The lowdown on bags

From sleek and mini to extravagantly oversized, we give you a lowdown on the bag du jour to help you pick the right one.

SHAPE AND SIZE
The central design element of any clutch is its shape, which depends on two factors - functionality and occasion. Big, roomy clutches that come in the shape of envelopes are apt for day get-togethers and brunches, as they double up as a regular purse that can accommodate a lot of things. Fancy clutches that are meant for evening functions are comparatively smaller and come in funky geometric shapes like squares, circles, sleek box cases etc. They are usually used to carry just the essentials like the mobile phone, cash or card, keys and lipstick.

CLASP OF THE CLUTCH
The closure of the clutch is what makes or breaks its design. From simple mag netic chips and old school clasps like those in coin purses to fancy technical lock systems, you are spoilt for choice.

Always select a clutch with a locking technique you are comfortable with. What's the point if it takes too long to open!

MIXING METALS
When opting for a party clutch, make sure you match the exposed metallic structure of the clutch with the metal of your watch and the remaining accessories. For a cocktail, go for a clutch with silver details and for traditional, festive occasions, pick a clutch with a metallic golden finish. Don't let metals clash. Also, if you have any kind of embroidery on your outfit, see to it that it matches your clutch.

PLAY MATCHING MATCHING
Wearing matching matching isn't always a fashion faux pas. It is a great idea to customise the clutch with the trimmings of your lehenga or sari border or simply make a special one by embellishing the clutch with a complementary motif. How about a box clutch made out of the matching Banarasi brocade of your sari blouse or a simple, sleek box clutch covered with exclusive Patola or Paithani borders? Tip: For the party, try matching your shoes to your clutch. Experts often tell you not to make your outfits too matchy-matchy, but this one definitely works.

INVEST CREATIVELY
Build a fetish for quirky and oneof-a-kind clutches, as they easily function as an ice breaker at boring parties. Moreover, they can instantly transform a mundane dress that you may have worn several times into a fresh look.Think funky pop art printed clutches, magazine-shaped clutch, famous Chanel lego clutch, simple, transparent acrylic box clutch or a Judith Leiber clutch, which is a piece of wearable art.

WHAT SUITS YOU BEST
When picking a clutch, keep your body type, age and personality in mind. What is your personality? Classic and chic or bold and edgy? Choose the one you think you can carry confidently.

Larger clutches with pockets will help you organise your belongings for added convenience. Moreover, if you are petite, opt for a small clutch in a shape that complements your body shape. Plus-size women should look for larg er purses. Also, consider your age and dress ing style. You may like an edgy piece for its uniqueness and design sensibility, but it may not necessarily match your classy, elegant style of dressing.

WHAT'S IN VOGUE?
Acrylic clutches are very much in vogue today.Almost all designers, luxury brands and high-street labels have a variety to offer. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Among other popular trends are clutches in neon colours, mother of pearl finish, inlaid designs, sheer fabrics, leather, knits and metallic linear lines. To add that personal touch to your stylish self, you can have your name or some fun words carved on the clutch; may be something that describes your personality. The transparent box clutch with leather details and cool words like "naughty" or "wild" is a rage!

THE RIGHT WAY TO `CLUTCH' IT
Never hold a clutch in your armpits. Never carry it with those loose wrist handles that are attached at the corner. To look elegant and poised, hold your clutch by placing your hand along the bottom of the bag and rest it against your hip at an angle. It makes one look thinner too, which is an added bonus!
