Does eating a beef patty stuffed between noodles in form of a burger sound weird? The foodies in New York definitely don't think so as they queue up for hours to grab a bite of the ramen burger, the latest international culinary craze. A brainchild of a 35-year-old ramen blogger Keizo Shimamoto, this Japanese-American mash-up, comprises a hamburger patty sandwiched between two discs of compressed ramen noodles instead of the traditional bun.
As this innovative burger, which made its debut last week, creates a stir on the streets of New York, here's looking at some interesting burgers dished out by Mumbai's restobars and delis.
Holland Dutch Indonesian satay beef burger
Like its name, this burger, available at Woodside Inn, Colaba, is also quite a mouthful. While a regular beef burger comprises of a meat patty, this one actually has the grilled meat served in skewers between the buns.
American whopper with candied bacon
We've all heard about the classic whopper hamburger but this one comes with a twist. The burger patty is topped with sweet and savoury candied bacon. Here, the traditional bun is replaced with ciabatta bun, an Italian white bread made from wheat flour and yeast. With truffle fries, coleslaw, ketchup and home-made mustard served on the side, this whopper is surely a wacky one.
Veg jalapeno popper burger
The crowd-pleasing Italian appetisers, cheesy jalapeno poppers, have now made their way in the American burger as well. A famous bread eatery, Between Breads in Bandra, dishes out a burger that features freshly made crispy vegetable potato patty topped with grilled onion, tomato and jalapeno poppers that have cheese oozing out every time you take a bite.
Belgian pancake beef burger with fried onion rings
If you thought pancakes only made for a good breakfast option, think again. A unique burger doing rounds is the Belgian pancake beef burger which, as the name suggests, comprises home-made pancakes instead of a conventional bun. The combination of the slightly sweet pancake and savoury beef patty along with fried onion rings is definitely quirky.
Idli burger
Think idli burger and one imagines veggies or chutney stuffed between two idlis. But Pritam Fast Food, a modest eatery in Vile Parle believes in doing things a little differently. Here, an idli burger features crunchy, fried rice cakes on top of a vegetable patty between conventional buns. Now, if this isn't innovative, what is?
10 ounce bacon cheeseburger
While a hamburger is now a common sight at Mumbai's eateries, very few serve a bacon cheeseburger, one of them being Between Breads at Bandra. This large burger features 10 pound juicy and succulent ground beef patty topped with bacon pieces that makes it a meat lover's delight. Adding to the size is the stuffing of Gouda cheese, barbeque sauce, onion rings, tomato and pickles.
Soya barley and cracked wheat burger
Who said a vegetarian burger only consisted of an aloo patty? Indigo Delicatessen at Lower Parel has started dishing out a burger that comprises a soya and barley patty coated with broken wheat and topped brie cheese. A good option for the veggies, the blend of crunchy wheat and soya chunks surely make this one different and delicious.
Madras roast chicken burger
Imagine eating an American burger and experiencing typical South Indian taste. Dished out by The Big Nasty, a known restobar at Khar, Madras roast chicken burger features boneless chicken leg pieces instead of the regular minced meat patty. Available in two sizes — regular and large that is called the nasty — the taste of ground mustard, usually found in South Indian fare, makes this burger unique.
