Book fair artists unite for Hebdo

It's been a little over three weeks since the attack on Charlie Hebdo shook the world. But the tremors can be felt now as the French satirical magazine has already announced it won't release its 1,179th edition tomorrow and another on February 11.

Back home, a rally , on the lines of the republican march in Paris on January 11, might not have attracted as many participants, but city artists are going all out to support the cause. Armed with `sharp' pencils, these artists are making sketches in plenty at the ongoing Kolkata Book Fair. Their answer to world terrorism: the pen is mightier than the sword.

According to Suvra Behara, a young artist at the fair, the same fear -of creativity being attacked -plagues them all. She says, "The January 7 attack only proved that even to laugh in this world, you need to pay a price. It was a dastardly act. With my sketch, I'm expressing solidarity towards artists and cartoonists across the globe." Echoing similar sentiments, another painter, Siddhar tha Mukhopadhyay says, "They can step on our pencils, but won't be able to break them, like they can't break us."

Chitrashilpi & Little Magazine Welfare Society president Bidyut Brahama feels creativity has come under the scanner from time to time. He says, "Be it the Hebdo attack or the ill-treatment of young painters by state powers, art is attacked everywhere. From Maidan's maati they have brought us to these cemented grounds, but all we have been given is dhulo (dust) -to sit on, work and adjust with. Aspiring artists here don't get the privilege of light or space. Isn't this an attack on creativity? But we will continue to put up a fight."

Painter Biplab Dalai adds, " Art is a language and it's up to us to creatively deliver it. To attack creativity is to attack language and if that continues, it won't be long until a deafening silence falls on the world. It will destroy life as we know it."

Crowd, noise, dull lights, dearth of basic supplies, inadequate exhibit area -nothing can stop these magicians with brushes from uniting for art; for Charlie Hebdo. Not surprising then, despite the blaring speakers at the grounds, their message is loud and clear: "We are Charlie Hebdo".
