Those men with sexy studs!

Men with earrings are back. There's nothing metrosexual about men's jewellery anymore. It's the macho men who're making a hot style statement this year with studded diamonds in their ears!

Interestingly, The New York Times reports, how more and more men are wearing earrings and flaunting them! From Hrithik Roshan who wore loops in Jodha Akbar, to Salman Khan who flaunts his loops and studs in his ears; there's David Beckham and Justin Timberlake who've become `icons' for their hip-hop look with earrings. Why even Sanjay Dutt admits he loves to wear, "clip-on earrings once in a while.' While Maradona's known for his `luxury' diamond earrings.

The rise of men wearing earrings and other jewellery, showcases a rise of new masculinity, which is free from metrosexual or homosexual undertones. Adventurous men are now trying spacer plugs instead of normal earrings. Delhi-based designer Abdul Halder, who wears diamond studs in both his ears says, "There's something very hip-hop and young about men who wear earrings and other jewellery. We've moved on from the George Michael of Wham era, earrings are the new chic. They're certainly not metrosexual or gay. I got my ears pierced five years ago. My mother didn't approve, but the diamond studs were a gift from my sister. It changed the way I look. I feel it's very fashionable to flaunt your earrings. It doesn't stereotype my masculinity, rather it's a show of my strength!"

Says designer Raakesh Agarvwal, "Men in Rajasthan wore earrings as a show of strength, valour and royal style. It made the men look very classy. The Maharajas wore fancy earrings to 'differentiate' themselves, which were made-to-order at Cartier. Men's jewellery has lost its stereotype image, I see a lot of men wearing a bangle, pendant and bracelets. It looks funky. Marc Jacobs looks sophisticated in studs, Tom Ford wore a stud in his ear — it gives character to faces of some men." That's something New York-based jewellery designer Rosena Sammi agrees, "I think men shouldn't overdo wearing any form of jewellery, it should be subtle."

It was in the late 60s, when men wearing earrings in right ear were meant to be gay, it was safe to get the left ear pierced by straight men. Says designer Varun Bahl, "Men have been wearing jewellery since primitive ages. Jewellery for men has different interpretation in every decade. Minimalism in men's jewellery is what works. Just don't go over the top. Though I find more and more men wearing jewellery, I wouldn't experiment."

Says designer Nitin Bal Chauhan, "There's immense romanticism in men wearing earrings. Jewellery for men isn't regular, it's a very niche and naughty statement.
