While asking out anyway is a delicate subject, asking out a colleague could be even more difficult as there is a lot at stake if things turn sour. But not everything delicate is difficult. If you do it the right way, you can surely come out with a date.
This is a situation where you know the girl to some capacity. But the situation is tricky because if you get a 'no' for an answer, you will still have to be around her, face her and even talk to her regarding work.
So start out casually. Strike up an interesting conversation which revolves around anything but work. Try and gauge her interest areas and once you know a few, talk to her about them.
It would be alright to take a couple of days talking and then ask her, very casually, for an evening out. Make sure you find out if she is free that evening before you ask her out because once it is postpone, you will have to go through the process all over again.
And if you get a positive nod from her, take her out for a casual date, nothing expensive or formal. You need a casual atmosphere for her to open up to you and make things more relaxed. Only if you get to third or fourth date that you can take her for that expensive dinner.
