Hide your face in a Facekini

You might have to rephrase the term 'looking a perfect 10' when it comes to the beach, for if a new fad has its way, your curves might still up the hotness quotient, but your face certainly will not!

Meet the one accessory that can be a skin delight but a put-off for others. It's the Facekini, a full head mask that covers the face — a la a bank robber — to protect it from the sun's rays, leaving slits for the eyes, nose and mouth. Local women in China are wearing it to protect themselves from jellyfish stings, algae and the sun's ultraviolet rays. Pretty it is not. But it's being hailed as everything from the 'Beachwear of the future' to 'The new skin protector' and more. And as per reports, the fashion-conscious West is looking to bring it into style. Considering the harsh climate back home, is it the need of the hour here too?
Quite useful back home: Studies have revealed that exposure to harmful UV rays are a cause of wrinkles, crow's feet and other signs of ageing, leading even to skin cancer. In fact, 80% of such ageing is a result of UV rays. Says skin professional, Dr Rashmi Shetty, "I think it's a great idea. You can take the Facekini along when you swim outdoors at a pool or on your beach vacation. In a country like ours, it can be a protection from pollution, dust, etc, which have a detrimental effect on the skin colour, tone and texture. UVA and B rays can be very harmful and even speed up the ageing process.

When I was in Vietnam a few months ago, I was shocked to see practically everyone with their faces covered in such a mask, in different materials. You can adapt it here by wearing the Facekini anywhere — to the poolside or while going out, or even riding to work on a two-wheeler, as women have anyway been covering their faces with scarves . Now, maybe they could try a stylish Facekini."
