With Lauren Bacall's demise, we have lost one of the last fashion icons of an era gone by. Here are a few style secrets of the extraordinary women who defined Hollywood

With the death of the sultry and smoky voiced Lauren Bacall on August 12, we lost a style icon in the truest sense of the word. Lauren was one of the most prolific fashion icons of the 40s and 50s, owing to her effortless glamour, timeless bob and smouldering stare. Bacall, wife of screen legend Humphrey Bogart, believed `you shouldn't have to do too much to clothes, just wear them'. Big collars, sizeable topcoats and big clean-cut capes were her all-time favourites. For evenings, draped gowns and nipped-in waists, that were so prevalent during that era, were Bacall's go-to looks. Playful yet fiesty, her style was all about minimal grace.

Despite dating back over 60 years, her gently curled bob is still one of the most copied hairstyles. We decode the styles of some of the legendary ac tresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood, for that was a time when sex appeal and subtle sophistication came hand in hand; when glamour was synonymous with being a woman; and when being a woman was celebrated more than being a girl.

Rita Hayworth
No one made the 1940s as racy as Rita did with her diaphanous cut gowns and empowering shoulder detailing; all this with thigh high slits. Controlled androgyny is best symbolised by her choice of designs.Blood And Sand showcased her as a femme fatale in elegant evening wear, whereas in You'll Never Get Rich, her wardrobe gave us an ultimate guide to the 40s casual chic. Her $60,000 wardrobe in Gilda was the premium ticket to styledom. Her opulent gowns with exquisite embroidery and modern cuts made her the style icon forever.

Sophia Loren
Her quirky choices of prints, bold and vibrant colours and eccentric styling with turbans, hats and chunky faux jewels made this Italian bombshell stand out in the stream of elegance. Her electrifying personality reflected in her daring deep cuts and body-hugging dresses. Signature big hair and defined winged eyes completed her look. Her child-like verve with lethal feminine dressing made her a timeless style icon.

Ava Gardner
She was the pin-up extraordinaire. She carried every beach look with playful zest and quirky oomph. Her celluloid style spoke of casual glamour. She was the queen of resort wear - her pedal pushers, knotted shirts, high-waist shorts, bitsy bikinis, knit blouses and hot shorts were to die for. With fun dresses and the pattern-on-pattern trend, she made casual day dressing more fun than her contemporaries, who were trying hard in gowns.

Ingrid Bergman
Refusing to toe Hollywood's narrow-minded idea of beauty (she refused to pluck her eyebrows or cap her teeth), Bergman had a classic androgynous style, embodying a more modern woman. From tailored suits paired with sheer scarves and wide brimmed hats to classic khaki trench coats, pencil skirts cut just below the knee and statement neck laces, the Scandinavian beauty quickly became known for her classic sense of style. She favoured stripes and minimal make-up. Her aesthetic was unfussy, accented more so in her accessories.

Grace Kelly
Like her name, she made everything and anything look graceful. The princess of Monaco gave us a lifelon tutorial in dressing princely on a limited budget `Feminity' and `Elegance' were words she never ditched; this translated her every look into a modern reference of ladylike dressing.Billowing skirts with button-down shirts, off-shoulder drape tops and timeless sheath dresses were her style building blocks. The powder blue gown from her movie To Catch A Thief was iconic. Her real-life fairy tale wedding gown was a strong reference point for Kate Middleton's illustrated royal wedding dress.

Greta Garbo
The supreme pioneer of androgynous dressing during the golden age of cinema, she made men-like dressing fashionable. Her legacy was further extended by Marlene but she was the one who inspired women to sport those roomy trousers and silk button-down shirts. She made masculine-cut jackets with thumping shoulder pads acceptable. An oversized shirt and pant with a tie was her biggest gift to the fashion world.

Trench, cloche hat and big sunglasses were trends she started way before the crazy paparazzi culture.

Marilyn Monroe
She epitomises Hollywood glamour at its cheekiest best. Marilyn transformed sub-urban American classics into vintage must-haves.From the classic sequinned gown, which she wore to wish the president JFK to the blowing white pleated dress she sported in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch; she has given us some of the most iconic fashion moments.

Elizabeth Taylor
She can aptly be given the `the old school seductress' title. Her mystical charm made millions go crazy over her perfect looks. When it came to style, Elizabeth Taylor was fearless. The diamonds, the hair, the cleavage: she rocked it every where she went. In her younger days, she preferred plunging necklines with straps that slipped off her shoulders, her hair like a dark cloud around her thickly made-up eyes. With age, she got bolder and tight miniskirts, elaborate headpieces, feather boas and bright blue eyeshadow became her favourites.

Marlene Dietrich
She is the Great Dane of androgynous dressing. She showed how women don't need frills, laces and thigh-high slits to look sexy. She transformed the staple men's silhouette into a supreme must-have for every power dresser.

She gave us the lady tuxedo. Her choice of hats, shoes, hair and her attitude perfectly collaborated to create the cross-dressing genre.Films Shanghai Express and Desire have laid an eternal style foundation for her.

Audrey Hepburn
She is someone who taught us a million fashion lessons. In Breakfast At Tiffany's, she acquainted us with the power of pearls and the crucial necessity of LBD dressing. In Sabrina, she taught us how to dress opulently without looking like a Christmas tree. And in My Fair Lady, she showed us how to carry stripes, lace and bows -simultaneously -with ease and glamour. Who can forget her carefree casual wardrobe in Roman Holiday; till date, they are an inspiration to stylish travellers. Her tag team with Hubert de Givenchy and Balenciaga gave us some epic fashion moments of minimal grandeur. Her pixie haircut gave girls a feeling of freedom, the confidence to be themselves and the reason to celebrate femininity.
