Interning to prepare for life

College is the one time when you can experiment with anything; hairstyles, clothes — even internships. And while it is mandatory to do an internship to complete graduation for certain courses, today's college students look at it a lot more seriously than as just another task on their to-do list.

Gaining field experience is one reason college students seem kicked about interning. Says Namita Ruparel, a psychology student who's planning to intern at a rehab centre, "Nearly everyone I know is interning. Apart from the experience it gives, it is like a first glance you get into the outside world — a baby step you take towards the career you're planning to pursue."

The fact that internship helps you learn more than in a classroom is an added bonus. Says Anam Mirza, who aspires to be a journalist, "I interned in Delhi, and honestly, I learnt more in one month than I did in the one and a half years in college. Plus, when I had the electronic media exam, I didn't even have to study because I had done everything before hand. In a field like journalism, it's more about practical experience than classroom teaching."

Apart from the experience, they also seek the "discipline of being in office". Bakhita Francis, a mass communication student, explains, "It's good to get into the routine of working, since it will obviously help us settle down in a work culture."

All this goes to show how students are taking internships seriously — down to the way they dress. "Appearance does matter a lot. Whether we like it or not, we do judge others by how they carry and present themselves," Bakhita explains, adding, "If you're working in a corporate environment, it's always better to don formal wear. Apart from making you look professional, you also get little or no unwanted attention."

While most of them look at it as a way to strengthen their professional portfolio, there are some who intern in a field that is totally separate from their course work. Because they want to do everything they can. Take Rahul Gondane for instance. The B Tech student from Geethanjali College of Engineering and Technology is interning as a journalist. "I always wanted to be different. Plus, dabbling in different fields will give me an edge over those who just go to college and come back. I know that there is a lot to learn, so, I'm doing whatever I can. Apart from interning, I also have a start-up firm, which is taking in interns, and I also blog," says Rahul. But isn't this for a better looking CV? "Not really. I'm doing all this because I'm interested."
