Restaurant Review: Lavash (Mediterranean)

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 15 Agustus 2014 | 18.47

Lavash. The very name conjured up images of a very large, soft flatbread. I love its Persian wholesomeness, and couldn't wait to get my teeth into the Chennai version.

Decor
The blue stenciled motifs against a sand coloured background somewhat reminds one of the clear blue Mediterranean sea. The place is crowded with corporate lunchers. A large space, with well-appointed tables, Lavash has sofas against walls making the seating comfortable. The lanterns on the tables and the wall decor add authenticity and reflect detail.

Food
Coriander pesto can make all the difference to a simple roasted tomato soup. It is hot, fresh and tasty in a different sort of way. I have a fabulous mezze platter, which despite the variety, it is light and stomach-friendly. The moistness of the chicken harissa is impressive. It is well-marinated and perfectly balanced. Next, I sample the charmoula-marinated grilled prawns with homemade gnocchi. While I love the gnocchi, the prawns could be better. Next up is the thin-crust vegetarian pizza zingara, whose chicken counterpart is called sardinia. It is flavourful and the crust is really thin: just thick enough to hold all the delicious toppings together.

For dessert, I dig into some panna cotta. One bite later, I'm willing to let it go. Instead, I polish off the Lavash special chocolate with white chocolate sauce.

Pluses and minuses
Lavash is a new restaurant. It is all set to please, and is doing things right. The price is affordable and the ingredients are authentic. They are about to start their combo lunches. This obviously gives diners a taste of their choicest dishes at a reasonable cost. While I could sample their crisp Lavash sticks, I could not eat the soft, large bread I was visualizing.
