What makes it special this year is that it falls on the date 3-14-15 ? the sequence of the Pi constant (3.141592653) ? that won't occur for another 100 years. At 9:26:53 am today, scientists and mathematicians around the world will honour the mathematical constant, represented by the Greek letter p. The day was introduced in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw in the San Francisco science museum, and it will celebrate its 27th birthday today.
The Indian connect Greek mathematician and astronomer Archimedes calculated the value of Pi to be between 3.141 and 3.143. While the Chinese figured it out to six digits, it was in India that scientists and mathematicians pegged it at 11 digits around the year 1400 BC.
How it's celebrated The most common celebration across the world on this day involves eating a pie, that has a Pi designed on it. Called a tongue twister 'Pi Day pie', it can be made with anything like a blueberry, chocolate, caramel, strawberry or even a chicken pie. What makes it apt for the celebration is that extra touch of the 'Pi' symbol on the upper crust.
Give a 'High Pi' today! Replace the traditional hand gesture of a 'high five' by using just three fingers instead of all five to give a 'High Pi' today. Most nerds are seen doing that!
Mathematicians speak Anand Poojari, former IITian says, "Celebrating Pi day is not so common among Indians, not even engineering students, since they are known to hate math. It's only among IITians that the day holds significance."
Pratijyut Ghose, an amateur mathematician, says, "Most celebrations on this day involved finding out more and more digits of the constant, since it's an irrational number, its digits never end or repeat. Hence, it is extremely difficult but a fun task to find more digits of Pi (after the decimal point)." High Pi to that!
Pi in pop culture Adapted from the book of the same name, the Oscar-winning Life of Pi directed by Ang Lee was based on a character whose nickname is Pi.
Hollywood film Pi revolves a mathematician working in number theory. His computer churns out a 216-digit number that apparently has some special power and deep significance.
A quick test of genius on TV is to have someone recite Pi to an absurd length. On the show Angel, Fred says: 'I could go to Vegas. Learn to play Black Jack. Memorize four hundred fifty two consecutive digits of Pi, a few hundred measly cards are easy.'
Pi In a river's ratios Pi emerges in the shapes of rivers. Albert Einstein was the first to show this. He used fluid dynamics and chaos theory to show that rivers tend to bend into loops. A river's windiness is determined by its 'meandering ratio,' or or the ratio of the river's actual length to the distance from its source to its mouth. The average meandering ratio of rivers approaches is Pi.
Pi in nature The number crops up in the disk of the sun, the spiral of the DNA double helix, the pupil of the eye, the concentric rings that travel outward from splashes in ponds. Pi also appears in the physics that describes waves, such as ripples of light and sound. It even enters into the equation that defines how precisely we can know the state of the universe, known as Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.
Another celebration Albert Einstein was one of the scientists who proved how Pi appears in nature too, so it's no coincidence that physicists around the world will also celebrate his 136th birthday today, and the 100th anniversary of his paper presentation on the Theory of Relativity.
