From being a precursor of self-obsession, the much-talked-about selfie is now foraying into spreading awareness about social causes like animal rights, education for the girl child and more. Hyderabad Times explores the trend.

Looking into the camera, gazing at your own visage, and click! Then it gets posted on social media where the rest of the world can look at it and admire — that's the world of selfies. Today, they have become an integral part of our lives. In fact, a video titled Every Selfie Addict Girl in the World is currently trending on social media, which has garnered more than 5.5 lakh hits in just one week! But selfies don't always mean self-obsession. These days, actors, social activists and the common man are using it as a means to spread awareness.

Take for example an exhibition of 'selfies' slated to open in the city in October. This exhibition hopes to raise awareness on animal rights. City models posed for selfies atop some hi-rises, with messages on placards calling for people to be sensitive towards animals. Talking about the initiative, Kaali Sudheer, who calls himself a 'selfie-addict', says, "Selfies are a rage and almost everyone clicks themselves. People are able to connect with them easily. It is also a visually interesting concept. So we thought of doing this 'selfie exhibition' to raise awareness for the cause of animal rights. It'll grab the right amount of eyeballs, especially among the youth."

Another selfie 'cause' that's trending these days is #Selfies4School. This initiative asks people to click a selfie, post it on social media and in return, 10 girls will get to go to school. Started by an international human rights foundation, the initiative has garnered hundreds of selfies including celebrities like John Abraham, Esha Gupta, Raima Sen etc. Explaining the idea, Sonali Khan, from the human rights organisation promoting this cause, had said in an interview, "It is an interesting way to engage people and spread awareness for the cause. If someone is donating a selfie, it means the person is aware of the issue and if something happens around them, he/she will take action."

However, the first campaign pertaining to 'selfies for a cause' was the #NoMakeupSelfie, which started a few months ago. This was done to spread awareness about breast cancer. Apart from international actors, Indian celebs like Trisha, Shruti and Shriya too went the no make-up selfie route.

And not just celebs, the common man too is using the selfie to put a smile on someone's face. A group of more than 50 students from a city college went out in groups to various parts of the city over the weekend, with an aim to spread some joy. These youngsters asked people to get selfies clicked with them, asked about their 'happy moments' and gave them balloons, small smiley balls, chocolates and cards with happy messages. Talking about the initiative, Nirat Attri, a third year student, explains, "We just wanted to spread some smiles. And since the 'selfie' is something that people are able to connect with easily, we thought we would click pictures with people and spread the cheer. Selfies are very popular among youngsters, so most people were happy to get clicked with us. Also, it forms an instant connect."

But do these campaigns really help? Kaali says, "Millions of dollars are spent to raise awareness about social causes. Something like this doesn't involve any money. Good or bad, it creates some buzz about the cause, and that's what is needed."
