Give your festive attire a boost by incorporating trends from western wear this Diwali. We give you eight looks to take you through all the occasions

Embellished suit: This is a daring look only men with tonnes of confidence can pull off. A tailored three-piece suit in navy blue, white, maroon or brown, baring intricate golden embroidery on the cuffs, lapels and edges, spells decadent elegance. Substitute a button-down shirt with a zippered one to channel the sports luxe trend. Formal patent leather shoes will complete the look.

Regal and rustic: The dhoti is a piece of Indian clothing that transcends time. Give it a modern flavour this season by teaming it with an embroidered jacket. Black and gold is a winning combination. Pick a dhoti with a golden border. Wear a jacket with gold zari work over a collared shirt and tie to create a three-piece ensemble that spells regal and rustic at the same time.

Nehruvian man: The Nehru jacket has become a top pick for fashionable men who want to show off their Indianness, yet retain a sense of modernity. Pick a printed one in a bright colour. Let the kurta underneath it have a sheer fabric, to avoid feeling stuffy. Block printed pants are perfect fusion wear material for this neo Indian look.

Golden swan: Diwali is a season of lights and gold. Instead of succumbing to the craze for shiny over-the-top golden weaves, recreate it with a short layered sherwani in golden yellow with a marble mosaic print. The fabric could be the ever breathable cotton. Two trends to add to this look are white linen trousers and tan brogues.

Tailored sheen: Jackets are popping up in various avatars on the international ramp. Steal the design idea from the ramps at Milan and New York fashion weeks for your own fusion jacket in printed Indian textiles, but with a structured cut. Throw it over a pastel kurta instead of a dark one for a cheery feel and silky pyjamas matching the metallic shade of the jacket.

Deconstructed kurta: A take-off on the deconstructed jacket, this look is for the bohemian man who has a little bit of an artist and wanderer in him. Have your tailor stitch additional asymmetrical folds onto a loose kurta. Use techniques like piping to add subtle details. Loose cropped pants in a darker shade, a silver cuff on your wrist and leather mojris on your feet will finish off the boho look.

Asian appeal: The fashion world is going gaga over everything Japanese, specially kimono pants that has found its way into casual and formal lines. Bring this trend into a layered festive fusion look. A metallic waistcoat over a sheer kurta and pastel shirt in the same colour scheme are simple yet non-stuffy. Make a statement by leaving one side of the sheer piece untucked.
