Restaurant Review: Nonya

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 07 Januari 2015 | 18.47

Nonya is a specialty restaurant at Hyatt Ahmedabad offering Chinese, Malaysian, Thai, Japanese and other cuisines.

Decor: Located on the first floor of Hyatt, Nonya is a smart and modern restaurant. Largely contemporary in design, the restaurant has a few design elements that connect to its food specialties. The walls are especially interesting with wood paneling, intricate wooden screens and wood-finished floors. The furniture is also very much in keeping with the design. The restaurant has an outdoor deck which can be booked for special dinners. There is a tea bar at the entrance.

Food: Nonya has takes on various cuisines of East Asia. The Nonyan Vegetable Clear Soup is a house special with tofu, fried potatoes and noodles. For non-vegetarians, the Thai Coconut Prawn Soup and Steamed Meat Ball Soup are good options.

Nonya has an excellent selection of dim sums, including extremely soft and well-made dumplings with a choice of vegetables, prawn, chicken and mushroom fillings. Unlike most other restaurants, the dim sum menu here also has other snacks like steamed buns. The Crispy Mushroom with Scallion has a strong flavour of fermented pepper and you can also request this with chicken. They have good basa fish starters with plum sauce or Indonesian-inspired banana wrapped steamed fish.

The Crispy or Roasted Duck, Lamb in Black Pepper Sauce and Mapo Tofu are pretty good for the mains. This is also one of the few restaurants in Ahmedabad that offer some of the Chinese specialties with pork.

The Thai Red, Green or Yellow Curries (with chicken, prawns or veggies) are also well-made and aromatic, though they lack the crisp and sharp flavours you expect from these curries. They go well with the Jasmine Rice. If you prefer noodles, they have Singapore Rice Noodles with prawns, chicken or vegetables.

For dessert, they have a nice and pleasant Mango Pudding. Like most Chinese restaurants, they also have date pancakes but they are not really outstanding.

Plus and minus
Nonya is one of the few restaurants in Ahmedabad which offers a range of Asian cuisines, including dishes with water chestnuts, asparagus, pork and duck. This combined with its pretty smart interiors makes this a good place for an upmarket dinner. The food is good.
