The prices of roses up this Valentine’s Day

Impressing your lover will turn out to be a costly affair, especially if you're planning on saying it with flowers. Florists say the build-up to Valentine's Day begins right at the onset of February. The price for a red rose has now gone up to as much as `40, while a single stem of lily will cost you `200.

Florists have put up fixed rates for the 'Valentine Weekend'. Take a look at the rate card before you set out to express your love.

With florists fixing the price for Valentine Weekend, a look at the rate card is quite revealing of the popularity of day in certain areas — Colaba fixes the price of a rose stem at `30, while florists in Malad rate it between `30 to `40.

Roses continue to rule
It is only roses that rule the flower market this day, especially red roses. Close on the heels of roses, are orchids and liliums (lilies) that are also popular choices for bouquets today.

Florists' flower speak
Chandrakant Band, florist from Dadar, says, "Roses have the maximum demand today; people do not even look at any other flower. That's precisely, why we don't stock any other flowers on Valentine's Day."

Santosh Kumar, who has been in the business since the last 15 years, says, "It is only the prices of roses (red roses to be specific), orchids and lilies that soar high during the Valentine month. Other flowers like carnations, sun flowers, etc cost the same."

Preeti Bhagchandani, a florist from Bandra West, adds that rare flowers can cost even more than roses. "Red roses and orchids are the maximum in demand. We usually fall short of them by evening. There are some who like to splurge on rare flowers, and since lilies are known to be exotic, their prices are always more — a stem of lily goes up to ` 100 - `150 on Valentine's."

Bouquets of 25 flowers
Some florists have also laid out a special V-day policy that fixes the number of roses in a basic handheld bouquet. "A basic handheld bouquet includes at least 25 roses, not less than that. However, there are many people who place orders for bouquets with as many as 50 or 100 roses," says Andheri-based florist Bholanath Das.

Say it with colours
Red rose: Deep love and passion
Pink rose: Appreciation and liking
Yellow rose: Friendship and good health
White: New beginnings and forgiveness

What other flowers symbolise
Orchids: Considering their exotic nature, orchids stand for luxury and beauty.
Lilies: Symbolises virtues and eternal love.
