Potpourri not only lends a pleasant aroma to your home - it also helps to warding off unpleasant smells and diseases.

So why not whiff up your very own combination of fragrances with a little help at home?

Ingredients:

Flowers and leaves: You can collect flowers and dry them yourself. Flowers will take up to two weeks for drying up. You need to keep them in a warm dark place that has a good air circulation. You can also ask a florist to give you their discarded flowers.

Essential oils: These essences can be used to enhance the potpourri - rose, lavender, geranium, sandalwood, lemon verbena, cedar wood, eucalyptus and citronella are great options.

Spices and herbs: Cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves are traditional spices. But you can experiment with anise, cardamom, coriander, vanilla pods to make an exotic mixture. If you want a stronger and clearer aroma, use freshly ground spices.

Fixatives: There are used to absorb, blend and preserve the scent of all these dried ingredients. You can use dried Orris roots or Gum benzoin resin.

How to make the potpourri:
Once your potpourri is dried and mixed, add six drops of your favorite essential oil to every one cup of the dried mix. Keep this in a closed container for a few weeks to allow the scent to penetrate the flowers and leaves. Remember to stir the mixture daily.

How to store it:
Before you set it up on your table, store this mixture in airtight containers or plastic bags, in a cool dark place.
