Restaurant review: Rainbow

When four young brains, influenced by pranic healing, get together beyond profession, for passion, to make a difference, there's got to be more than meets the eye.

The new natural and organic Cafe Rainbow at posh south Kolkata is indeed worth a visit. We met a bright young man who explained to us how living naturally helps wash away diseases from our bodies. First we need to change our salt and oil — use natural salts and cold pressed oil — and the body responds immediately. We settle down to try the all organic vegetarian menu.

Decor
A tiny store within a day spa makes space for a cafe-cumretail for Rainbow. Rather plain Jane, with two cane tables, it is hardly a cafe! The rainbow effect is actually from the series of packaged products on the shelves. We feel quite trapped, till we are shown out — a splash of green garden area with cane furniture strewn around, rather hot during the day, but soothing and perfect for an early evening organic rendezvous! We settle back indoor, in air conditioned comfort, promising ourselves to
return for the dose of fresh air experience.

Food
The menu stumps us! For one, it is larger than life for the size of the cafe and sports a Day's Special chalk board. The dishes — using products from different parts of the country, grown naturally mostly by NGOs — actually touch our heart. We trash the promotional Bengali menu and go for the regular. Seabuckthorn Crush ( 80), Grape Juice ( 60), Cheese Chilli Toast ( 160), Quattro Formaggi Pizza ( 300), Aglio e Olio Pepperonchini ( 250), Muffin ( 40). It continues in retail therapy with packaged spinach soup, tomato soup and sweet corn soup ( 40 each), rasam powder and s a m b h a r powder ( 50 each), flax chikki ( 50), spicy Italian mix ( 90) and sea salt ( 30).

Plus & Minus
The richness of the juices are in their descriptions — the seabuckthorn is omega and vitamin enhancer, the grape an antioxidant boost — chilled and acidic, they have no smell of added preservatives. The chilli cheese toast is excellent, straight from the oven — with a bruschetta like appearance, not miserly in using artisanal cheese from far away Kodaikanal, spiced up with chopped tomato, capsicum and green chillis. The whole wheat-base pizza, with ample mix of four cheese and sprinklers of spicy Italian mix and Himalayan herb salt off the shelf, is refreshing with more crusty substance than paper-thin or fat flour base. The al dente wheat pasta makes a faultless aglio olio with a touch of veggies. However, the whole meal lacked greens — roughage actually. The wheat muffin is brittle, result of overnight storage, but the sample of the hotflaxseed bread with peanut butter leaves a lingering satisfaction. I am so going back.
