While studies reveal that women prefer jeans when depressed, a majority deny this theory, stating depression as just an excuse to reach out for their jeans

A pair of jeans is said to be a girl's best friend, which stands by her through thick and thin. It's often said that the way a woman dresses up reflects her mood. However, a recent study took this theory to the next level. It states — 51% of women will reach out for their jeans when they are feeling low, with almost six out of 10 teaming it with a baggy top. But only a mere 2% would wear it when feeling happy.

However, experts state that this finding does not hold any relevance to Indian women for whom jeans is a safer and comfortable option to hit the road than in a short dress or skirt.
Moreover, contrary to the study, most girls in the city even said that a pair of jeans is the easiest option to beat the blues!

"Jeans is something that I feel comfortable wearing. Therefore, I tend to slip into my jeans when I'm feeling low than reach for a salwar or dress. We are a 'jean-gen' after all," quips Gayatri S, a media professional.

"I opt for jeans when I'm in a hurry and not when I'm depressed," states Aditi Varma, a software professional in the city. Divya Cherian, a banking professional, can't agree more. "A pair of well-fitted jeans and top gives you a super cool look and highlights your curves besides hiding your flabs," says Divya.

However, Divya adds that nevertheless, the way you dress is a reflection of your mood. "Several factors can indicate that you are not in a good mood; for instance an ill-fitting top," says Divya.

Experts suggest that careless dressing does not help a woman beat the blues; on the contrary, it only aggravates it. Says Sheena Rose, a stylist, "Keep aside your problems just for a few minutes when you pick up your favourite dress or top or accessory out of your wardrobe. A beautiful outfit will accentuate your mood instantly."

So, next time you clean your wardrobe, make sure to throw out that baggy outfit that will worsen your depression. You can even wear subtle make-up to help you deal with depression better.

Quick fix
Play off your drab pair of jeans by teaming it with accessories, shoes, nail paints or handbags in bright and vibrant colours like red, yellow, green or even bright floral prints.
