A weird trend is catching on among students in Ranchi — more and more of them are shifting to hostels and PG accommodations! The college and even school-goers are citing lack of privacy, constant disturbance in joint families and the desire to spend time with friends as the reasons behind the move. TOI tries to fathom why, despite myriad downsides like tasteless food, dirty washrooms and dingy living quarters, the students are going the 'independent' way.
Studies come first!
Though not very convincing, the most common reason cited by fuchchas for shifting to a hostel is actually to study! Those preparing either for competitive examinations or pursuing medical or engineering courses are moving in with 'like-minded' friends to study together, as they are allegedly fed up with the constant din and never-endingjhik jhik at home.
"Studying at home with a joint family, especially when two weddings are due, is a big challenge!" said Shreya Aggarwal, an IAS aspirant. "I was preparing for the civil mains, but given the hungama in the house over the two upcoming weddings in our family, I convinced my parents to let me shift to a friend's flat to study in peace. Thankfully, I managed to prepare well and was quite satisfied with the papers I wrote," she added.
And she's not alone. Vimal Banerjee, owner of a girls' hostel in the city corroborated the trend. "While hostels are usually meant to support outstation students, an increasing number of local students are moving in to study for exams. The reasons may vary, but I have received many queries from parents who are okay with their wards staying in hostels, as it eases pressure on them too," he said.
Extended sleepover?
Some students are also shifting to places closer to their educational institutions. Tanmaya Ahuja, a third-year engineering student of BIT Mesra, shifted to the flat of his outstation friends at Booty More to cut down on the time taken every day to travel to his college.
"I used to travel daily between Hatia and Ormanjhi, where BIT is situated, and it took anywhere between an hour and a half to three hours depending on the traffic. This left me fatigued. So I moved in with my friends to cut down on travel time. We can also help each other now while studying and of course, being with friends helps ease the pressure during exams. Ghar me exam time me masti karenge to dant hi khani padegi," he said.
Masti unlimited!
Apart from the padhaku types, most make the move as staying with friends also means unlimited freedom. "All my friends are outsiders and I kind of envied the kind of fun they had in hostel. So I made all kinds if excuses and convinced my parents to let me stay in the hostel. Now, studies apart, we also have lots of fun!" said Yadunandan Saw, a Central University of Jharkhand student.
Freedom is the incentive for girls too. "Everyone knows that parties usually warm up late in the night. But by that time, our phones start ringing and our parents either land at the venue themselves or send someone to pick us up. This ruins the mood. My party deadline was 9 pm while my brother's was midnight. This used to annoy me. But ever since I moved into a rented flat with my friends, that constraint is gone!" said Ritika Gupta.
