Employers must recharge their workplace by giving smart rewards in order to maintain the productivity of their employees

In today's competitive business environment, when giving consistent monetary rewards to employees may not always be a feasible idea, managers need to constantly find ways to keep their workforce motivated. Appropriate rewards, whether tangible or intangible, when given at the right time, tend to recharge the workplace and create a healthy office environment. Here are a few tips to help bosses reward their employees with simple, yet effective, incentives, which go beyond the monetary benefits they receive:

It's all about a pat
According to the famous author Spencer Johnson, a simple pat on the back by a manager can motivate a worker for a long time. Employees don't always want to be gratified with cash or kind for their work, leaving many options open for managers and CEOs who wish to reward their employees. It can be as simple as planning a surprise team picnic or creating a hall of fame containing the recent achievements of an employee. "I have worked with various mid-size companies during my career. One in particular, an industrial moulds company, had a unique way to boost employee morale and productivity. They would make a photo collage of a particular project and display the pictures of all the employees who have contributed towards the same. This way, they acknowledged the efforts of every employee involved in a project," says Sanjeev Desai, motivator and trainer, Create to Lead, a corporate training company.

However, while the above example may seem a simplistic one, a number of companies go out of their way to reward employees. Adds Desai, "A city-based interior designing firm finds out the likes and the interests of their employees and would create avenues for employees to indulge in their favourite activities. Such rewards make employees feel valued and wanted." There are many intangible ways in which employees can be rewarded too; arranging for a team lunch and appreciating their efforts is one of the most tried and tested and ideal ways to go about it. Disha Parekh, designer, Fashion Works, shares, "A great motivators for me is being acknowledged for my work. One of the biggest morale booster for me was when my company's CEO announced that my design had been a best-seller."

The right tag
A befitting `tag' to fondly refer to an employee that in some way highlights their specialty, or invaluable effort, also changes the work atmosphere for the better. "Most employees of one of my digital advertising client, have unique taglines that bring their contribution to the company to light. For example, if an employee has managed to salvage a project during crisis, then he she is given the tag of a `Life Saver'. If an employee achieves more than his her targets, he she is named a `Superman' or a `Superwoman'. This creates a positive atmosphere and encourages employees to increase their output" informs corporate trainer Keval Shah, Cross Roads Communications.

Time matters
Not many employees enjoy a simple reward for an achievement that has long been reduced to a memory of the past, a timely distribution of small rewards can help managers get the best out of their employees. "Bosses regularly treat their employees teams to a modest pizza party to commemorate their efforts, but doing this in a timely manner greatly helps subordinates improve their morale and efficiency." says Mansavi Jain, corporate trainer and CEO, Beyond the Boundaries. Adds Jain, "The mantra here is, the earlier you acknowledge efforts, the better motivation level are."

Customised rewards
Reward employees with a gift of their choice. Companies can set aside a budget and allow employees to choose from a range of rewards options. Such rewards could range from watches, customised stationery and recognition kits that lists their achievements, to note cards, rewards coupons, award certificates, etc.
