It's time for cat appetisers and exotic doggie bites, as pets turn epicureans with their very own fancy menu, writes Ismat Tahseen

Do you ever get looks of disdain or a limp whimper every time you offer your pet its daily meal of either cat or doggie food, table scraps or other simple fare? Well here's something that's bound to make them scamper about with glee. Dogs and cats are now dining on a menu that could easily jump out of a fancy French bistro or Cordon Bleu cookery school. Think wild salmon souffle, lobster consomme and a taste of the classic Granny's Pot Pie! Take out your best cutlery and lay the table right, for we tell you what's in store...

Lavish line-up

While cats have earlier put up with plain Jane tuna or mackerel, there's more to excite the palate now in the way of wild salmon and whipped egg souffle, as well as an Australian entree with native fish like the barramundi. Want the right start to the meal? There's a luxury line of cat appetisers in fancy flavours like steamed tilapia and tongol tuna in broth that's selling like hotcakes!

Another company is sending doggie taste buds to Hawaii with Maui Luau, which is essentially chicken with brown rice, sweet potato, egg, garlic and kale in chicken consomme. Good enough for humans too? "That's definitely the case," says pet chef Wasiff Khan, who dishes out a super premium line of customised foods, in addition to a regular menu as part of his dog tiffin service. "There's a huge demand; people ask for exotic food and don't mind spending for it too," he adds.

Pratima Jamwal of a dog bakery at Juhu blends fruits and meat to make cakes for canines. "The meat biscotti and pupcakes (which are muffins) are hot-selling items, so are the chicken liver cakes and parsley broth biscuits. At Christmas, we also conjure up a turkey and cranberry broth cake which are very popular," she informs.

Designer Maheka Mirpuri, who flies down special recipe treats for Vodkaa, her Shih Tzu, from abroad, says she loves spoiling him. "He's a total chicken-atarian and as he's fussy I give him different foods all the time," she says. Looks like this is just about perfect for Vodkaa!
