Mixologists show how to modify the classic Margarita cocktail to suit your taste

In its classic form — tequila, lime juice and Cointreau or Triple Sec, served in a glass with a salted rim — the Margarita is a perfect combination of sweet, salty, sour and bitter.

Any bartender worth his salt will always insists that he's the only one who knows how to make the perfect Margarita, because he's the only one who knows 'the perfect proportions' or 'the perfect way to rim a glass'.

"However, a true Margarita aficionado understands that 'the perfect Margarita' is subjective. This is primarily because the Margarita is one of the most versatile cocktails out there. It can be prepared in different textures (on-the-rocks or frozen) and proportions to appeal to different palates," says mixologist Desmond Nazareth from DesmondJi. We met Nazareth and fellow mixologist Conrad Braganza before their interactive workshop that demonstrated the cocktail's versatility at Mexican Margarita bar Amigos in Versova, Mumbai.

Popular versions
There are those who say that 'the perfect Margarita' must be made with the right proportions of Agave (a natural cocktail sweetener) spirit and orange liqueur because the liqueur enhances the flavour and bouquet of the cocktail without affecting its colour. Then again, there are those who prefer their Margarita to be a combination of Agave spirit and blue curacao with its sparkling blue colour.

Salted rim or not?
And then there's the matter of the salted rim. Many swear that a salted rim truly enhances the flavour of their Margarita; while there are others who insist on using a combination of salt and sugar in equal proportions. And still others that don't like any salt at all! It's a toss-up, so take your pick.

Fruit Margaritas
A well-liked version of this cocktail is the fruit Margarita. "There are any number of fruits that can be combined with Agave spirits to create a series of heady Margaritas," says Braganza. However, the secret to making the perfect fruit Margarita lies in using fresh fruits. So, with the help of an electric blender you can puree any fresh fruit — strawberries, pears, pineapples, blueberries, raspberries or bananas — to enhance the flavour of the Margarita and create a unique cocktail to tickle your individual palate.
