Monsoon make-up 101

It may be soggy and dreary outdoors, but your appearance needn't be that way. After all, no matter how beautiful your skin is, monsoon can make it look cakey and unattractive, especially if you go wrong with the makeup. We picked up five makeup essentials that are completely indispensable this season. Here goes...

Say no to foundation Always remember, when it comes to monsoon and makeup, less is more. Go for a light base primer (oil-free) and use powder to keep it in place. Although most women prefer cream-based makeup, it's advisable to avoid them, as the skin may look sweaty and unsightly. Make matte primer your best friend this season for an even coverage and blemish-free look.

Bright eye colours? Yes! Opt for bright hues like turquoise, teal, blue and orange in eye shadows. If you wish to go lighter on your eyes, go for pop coloured eye pencils. Mascara isn't a great make-up accessory during monsoon, but you can choose a waterproof one if you must. Rain-smudged kohl will also darken your eyes. Keep your brows in shape so you don't have to deal with dripping eyebrow pencil colour.

Pink lips Avoid glossy lip-colours and switch to matte lipsticks during monsoon to keep your appearance neat. If you are going bold on the eyes, go easy on the lips. In case you're going for an evening soiree, apply a bit of a gloss in the middle to make the lips look fuller. Bright lip shades look best during monsoons so bring out those hot pinks, ruby reds and warm browns!

Tame the mane Monsoon can play havoc on your hair making it frizzy and dull. Use a frizz- free serum to tame your hair. A ponytail (make it on the side for a funkier look) will save you on a bad hair day. You can also twist the front layers of your hair and tie it back in an elegant bun. Curl your hair and leave it open for an effortlessly casual daytime look.

Rain-kissed cheeks For a subtle tint on your cheekbones, opt for a cream-based blush in shades of pink, coral and red. But then again, moderation is the key. Some light strokes on the cheekbones will do the trick. If the blush gets smeared in the rain, use a blotting paper to absorb the water. Do not rub it or apply powder, as it will only make it look worse. Simply wipe away the smudged portion and leave it at that.
