There is no particular time to eat sweets, the craving may strike anytime. But gone are the days when sweet meant having a mouthful of gulab jamun or a black forest pastry.

Welcome to the delicious world of patisseries that are now part of the city's landscape which offer a fare of exotic, global desserts. So, it's time for dessert hopping.

A brightly coloured pile of ice shavings topped with a variety of nuts and condensed or evaporated milk is Singapore's contribution to the city's global desserts. Known to be a favourite with kids, you could say kachang is the videshi counterpart of our mawa gola dish. Thai desserts like tob tim krob, (a water chestnut preparation) and dawa lama and Korean dessert darsaan — crispy fried noodles sweetened with honey and topped with sesame for some extra flavour and crunch, served with some luscious icecream are really popular now. Says chef Mrinmoy Pal, "Gujaratis are extremely well traveled and their love for sweets is well-known. Now most of them are too eager to try the global desserts."

Berliners — German doughnuts filled with custardy goodness, cannoli — crisp rolls from Italy filled with fruity creams and gelatos, charlotte — a French cold cake made of sponge, fruit puree and cream and English banoffee pies — a pile of bananas, toffee and cream all laden on to a perfect pie crust, these are the hot favourites now. Says, Sumiti Singh, owner of a French patisserie "Amdavadis are open to experiments in food." So it's not surprising when you see city youngsters taking to French Framboisiers, a delectable raspberry based dessert and panna cotta, a delicate, melt in the mouth pudding from Italy.

The love child of the flaky French classic croissant and the American staple doughnut resulted in thin layers of buttery, melt-in-the-mouth pastry shaped like a large doughnut and topped with a dollop of chocolate.

And you thought this would not be available in Ahmedabad? Says Rushina Doctor, a student, "Previously I used to ask my friends coming from Mumbai to get me doughnuts. Now, we have our fair share of doughnuts and croissants and also the cronut." American bundt cakes — a light, moist cake with a crumbly crust drizzled with various fruity concoctions are popular too. Says Aastha Gandhi, owner of a European dessert cafe, "Amdavadis are global when it comes to food and specially desserts. Nobody here says no to a slice of gourmet goodness."
