The fasting, prayers and introspection of the Ramadan days culminates with Eid al-Fitr or Feast of Breaking the Fast, the most revered occasions for Muslims all over the world. On this pious day people make many delicacies, wear new clothes and elders give gifts to children popularly known as Eidi. However, what makes Eid and even the Ramadan days stand so special are the famous culinary traditions of the festival, such as preparation of Biryani, Kheer, Zarda, Custard and many other such delicacies.
These preparations though very delectable are high in calories and are considered unhealthy from a fitness perspective. Since richness in food is the focal point of Eid preparations, many delicacies can be made tasteful and special by flavoring it with the king of all nuts - 'Almonds'.
The vitamin E, monounsaturated fat, magnesium, and antioxidants found within these nuts are important nutrients that may contribute to almonds' reputation as a heart healthy snack. Almonds, while do not have cholesterol themselves, have the effect of reducing LDL (bad cholesterol) without impacting HDL (good cholesterol)[i], when included in a healthy diet. They are rich in the antioxidant-vitamin E, high in fibre, and are also a good source of protein, magnesium, copper, phosphorous and riboflavin. In other words, almonds are nuts, dense in nutrients and can provide energy throughout the day. They are also helpful for those who are wary of their waistline, as these nuts give a feeling of satiety. Choosing a handful of almonds between meals can be a nutritious way to combat cravings and may help prevent you from reaching for other snack options higher in calories and nutrient-poor.
This Eid people can treat their guests with nutritious almonds which can be served in a many ways, for example they can be served roasted, blanched, chocolate coated etc. People can even gift the children in their families' almonds as their Eidi, to epitomize their blessings and wishes for long term good health.
So come this Eid, make almonds an integral part of not only the celebrations but also your daily life and regale in the jamborees of Eid with good health and zest.
