You are what you grow

It's spring. Amidst rows of dazzling flowers are bright bunches of lettuce, berries and herbs decking domestic gardens. Environment and health-savvy food leaders are pushing the `grow your own food' movement in a big way.

Of all things, what makes celebrated chef Jamie Oliver such a treat on his cooking show is his intimate bond with nature. As he goes around plucking wild mushrooms and gorgeous greens from his expansive kitchen garden to roll out those delectable recipes, you know that's how food is made. No wonder then there is a whole `grow your own' movement taking place across the world with chefs inspiring people to sow edible plants and vegetables in their backyard.

Food backyards and terraces are fast replacing ornamental gardens. It is not chefs alone who are swayed by this edible movement. Apparently, even Michelle Obama, the US First Lady, personally oversees her kitchen garden, laden with spinach, kale, broccoli, fennel, raspberries and blueberries. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has his own vegetable garden and urges school kids to adopt healthy eating habits and learn the importance of vegetable gardening. Nicole Kidman spends hours tending to vegetables and only cooks from her home-grown produce, while Brad Pitt has got his whole family to do gardening on his organic vegetable patch. According to him, it'll help his kids "grow into strong and emotionally-sound individuals".

FREESTYLE GARDENING
This is flexible gardening with no boundaries -you can plant whatever, wherever. In fact, in the US, people are planting fruits, veggies, herbs, and wildflowers in and around their cities, giving out free seeds, and funding community gardens as part of this freestyle movement. Everyone is waking up to the benefits of planting their own food with less or no chemicals! Says Sonia Sharma of Organic Farmer's Development Trust, "We need to build a relationship with food. I have created food gardens wherever possible, growing my own herbs, vegetables and fruits. I can see the desired impact on my body and mind. We hold organic bazaars and workshops for those who want to grow food in their kitchen gardens. The benefits of having your own food garden are tremendous - it improves health, saves money and works as a great stress-buster."

MUCH-NEEDED TLC
The freshness of vegetables enhances your meals. Raw food ex pert Dr Soorya Kaur says, "Organic food is the normal way to feed our body, mind, and spirit. It has rhythms of its own that are in sync with the seasons and help the body function normally. It is easy to grow green vegetables on any rooftop, terrace. All it requires is love, natural seeds, good soil, pots and water. In India, aloe-vera for treating inflammation grows easily on the terrace. Herbs grow easily too, you can grow red capsicum, mustard, coriander, a variety of sprouts."

GROWING TREND
There's a rise in number of people growing their own food. A lot of young people and kids want to grow their food at home and are taking classes in converting the traditional garden into food yard. Says Delhi-based raw food coach Rupinder Kaur, "I live in an apartment with no access to a garden, so I'm limited to using pots. I love to grow, mostly organic and seasonal greens like lettuce, spinach, mustard, coriander, basil, mint, rockets, bokchoy. I'm also a part-time gardener at my kid's school. Children and teachers make fresh salads from my produce.

Ashmeet Kapoor, who owns an organic food company, adds, "We hold workshops for people in rooftop vegetable gardening.

There are so many people who have made this conscious shift for the sake of the environment."
