How did it happen? Heels are so last season. Get on with the sneakers, girls!" exclaimed luxury professional Roasie Ahluwalia on her Facebook page, while on her recent trip to London, as she saw high-end shoe brands stuff their shelves with colourful, chic sneak ers. From profes sionals to trendy students, everyone strutted the streets in comfort able yet stylish sneakers. She isn't the only one swearing by the athletic footwear this season. Available in different fabrics, sizes, lengths and designs, sneakers seem to be the new footwear fetish of popular brands all over the world. Shoe designer Swati Mehrotra believes staid sneakers are emerging as a hot trend because of the . changing needs of urban women.
"Women today are always on the go d and need to accomplish a lot in a day. Comfortable shoes that allow agility k and don't cause the ankle or heel to k and don't cause the t ache are the need of the hour," she observes. Flat-soled hee sneakers in leather or suede that look like loafers are her favourite options for a semi-formal look, while she suggests sneakers with wedge heels for casual outings.
Avoid faux pas
However, there's a thin line that separates making a fashion statement and committing a blunder when it comes to sneakers. Designer Nitin Bal Chauhan says active sportswear shoes, designed for a specific sport should be avoided as daily wear.
Colourful sportswear when paired well with ankle-length pants or denims is a great way to prep up even semi-formal wear. He suggests, "A trainer with a thick sole is best suited for the treadmill. To be chic, wear casual sneakers in colours and different lace styles, fastening/closure styles, variations in their tongue sizes, anklets with padding and quilting."
Fashion designer Pallavi Mohan suggests pairing flat-soled sneakers with shorts or pencil-fit denims.
"Never pair sneakers with a loosely-fitted or baggy lower. Similarly, wear sneakers with sporty, fitted and above-the-knee length dresses rather than with loose chiffon or georgette ones," she says.
