Fashion wins and flops

Like the old adage explains, fashion changes more frequently than the weather. The year 2013 witnessed a variety of trends. Some good, some bad and some, well, downright ugly! TOI brings you a list of the most sought-after trends this year. Have a look!

Good

The half-sari

The one trend that became a rage was the half-sari. Thanks to Chennai Express! This humble south Indian traditional attire caught the limelight. The style was adopted immensely by the Indian fashion domain.

Henleys

Men constantly complained that they don't have as many choices as women, but Henley was the answer to all to their problems this year. A classic alternative to a simple T-shirt, they look great and stylish.

Box clutch

Catchy and timeless; that's the definition of a box-shaped clutch. If you are not carrying a box clutch or minaudiere, as it is called by the sophisticated lot, then you need a lesson or two in the trend of the year.
Lace
Lace has fallen in and out of favour in the past decade, but it came back with a bang this year and will blend well into 2014. It's feminine and adds grace instantly. The best thing about a lace dress is that it's a very versatile outfit.

Messy updo

This easy-peasy catwalk style is perfect for work, the beach or a night out with friends. Probably why the style was trending this 2013 and was seen from red carpet to colleges. This effortlessly stylish and chic hairdo is the way to go and raise hell.

Bad

Buzzcut

Girls around the world and right here in our backyard started sporting the buzz cut after celebrities like Cassie, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus. Then guys started sporting it too; and it was just as bad!

Torn jeans

Jeans were invented for workers. Then they became fashionable. Years later we thought tearing them and wearing them was even better. But now torn jeans have reached that point where there is more tear and less jeans. And guys, if you're going to wear torn jeans, shave your legs!

Sheer

Gwyneth Paltrow and Jaimie Alexander successfully carried off the sheer look at the red carpet. And girls here thought it was hip to follow them and out of sheer desperation (pardon the pun), decided to wear sheer tops with almost anything. The end result — any number of wardrobe malfunctions.

Ugly

Webbed-feet footwear

Criticized left, right and centre by the fashion police, webbed-feet footwear was indeed the ugliest fashion trend that surfaced this year. The short-lived fame of this footwear was all due to college students. Its easy-to-slip-in feature appealed to the youth and that is essentially why it gained popularity.

High-low dresses

There is a thin line between disproportionate and asymmetrical. And many ladies just ignored this fact when they picked up a high-low dress without getting the basics right. While high-low dresses are a strict no-no for short women, the taller ones need to be very meticulous while sporting one.

V-Necks for males

Okay when the men have a clean-shaven chest to bare, yucky when all that peeps out is hair. Guys, it is a turn-off and nothing more! Ignore unless asked to wear one at gunpoint.
