Your dog is entitled to a makeover too, but how much is too much when it comes to hair dyes for your pet?

Are you bored of looking at your dog's coat day in and day out? Want your furry friend to have something other than his brown, black, white or patchy colour? Dog owners in the city are opting for hair dyes for their pets, and paying through their nose for it since it does not come cheap.

Says pet groomer Kashika Arora, "These dyes come in a variety of exciting options. You can colour co-ordinate your hair with your dog's to make a style statement. Since the colours are imported from the US, they are tad expensive. But the demand is growing, as they are safe and can jazz up the way your pet looks."

Also, dog hair dyes are temporary. You can dye your dog for a month or just a day.

You can even opt for highlights. The process, though quite simple, entails a hefty bill, since the special colours last for just two days once the can is opened.

Says pet expert Goutam Guha, "Colouring pets is very new in India, and people are slowly warming up to the trend. This practice is gaining most popularity in Mumbai and Delhi."

Veterinarian Aparajita Chakraborty cautions that it can be harmful for dogs who have skin infections. "These colours are safe and have no side-effects, but
one needs to check whether the dog is suffering from any skin infection. If so, it
has to be treated first. Moreover, the colouring should ideally be done by a professional groomer."

Some pet lovers, however, are wary of going overboard with colours on dog fur as it is very sensitive. "I am very particular about my pets. I do indulge in makeovers for my dogs as I believe that they should have fun too. But I ensure that it does not have an adverse effect on their skin and fur. If need be, I take the vet's advice on it," says Radha Apte, who owns a pug and a springer spaniel.

Children with pets are delighted. Ten-year-old Kashyap Mimani thinks his greatest companion Softy looked really cool after a makeover. He says, "I had heard about birthday makeovers and though Softy has his big day in February, we couldn't manage to give him a makeover then. So I gave him one now. He's looking great!"
