A city-based naval officer, Commander R Upendra, launched his first book. Talking about the book, The Turnouts, a tribute to a distant star, he said that it is a fictional story but much of it is based on his own life.

R Upendra, who has a passion for writing, has been contributing to the magazines published by the Indian Navy. "It was my wife who pushed me further to write a book," said Upendra adding that it took him seven years to complete it. "I was on a train and was looking at the stars when this idea first struck me," said Upendra.

C Sylendra Babu, Additional Director General of Police, coastal security group, the chief guest at the book launch event, said that he had read the book and the best aspect of the story was that it was original. "It is very similar to my story and reminded me of my father," he said.

The book narrates the story of a loving father and the bond he shares with his son. "I could connect with it and there is an instance in the book where the character is unable to meet his ailing father as he was not allowed time off from work. Many of us must have gone through a similar situation," said Sylendra Babu. He also praised the language and writing style, saying he wished more youngsters took to the reading habit.

Readers and critics said that the best part of the book is a letter written by the father to the protagonist in which he states, "This is my house and there is no democracy here!" "The realities of life faced by an IAS officer are nicely brought out in this book," said Vilasavathi, a reader.

R Upendra is a commissioned officer in the Indian Navy since 1993 and is currently appointed in the naval selection board in Coimbatore. The book published by Lead Start Publishing pvt. ltd, Mumbai, is available in several book stores across the country and could be bought online as well.

When asked about the title of the book, Upendra said, "The speeding train shifts tracks on each turnout, oblivious of the turmoil within the child. The book takes us through the emotional transitions the child experiences during a train journey, which is compared to the train switching tracks."
