Halve your cheese
What makes a slice of pizza delectable is its cheese fillings. "The next time you place your order, ask the chef to halve the cheese," says nutritionist Gauthami Ghotala, "Low calorie varieties of cheese are available in the market. You can also try mozzarella, parmesan, low-fat cottage cheese or cheddar cheese in your pizza. You will be amazed to find out that despite reducing the portion, you still feel satisfied."
Top it right
When it comes to opting for toppings, choosing green leafy vegetables is recommended. "Avoid, or at least reduce, processed meat toppings and add meat with lean protein instead. Choose from a wide option of veggies like capsicum, spinach, zucchini, avocado and broccoli," tells Saourav Suman, a chef with a leading pizzeria. He adds, "Also, spicing up your slice with red chilli flakes, black pepper or some hot sauce helps you moderate the amount of pizza you eat. Tell your chef to use tomato pizza sauce to enjoy additional benefits."
Thinner the better
The pizza dough is basically made from refined white flour. Not only does it not offer you any nutritional benefits, it also increases your calorie intake and raises your insulin levels. So, opt for thin crust pizzas, preferably made of wheat or whole grain base. Also, say no to stuffed crusts and keep the base simple.
Choose your appetisers wisely
Complement your pizza by ordering nutritional appetisers. Gauthami says, "Instead of choosing cheese garlic bread, French fries and potato wedges, order a green salad or some vegetable soup. These will fill up your stomach in a healthy way and ensure you don't overindulge on pizzas."
Think twice before you Sip
Which drink goes well with your pizza? The obvious answer would be fizzy sodas and soft drinks. But, you must be aware that sodas are not only an unhealthy options, but also add more calories. The best beverage that you can pair up with your pizza would be water. Sipping on some clear water will fill you up as well. You can also opt for freshly squeezed juices minus the soda.
Share your pie
The best way to ensure you don't binge on pizza is to share your pie with your friends. Saourav says, "Make sure what you order can be shared between your buddies. Also, instead of ordering several small pizzas, opt for a large one so that you can keep a check on the quantity of your intake."
Avoid pizzas for dinner
Having pizzas few hours before sleep is a bad idea. Gauthami says, "There are chances it might lead to indigestion and bloating the next day. So, have your pizza for lunch instead, so you have ample times to burn off the calories."
