Controversial books that were taken off shelves

Critically-acclaimed Tamil writer Perumal Murugan recently said that he would give up writing after protests against his book, Madhorubhagan (or One Part Woman in English).

The book is about a childless couple and how the wife conceives after taking part in an ancient Hindu festival that allows consensual sex between any man and woman. We take a look at some other recent books that faced similar opposition...

Madhorubhagan
Author: Perumal Murugan Year: 2015 Controversy: Some Hindu groups took offence to this book and alleged that Perumal portrayed the Kailasanathar temple in Tiruchengode and its women devotees in bad light. They demanded that the book be banned and sought the author's arrest. Perumal asked publishers to withdraw all his books from the market and announced that he was giving up writing on January 13.

Sahara: The Untold Story
Author: Tamal Bandyopadhyay Year: 2014 Controversy: The book, which is about the biggest crisis faced by Sahara India Pariwar, came under fire after the company moved the Calcutta High Court in December 2013 seeking a stay. Not just that, they even filed a `200-crore defamation suit against Tamal. The stay order was issued in January 2014 and in April, after both parties reached an out-of-court settlement, the book was published with a disclaimer given by Sahara.

The Descent of Air India
Author: Jitendra Bhargava Year: 2014 Controversy: Former aviation minister Praful Patel filed a defamation suit in a Mumbai court against this book, which is an account of how India's national carrier was brought to its knees. The publisher agreed to withdraw all copies of the book and even issued a public apology.

Meendezhum Pandiyar Varalaru
Author: K Senthil Mallar Year: 2014 Controversy: The Tamil Nadu government banned this Tamil book in May 2013 as it felt that it could cause violence and promote discord among communities. The government said that the book claims that a Dalit community, called Pallar, was the original rulers of southern Tamil Nadu.

Dhundi
Author: Yogesh Master Year: 2013 Controversy: Hindu organizations, including the Sri Rama Sene, alleged that this Kannada book contained objectionable material against Lord Ganesha. The author was arrested in August 2013, and was charged under Section 295 A and 298 of the Indian Penal Code.

Such A Long Journey
Author: Rohinton Mistry Year: 2010 Controversy: This 1990 Booker-nominated book was removed from the Bachelor of Arts (English) syllabus of University of Mumbai in October 2010 after protests from Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, the student-wing of the Shiv Sena. They alleged that the book contained anti-Shiv Sena passages and remarks that they considered derogatory to Maharastrians.

The Hindus: An Alternative History
Author: Wendy Doniger Year: 2014 Controversy: The Shiksha Bachao Andolan filed a civil suit against the publisher in 2011 for alleged inaccuracies, libel and plagiarism. The organization also alleged that the book focused on sex and eroticism. In early 2014, publishers of the book agreed to recall and destroy all copies of the novel.

Santsurya Tukaram and Loksakha Dnyaneshwar
Author: Anand Yadav Year: 2014 Controversy: A Pune magistrate ordered the copies of both these books be destroyed in June 2014. The complainant had alleged that the references made in both the books were baseless and were defamatory to Tukaram and Dnyaneshwar. The publishers have defended the book.

Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India
Author: Joseph Lelyveld Year: 2011 Controversy: This biographical book suggested that Mahatma Gandhi was bisexual. The book was banned in Gujarat in March 2011. The then law minister, Veerappa Moily, wanted to ban the book nationwide, but this was ruled out after Gandhi's grandsons — Tushar Gandhi, Rajmohan Gandhi and Gopalkrishna Gandhi — opposed it.

The Red Sari
Author: Javier Moro Year: 2010 Controversy: This unauthorized biography of Congress President Sonia was originally published in October 2010 in Spanish. The English version was not allowed to be released in Indian the same year, which is when the Congress-led UPA was in power. Although there was no official ban back then, plans to publish the book were stalled by protests and threats of lawsuits. The book was finally released in India this month.
