However, there's a lot of myth surrounding it too. For one, it's often said that linen cannot be washed at home, and needs to be dry-cleaned. Needless to add, there are ways beyond dry-cleaning to make linen last longer and be as soft as possible. Here's what you should keep in mind to do that: Only oxygen-type bleaches should be used for white linen laundering.
Bleach-free detergents must be used for washing coloured linen articles. Also remember to always use lukewarm water for the purpose.
Do not wring out linen before drying. Lay out your laundered item, pull it into shape and pat it flat to minimize wrinkles and thereby, save your ironing time.
If you postpone ironing your linen items until some time later, put laundered items in a plastic bag and place it in the refrigerator or a freezer for six to 24 hours. It will help them remain damp and prevent mildew formation.
If there is a stain on your linen blouse or trousers, find out if it is water based or oilbased first. If it's water-based, try to blot the stain using a damp white cloth and then wash it with a mild detergent. If the stain is oil based, then you get it done by experts.
How you store your linen also plays a big role in making it last longer. So, wherever you decide to store it, just avoid plastic bags and cardboard boxes.
