Author Manu Joseph launches his new book in Bangalore

When author Manu Joseph came to Garden City to launch his new book, The Illicit Happiness of Others, it was admirable that he kept it quiet and literary.

The British Library was the perfect venue for the event, and the guests, serious readers and all seriously interested in what their favourite author had to say, sat spellbound right through the evening, listening to all that he had to say.

The question answer session by M K Raghavendra began with a reading of a few excerpts and those who had not got around to reading the book as yet, found the passages totally intriguing. Raghavendra asked Manu about the comic metaphor that is part of his works and the author said that most of his examples were from real life, and could often be related to someone you remember in life. "I try to explain things in analogies," he said and added that when a person tries to achieve accuracy in his observations, it can be funny. He explained how the references to Balaji Lane in the novel are inspired by the lane where he grew up in the Madras of 1991.

Manu also spoke at length about the scarcity of cartoonists in the country. "I feel we are a nation of few cartoonists," he says, adding, "Many of them use puns and I don't find them funny."

The book is essentially about Ousep Chacko who decides to reopen the mystery of the suicide of his 17-year-old son Unni, a cartoonist with a cosmic eye.

As to why he named the book, "The Illicit Happiness of Others', Manu explains that it refers to the emotions of some people who feel happier at the expense of others' tragedies, and is therefore, 'illicit'.

After the book launch, no-one wanted to head home. They hung around the lectern, waiting for an autograph or to chat with the author they just couldn't get enough of.
