A recent book exchange event that took place in the city saw bibliophiles make a bee line to the venue

The odd thing about people who had many books was how they always wanted more," wrote American author Patricia A McKillip.

But what do you do once you've read your favourite book? Do you lend it to someone? Not really. Chances are it might just occupy a place of pride in your library, while you still go around, purchasing more books. The one thing common to all bibliophiles is the attachment they have with their books. Apart from boasting about the authors they read, books are often looked upon as a symbol of intellect, of one's literary tastes. So when a book exchange was organised at a cultural space in the city, it took many by surprise. The one question on everyone's mind was — who would want to part with their prized possessions? The answer is simple; hardcore bibliophiles.

Nayantara Nanda Kumar, a civil and environmental engineer was inspired by her friend Nivedita, who shares books with anyone interested in reading. "My friend Nivedita met this lady at Auroville, Pondicherry. They struck a chord and when Nivedita returned home, the lady surprised her one day by sending her a courier containing all her favourite books. Usually, people hate parting with their books, but this gesture proved that the lady wanted to share with everyone what she enjoyed. This gave me the idea to have a book exchange," explained Nayantara.

Throughout the afternoon, book lovers kept trooping in with bags full of leisure reading, only to exchange them with ones they found interesting. Abhilash Nair, who is in the city from Nagpur, attended the book exchange in hope of finding something that interested him. "I'm an engineer and travel a lot to various sites across the state. The only thing that keeps me going when I travel to far off rural places is a good book. I read about this event in the newspaper and thought of coming here," said Nair, who was spotted going through the titles. "Unfortunately, I didn't bring any book, so I'm a little apprehensive of picking up what I want," added Nair. But thanks to the curator, the engineer was encouraged to pick up a book which caught his interest. The event also drew a lot of young parents and children. "My daughter brought a whole bag of books. Something like this is exciting as it inculcates good reading habits among the young ones," said a guest, Savita Prem. The informal air at the event saw people sitting in corners reading books or just starting conversations with other guests.

Apart from the books on exchange, the organic bazaar, live painting corner, terracotta jewellery stores and food stalls kept the guests busy throughout the afternoon. From foodgrains, organic mangoes to authentic regional delicacies made in organic produce, the bazaar had it all.

The event even attracted international tourists. Anavita Hamilton from Alaska, was spotted sitting in a corner, painting a Ganesha. "I came to the city a couple of days ago, and got to know of the event online. As a tourist, this is the perfect place for me to soak in some Indian culture and indulge in intellectual conversations," she says.

Nayantara is hopeful that people experience the joy of sharing something beautiful they read. "It's all about sharing with others what you enjoy. Instead of books just lying around, you can exchange or lend them, so that the reader experiences a similar joy that you did," she said.
