NOT MARGARITA, BUT `CUCUMBERITA'!
So what are the top flavours here? The `watermelontini' for one, with pureed watermelon and some limeinfused coconut water instead of vodka. Or even the `cucumberita' that has just chopped cucumber, lime juice and a dash or organic honey! Boring? No way! Says mixologist Shatbhi Basu, " A lot of people don't drink or choose not to, and for those people, this is great alternative. And folks are getting really wacky and creative with choices -like a refreshing Fresh Fruit Sangria with exotic fruits such as green apple kiwi, pomegranate, mixed with fresh mint and a favourite juice topped with a fizzy drink instead of the usual wine. The Chatka Mary that I came up with in Goa can also be served without vodka. Instead of vodka, add more guava juice spiked with fresh lime juice, hot chilli sauce and a touch of worcestershire, and you can give it a rim of salt and red chilli powder. Again, what is quite easy to make and popular on home party menus is a good creamy drink Choconut Madness with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, peanut butter, cream and crushed ice. Another take on the traditional mojito is to replace the alcohol with mint, ginger ale and flavour it with peachapricot crush." Here's what else makes for a healthy party sip...
WHEATGRASS, KALE SHOTS MOST POPULAR
"Earlier, people would not think twice about tanking in alcohol in spurts, but today , you see a more healthy set in society , doing the same thing with healthy replacements," says whole foods nutritionist Kajal Bhatia.
"What's really popular is the green power-up -which includes `potent energisers' like spirulina, wheatgrass and exotic kale. These have become the talk of the town and are enjoyed by many , including youngsters. A very small dose, just 30 ml, of this concoction -had individually or blended -is dense and rich in iron and enzyme infusions and releases enough energy to keep you moving, agile and light on the dance floor." Bhatia adds that almond shots are also a huge draw this year. "These are made with almond milk and mixed with sabza and dates. It's blended together as an energy boostercum-dessert shot," she adds.
TRIED CHIA SEEDS MOCKTAILS YET?
Superfoods like chia seeds works wonders not only for its protein content, but also for its digestive benefits. And these are perfect accompaniments in the glass as one tends to indulge in calorie dense foods at this time. Try chia seeds in your kokum juice, kiwi drink or even khus mocktail with some lime," she suggests.
`TEA'SE ME BABY!
Tea cocktails and mocktails are also a huge draw this season. City-based tea connoisseur Rupali Ambegaonkar affirms, "Fresh tea and fruit blends are also in demand as people like to have that natu ral taste with benefits too," she says, adding, "What's popular now at brunches and spa parties, is the `Sparkling Strawberry tea' made by blending straw berries -which are in season -boiling them with straw berry puree and lime. This is cooled and sparkling water is added to it. I have also seen people enjoy a `Teatotallers Sangria' made with a blend of oranges, lemons, seasonal fruits, unsweetened green tea. Just add a mix of cranberry , peach and pineapple juices to it for taste," she adds.
SKINNY COCKTAILS TOO...
There are also `diabetic friendly mocktails', called `Skinny Cocktails', with unsweetened fruit juices, grapefruit, etc. Instead of a Bloody Mary try a `Tangy Tomato' with just tomato juice, lime juice and some Worcentershire sauce.
