Restaurant review: Ottimo - Cuciana Italiana

Understated yet luxurious, the restaurant wears its confidence with an elan that comes from a very strong foundation in food, overseen by Chef Massimo, who has been in the kitchens since he was an eleven-year-old. He possesses an instinctive genius that no books can teach.

Decor
A corridor leads me into the restaurant's main space, where a huge kitchen livens up the scene. Tables surround this vibrant, fascinating space.

Ottimo's clarity is in its rather muted decor of beige, cream, marble and wood, allowing the colours from the food to take centre stage, in a brilliant stroke of interior design genius.

Food
All design fascination fades into the background as I bite into my thin and crisp pizza focaccia. I could eat it all, but promptly drop my second piece mid-bite when the carpaccio de salmone arrives. The salmon brings with it the taste of the Norwegian sea and I'm totally floored. Here, food is the hero, I think for the zenth time, as I hopelessly watch a platter loaded with goodies placed before me and know I'm going to eat it all. Milky, deep fried and breaded goat cheese dwells on my palate, offsetting the saltiness from olives. Non vegetarians must try the capesante con pepe verde — pan seared scallops. They are chewy yet soft and perfectly seasoned.

Just as I'm about to voice the observation that restaurants these days are paying more attention to the starters, my main course arrives. In front of me is the most delicious cappellini al tonno fresco aglio-olio-peperoncino. I don't even try pronouncing it, but, in English, it means angel hair pasta topped with seared tuna. All my misgivings from the past, of bland angel hair pasta, are dispelled with one forkful of the white stuff. I love how a sprinkling of cheese goes so well with the cappellini and tuna.

For dessert, I straightaway go for the pannacotta, loving every spoonful of its rich, creamy smoothness, with a touch of tangy sweetness from the berry sauce. The tiramisu, though, is a tad too sweet for me.

Pluses and minuses
A different kind of ambience and a live kitchen had me hooked. The food wins hearts via taste buds. This is not a place for a quiet romantic dinner as it can get quite noisy — Ottimo is almost always packed to capacity.
