, but biceps are needed for the working and functioning of your arm. Weak biceps mean weak arm movement.

Expert's advice on developing biceps

Arnav Sarkar explains how to develop your biceps, "If you want to build big biceps then don't forget chin ups and heavy rows. While most go after some variation of a curl, it's the big compound movements that often create the greatest gains in size and thickness of the bicep muscles."

Top 5 Exercises for biceps

Here are 5 top moves that you must do if bigger biceps are your goal:

Chin up
You have heard of pull ups, well chin ups are another form of the pull up exercise. Chin ups develop your biceps as well as back muscles, specifically called latissimus dorsi. Your core and back are crucial for chin ups, so don't forget to engage both areas.

Inverted rows
Inverted row is a compound exercise. Inverted rows also help develop your trapezius and back. This exercise is like a reverse bench press where you are pulling your body towards the bar instead of drawing weights to you.

Barbell rows
With this exercise you can develop your biceps and your back. But it is also important to use your abs while lifting weights.

1 arm dumbbell row
This exercise develops your biceps but it also works your back muscles and shoulders. All you need is a bench and a dumbbell.

Barbell/dumbbell or e-z bar curls
E-z bar curls is an easy form of exercise and is important to execute it slowly.

Breathe in the fresh mountain air of Sikkim

As the plane landed at the Bagdogra Airport on a windy saturday morning, I peeped through the windows at the lush green forest, excited at the prospect of spending a few days in Sikkim.

The state, tucked away in the Northeast, is small but beautiful and full of surprises. Sikkim promises all kinds of tourism from 'eco' to adventure to spiritual, but what can be a bigger draw than the chance to relax in the lap of the great Himalayas? For city-dwellers like myself and my cousin Vasumathi, a wellknown geographer, it was fantastic to just breathe in the fresh mountain air!

Many friends warned us about the tricky weather and the biting cold and so we were fully prepared with warm clothing. However, the weather was fine throughout our stay and we needed the sweaters and woolen coats only while going up the mountains to the Nathu-La.

Climbing up the winding roads to Gangtok took more than five hours. The scenic route was grand, but alas, pretty bumpy! We had our lunch at a guesthouse on the banks of the beautiful Teesta River but by the time we reached Gangtok our bones were aching. Since there was nothing planned for the rest of the evening, we decided to relax and recuperate — and book our return flights by helicopter as neither of us were willing to go through that bone-rattling experience again. Of course, in the light of recent incidents, I would probably prefer rattled bones than a helicopter next time round...

Although Gangtok is not very big, there is so much to see —monasteries, the zoo, temples, flower shows and exhibitions—as we were informed by Tarachand, our excellent guide. After a hearty breakfast washed down with Temi tea, we stopped at the Hanumantok, located at about 9km from Gangtok. The beautiful temple, located at an altitude of 7200 feet, was completely free from pollution.

The steps to the quiet hilltop temple were steep but there were many tourists like us — including from the far off Tamil Nadu, who were looking through their binoculars at the spectacular view of the mountains. From the top, I could see the Khanghendzonga (Kanchenjunga) and had a bird's eye view of Gangtok— a kaleidoscope of tiny houses painted in different colours! The pundit informed us that AB Pant, the then Political Officer, established the temple in 1952 and since then the Indian Army and donations from devotees maintain it. Sharma, our driver and a devout Hindu, added that the temple was known for its mystical powers to fulfill wishes. The close by Lukshyama, the cremation ground of the royal family was an added draw. Coming down on the way back, we stopped at another temple called the Ganeshtok, at 6500 ft, also built by AB Pant, a year after Hanumantok in 1953! From there too, I could see snow-clad peaks including the Kanchenjunga. Clearly it was a popular spot as lots of buses and taxis were parked outside. After a sumptuous lunch, we decided to walk around in the afternoon to get a feel of the city. Soon we found ourselves gasping for breath as the roads were so steeply inclined! We city-slickers were not equipped for such exertions! We came back exhausted and after a light dinner of Chinese dumpling, fried rice and noodles we called it a day.

Tips for a smart and friendly kitchen

Kitchens need not really be the messiest place on earth as with a little bit of effort you can keep them spic-and-span and absolutely organised.

Besides, when at home we do end up spending a lot of time in the kitchen, then why should a little inspiration hurt.

Anurag Saxena of German kitchen furnishing brand, Hacker Kitchens, shares with us some ideas to tidy up the kitchen space and make it look more orderly and liveable.

1. Make more efficient use of your space, from simple drawer inserts to clever pullout shelving units, to full-on custom cabinetry that enables storing.

2. Store spice containers with labels facing out, and group by type or organise alphabetically. Discard and replace spices that no longer have much of a scent; if there's no smell, there's no flavour.

3. If your kitchen doesn't have enough counter space, add a rolling cart that provides extra room to organise.

4. Remove any cookbooks or magazines you don't use regularly. For instance, store holiday cookbooks outside the kitchen.

5. Keep dishes either close to the dishwasher so they're easy to put away - or close to the table, so it's a snap to set.

6. Consider different countertop heights. If you're short, you might want to lower some countertops below the 36-inch standard -- a good rule of thumb is countertops should be 3 inches below your elbow.

7. Keep extra trash bags in the bottom of your trash can so that you always have a new bag handy -- and the unused bags don't take up room in your cabinets.

8. Even a kitchen with lots of storage space can get overrun with clutter. Get rid of duplicates, and don't be tempted to fill every shelf and drawer to capacity.

9. Choose drawers instead of cupboards for heavy, large items such as pots; they slide out and make it easier to find what you're reaching for.

10. When cleaning the interior/exterior surfaces of your kitchen furniture, remember to never use scouring agents, furniture polish, abrasive cleaning agents, or artificial resin thinners, acetone or similar cleaners or micro-fibre cloths in order to prevent damage.

11. Wood is a natural material. Its grain and colour make every kitchen unique. To clean them, simply wipe them in the direction of the wood grain using a slightly damp cloth to remove dirt particles from the pores.

Follow these easy pointers, and your kitchen is as good as new.

Restaurant review: The Ship (Western)

The ship has been around for a while but has recently had a make-over with new management.

Decor
The decor looks by and large the same only a bit spruced up with a nice black and white checker board tile floor and a juke box in the corner. Gone are the silly white sails and so should the curtains. It looks more like a classic pub now with a central wooden bar, some high tables and easy seating.

Food
The bar menu at Ship is quite long with a fabulous new cocktail selection done especially for the restaurant by a UK company. I tried their lime margarita and the spicy one with habanero chilli- both outstanding and served correctly, shaken with cracked ice. I am sure the mojitos, Captains specials, martinis, long island teas and daiquiris are as stunning. They also have a range of absinthe - that dreaded French fennel flavoured liquour which, I must say is more bark than bite and an extensive selection of tequilas including Patron and Don Julio. If you get to the food, you should order the barbecue, melt in the mouth, ribs and the fantabulous nachos. You don't need meat on the nachos at all although chicken and tenderloin versions are available. The tortilla chips are homemade with pico de gallo (a fresh salsa), jalapeno, sour cream and guacamole... all really scrumptious and authentic without dripping in cheese sauce. The wasabi prawns done tempura style and served with a mango salsa was also delicious. If you are into 'picking' try a mini burger or slider, poutine French fries served with gravy and cheese curd and their burgers. I must say their Captains beef burger with grilled onions, bacon, cheese, fried egg and onion rings was quite a whopper. Plenty in the Italian section for vegetarians. Children will love the oreo milkshake and their special children's menu. It is not surprising that this place is full of expats most days. It must be like a home away from home with the pub like ambience and food to match. I must say there is a huge improvement in the bar and food menu as well as the very accommodating service.

Plus & Minus:
Fabulous drinks and new bar menu. If anything, desserts need improvement.

The Ship: 217, Fortaleza Central Ave, Kalyani Nagar, Pune, 411006
Price for two: ` 1800 (without alcohol)

6 simple tips to choose a mattress

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 21 Juni 2013 | 18.47

A good night's sleep is very essential for a healthy life. It is not just the number of hours that plays an important role in ensuring a good sleep but also the level of comfort that depends on the mattress that you choose to relax on.

Mattresses are not the same for every person; some are designed to cushion your stiff back while others provide support according to a person's height, age or weight. We generally do not pay much attention to these factors before buying a mattress; but neglecting such concerns can affect our sleeping habit.

Puneet Verma, General Manager of a US-based mattress firm and store (with several branches in many cities in India) shares some guidelines on what to keep in mind before selecting a mattress:

Age of your existing mattress
If you've been having trouble sleeping, the problem might not be your mattress, but its age. Every mattress comes with its own expiry date. After a certain period of time, mattresses no longer retain their original comfort quality. This is the time that you should consider changing your mattress to prevent further troubles to your body.

The three S's
Softness, support and size are three important attributes of a mattress. In India, most customers tend to prioritise the cost of the mattress over other components and end up complaining later.

Test before you finalise
Once you've made up your mind on a particular mattress, try lying down on it for at least 10 to 15 minutes. This will help you check for its comfort and reliability. Do not hurry with the big purchase and let not your decision be only influenced by the salesman.

Check for all options and variations
Check whether the mattress is firm, stylish and accompanied with a pillow-top the brand promises to offer. Do not settle for anything mediocre.

Shop at a real mattress store
Avoid shopping from department stores. Salespeople at a mattress store are usually more trained and skilled enough to help you with the correct choice.

Do not forget to check the warranty
A good mattress will have a minimum of a 10 year 'full' replacement or a 'Non-prorated warranty'.

After it's all about sleeping well!

Lemon mojito: Harbhajanka recommends this one, which is made by mixing mint leaves, sugar, lemon, sprite and crushed ice. All ingredients are perfect to beat summer heat.

Lemon putu monkey: Nikita Khattar, owner Bora Bora, suggests a drink that has lemon along with other hydrating ingredients. "Lemon putu monkey is a blend of coconut water with pineapple and lemon chunks which will keep you hydrated for sure," she said.

Lemon pina colada: Khattar suggests one more drink for summer. "It is a mix of coconut syrup, lime juice syrup, coconut water and lemon chunks. It is healthy, refreshing, cold and perfect to beat the heat," she explained.
