More than six decades after India attained Independence, the humble khadi — symbolic of a non-violent revolt against the British by Mahatma Gandhi — has seen a radical change in its appeal. An integral part of the Indian cottage industry, it has come a long way from being just the "freedom" fabric and is now considered as fashionable as anything else. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has often been spotted sporting colourful khadi outfits, has been termed the most stylish Indian politician, which says a lot about the impact of khadi and its acceptance worldwide. And it's not only politicians who wear this fabric; youngsters too are making it a part of their wardrobes these days.
Designers are also not far behind in taking inspiration from the weaves of the fabric. Khadi has made many appearances on the ramp in the past couple of seasons, with many a designer experimenting with indo-western silhouettes in khadi.
You can make the fabric a part of your life in a fun way. Here are a few examples of how you can incorporate khadi clothes a part of your wardrobe...
The six yards: Saris are also being designed in khadi now and there is a lot of variety — from the pure khadi kind to the silk khadi variety.
When styled well with a contemporary choli, a khadi sari can be great comfort wear for office too
The Modi Way: Take a cue from the prime minister — add half-sleeved khadi kurtas and churidar-kurtas with finely-tailored Nehru jackets to your wardrobe.
And note that the current Prime Minister of India doesn't shy away from trying a variety of colours either.
Khadi tops: Khadi tops can be sported as formal and casual wear, depending on what you team them with. These can be worn with jeans, formal pants or even skirts. Take your pick from the plain kind or those with embroidery.
Sporty kurtas: This works for men and women. Opt for a khadi kurta that can be teamed with either a pair of denims or cotton pyjamas. For footwear, opt for a pair of Kolhapuri chappals that will lend you an ethnic yet contemporary look.
Dupattas galore: A khadi dupatta is a must-have in everyone's wardrobe. Jazz up your simple cotton kurta look with one of these dupattas, but make sure that your kurta is in a solid colour. These dupattas can be worn at various occasions.
Khadi for teens: Even children can include this fabric in their wardrobes in the form of skirts, pants or jackets. Not only are these new silhouettes comfortable, they are quite stylish too.
