Book: The Second Coming
Author: Shubha Menon

Meet Mini - an average Indian woman, who is creative, independent, has a progressive career, is young in mind and heart, believes in fairytales but unfortunately is married! Her work requires her to think about extreme romantic nuances and plan an exotic nuptial. But her personal life pulls her to mundane routines, not at all romantic meetings and a total 'sicko' husband conventionally named Shyam (to reiterate the fact that her husband is a total sucker, she has saved his name in her phone as 'Sicko Shyam').

Mini's spontaneous mind is looking for that perfect man who will make her feel like a princess before the menopause arrives and takes away the sensation of all her dreams. Enters Rustom - the Greek God of her fairytale! He is perfect but he is not hers. They fall prey to the lusty attraction and which Mini believes is going to see a happy ending!

...What she felt for Rustom was true love, barring the few instances of lust which Mini liked to believe, were an aberration she intended to correct. Given time, Rustom would respond to her with true love. This story was going to get its happily-ever-after ending.

What binds you to the book is that debut writer Shubha Menon leaves no space for your mind to give any imaginary moulds to the characters - she just constructs them to the minutest of details. Though the story might read a little cliche, it does not loosen on its grip and the credit entirely goes to the storytelling skills of the author.

A smooth read that has rib-tickling instances, one realises that this story also reflects the attitude of working couples who are lost in concrete jungles of their offices, and are willing to work overnight for professional relationships but forget to concentrate a little bit on their personal relationships. The fairytales that we tell our children could be at guilty when we, on the contrary, expect them to deal with the labour of love as they grow older.

There is no happy 'Ending' in real life because life keeps moving! And so does Mini's life when she realizes that her fairytale looks better with Shyam who takes care of Mini in an unsaid manner.

Shubha captures the true essence of a married relationship when Mini lands in Mumbai without Shyam to feel completely lost: Mini felt lost and apprehensive. What if Mumbai office hadn't sent anyone to pick her up? How would she find her way to the hotel? If only Shyam was with her. He always took care of cabs, luggage and stuff like that.

This is how marriage is - takes care of you in the most unsaid manner, is mundane but is the only resort to give you mental peace!
The Second Coming is a hilarious account of what goes through a woman's mind as she falls in love, forges relationships and makes a marriage work. All women want their marriages to be a fairytale but forget that fairytales don't happen, they have to be created.

My Take: This book is a quick and a quirky read. It is straight forward and on-your-face reality for everyone looking for that extra spice in their wedding! But, if we put a little serious intent, this book will give you all the answers to why a man or a woman will ever try to cheat and yet realize that cheating does no good to your most intimate relationship.
