From two hot selling dark thrillers based on AF-PAK activities - The Eye of The Predator and The Edge of the Machete to a poignant fiction!
I got so engrossed in writing another very dark novel (which will soon see the light someday) that it almost took a toll on me. I wanted a break from my 12 hour job and this dark novel that I was writing. That's when an old memory struck upon me - the story competition I wanted to participate in my school days but could not. I went back to the 'story' I wrote then for the competition and it hit me so hard that I decided to pen down my experience. And that's how A Hundred Lives For You started. There are several such intense scenes which come straight from my memory but a lot of it I also owe to my plum imagination that fails to stop every time I think about a character or a situation.
(The novel states a similar incident where Abhimanyu is not able to participate in the story writing competition even though his teacher believed in his story because of the existing champion of school who tricked her way out with the Principal.)
Abhisar's plum imagination could also create the CIA office in his novel!
I try to expand my imagination every now then and then reproduce it in my stories. I keep thinking over a situation. At one point of time, I wanted to kill my protagonist in A Hundred Lives for You in the middle of the novel but because I related to the character and my imagination was not stopping, I could not do that. My television career has helped me write very visualize-able scenes. When I write, I try to bring in each detail with appropriate emotions.
What writing did to him?
I was eight kilos lighter before I started writing. Once I started, my schedule went for a toss. I was mostly awake at nights, was spending most of my time sitting on the laptop and had a hectic job schedule. I was compromising on my sleep. But it's all worth it! Writing is a great discovery that I discovered late but now it is like food for me.
Abhisar feels that Chetan Bhagat has started targeting his audience!
Irrespective of the fact that people criticize him for his language, Chetan Bhagat has created a space for people who like reading in simple language and interesting plots and are not too much into reading 'classics'. The only thing I have a problem with is that he has ceased to be a writer and has become more of a marketing guru. He has started targeting his audience, which should not be the case. I could not read beyond 10 pages of Half Girlfriend.
What we say about Abhisar...
A Hundred Lives for You is not only a narrative of a political journalist but is also a soul stirring story of a boy who grew amidst the Sikh riots in Delhi. Abhimanyu is vulnerable yet a strong character who comes to life with Abhisar's deep rooted imagination. Though Abhisar says that he wish he was like Abhimanyu but my interaction with him says that Abhisar is Abhimanyu in every way!
