A major reason behind this feat achieved in just over four years is the youngsters thronging to the app in recent times, driven by quest to follow their favourite celebrities and their personal moments in real time. The video feature, which was introduced earlier this year has also been lapped up by the celebrities because of its ease of use.
Consequently, the star-struck fans in India are also not behind in following their favourite celebs real-time. And its not only about following. The youngsters are also taking fashion and styling tips from the pictures shared by the stars.
Alisha Khan, 22, has been using Instagram for past one year now, following Alia Bhatt on the app. "Everyone is on Facebook and Twitter these days but Instagram is way different from others as if offers a more personalised space than the previous two mediums. I have been following Alia since past one year and feel more comfortable posting my pictures and following her. Apart from that, I also get a sneak peek on what's latest in Alia's wardrobe," says Alisha.
Leave alone fashion, the fans are also eager to borrow the fitness and makeup tips from these celebrities. "My friends compliment me that I resemble Sonakshi Sinha. She's also my favourite actress so I always try to maintain a level of communication with her. Also its the era of instant-clicks which offer a deeper insight to the private life of the actors - at a level which was not imagined before. I regularly follow Sonakshi for health tips and in fact, its her gymming pics, which have inspired me to follow a healthy diet and workout regimen," says Srishti Verma, 24, HR professional working in Ranchi.
For Monika Rani, 19 and a mass communication student, its more about simply following her matinee idol "I love Deepika Padukone and following her on Instagram gives me a window to her world. It's good to see that now celebrities are much more open to sharing a bit a their lives with their fans through pictures," says Monika.
However, for Safal Raj, 21 and an aspiring model, its all about Sallu bhai's style. "Salman is my ultimate style icon and I have learnt a lot many poses from him only. Be it modelling or routine life, Salman's is on different plane altogether," says Safal.
Having tasted the power of social media firsthand, the younger generation of celebrities are especially more open to socialising with the fans.
"Social media has changed the way we communicate. The best part of it according to me is to be able to keep in touch with your fans! When I give an interview it is a journalist's interpretation of what I have spoken to him/her but on social media it is just me. I feel a sense of freedom of expression and also people know that what I am saying isn't fabricated or being put across through a lens of another person, says Shraddha Kapoor.
Concurring with Shraddha, Siddharth Malhotra also feels the power of instant feedback coming directly from the fans. "Connecting on social media gives you a chance to directly interact with your fans. It gives us the freedom to express our views freely and get feedback instantly," says Siddharth.
While some may also feel that its another marketing gimmick to promote their films, experts differ. "The younger lot of celebrities like Alia, Varun etc have as much grown up with the internet as any other youth in the country. Hence, its natural for them to be comfortable in expressing themselves on social media," says Prabhat Choudhary, leading PR professional.
