Yoga instructor Priya Pankaj says, "Yoga for kids is all about learning and exploring with joy. Yoga asanas and pranayama (breathing techniques) calm their mind and help kids to improve their concentration and perform day-to-day activities better. It also works as a good break from their regular indoor activities which makes them hyper and restless. We have also customised certain asanas and worked on breathing patterns to train kids who have a learning disability."
YOGA AND STRESS We may not realise it, but children do get affected by the speed with which their parents expect them to lead their life. A lot of events in a child's life may appear to be normal to grown-ups but are stressors, like a transfer of parents from one place to another, or shifting of schools and making new friends. These things leave a deep impact on their little heads. Psychologist Seema Hingorrany says, "These days, we are seeing a rise in young children with complaints of stress, anxiety, emotional disturbances and low concentration. The reasons can be academic pressure, efficiency to cope with parental pressures, juggling between too many activities and an improper diet routine. Many children also come from backgrounds where parents are just about to separate or their divorce is in the pipeline, which does impact the child psychologically. Dysfunctional families too cause a lot of turmoil and conflict in a child's mind, leading to mental health concerns. Yoga often helps to combat these pressures and induce the feel-good hormone, endorphin."
To this yoga instructor, Rajnish Mishra adds, "The best way to manage stress in kids is through regular exercising, especially yoga since it works on the body and mind and brings about complete wellness. Kids needs to breathe in fresh air and a little bit of yoga before their exams can do magic."
YOGA AND DISCIPLINE By doing yoga, kids can be aware and disciplined. Aarti Kapur Singh, a mother of a six-and-a-half-year-old, says, "My son has been learning yoga in school for about two years. He is not only more active but I have also noticed that he is less hyper on the days he does yoga. Sometimes, when he is in the park and his friends aren't around, he is happy to be just by himself and practice the asanas. Not just that, if ever I tell him that my back or knee or shoulder is paining, he will promptly start demonstrating an asana that I should do and it does help. My son was prone to colic. But I have noticed that ever since he has started doing padmasana, his digestion is much better and he eats without fuss."
Kids who are hyperactive need to do a lot of physical activity and yoga can be a bright way to help them move in a positive direction. It's a great way to gain awareness of their bodies and surroundings.
ENHANCES CONFIDENCE IN KIDS Yoga enhances confidence in kids. It teaches awareness about the present moment. Kids learn to value time and become more aware in life. Yoga teaches them to be focused. The lessons that kids learn in yoga classes makes them more confident about their potential and perform better academically. Asanas help them to connect with their inner self. "Yoga is like a journey of a lifetime and the earlier you take it up, the better it is," adds Rajnish Mishra.
