Wondering where you heard these before? The answer is pretty simple. At one of those numerous gossip sessions —be it at the college canteen, your office or over a cup of chai with your close buddies.
Gossip is something that no one can run away from. However, if recent studies are to be believed, it's not just about idle talk/rumour, or about saying things about people behind their backs.
A new study says that gossip can definitely be used to one's advantage in a constructive manner. The study cites the example of a Sydney-based recruitment agency's managing director, who could not afford to reward everyone with a pay hike. Worried that doing so only for a few might adversely affect morale, he chose to ignite a rumour by informing a key aide that he was seeking to award some employees pay hikes in return for their taking on more responsibility. The rumour spread rapidly and the workers proved so supportive that the notion was adopted as policy!
Can gossips really play a useful role in our day-to-day lives? VJ Cyrus Sahukar agrees to an extent, "While I haven't gained much personally from gossips, I believe that you can get a lot of useful information if you know how to filter gossip."
However, for film actress Brinda Parekh, gossip is a strict no-no. "I always stay away from gossip. Even the link-ups of filmstars turn out to be false more often than not. Gossips can't be helpful," she says.
Still, there are people who have benefited from it. Himadri Sekhar Das, an engineer, says, "Often, discussing about others leads to useful facts. While still new to the city, I was discussing with others about a colleague who is a foodie. It actually led me to know about some good city eateries. That was helpful."
It seems gossip does have its benefits.
