Admit it, yesterday as the hot, humid pre-monsoon sun soaked the energy out of your body, you reached out for a can of cola. Thirst quenching with an added short burst of energy. But, was it worth it? The latest ad by a cola giant had buyers cycle for 20 minutes before they could reach out for their can -because that's how long it takes to burn the 140 calories hidden in that cool metallic cylinder. You didn't know that, did you?
We got macrobiotic nutritionist Shonali Sabherwal to reveal the calorie content behind some irresistible foods, and drag down their calorie count. But not before you test your math.
1. How many calories does a cup of home-microwaved buttered pop-corn pack in?
a) 75
b) 100
c) 140
d) 180
Answer A One cup of plain popcorn, says Sabherwal, contains 50 calories. Add a gram of butter to it, and you add 25 more. Remember, corn is essentially carbohydrates, and butter is fat -both main calorie sources.
There's little protein in there. At the movies, on an average, the smallest portion of popcorn you get is equal to three cups. That's 225 calories before interval.
2. You junked the cupcake in January and satisfied your sugar cravings with frozen yoghurt. How many calories do you add in 100 g of frozen yoghurt?
a) 90
b) 120
c) 160
d) 200
Answer C That, however, points out Sabherwal, is less than half a scoop of frozen yoghurt. Considering that most people have two scoops, if not more, that's 320 calories consumed. Toppings like granola, fruits preserved in sugar syrup, and chocolate are add-ons.
3. A serving of two pieces of a raw tuna sushi roll will cost you:
a) 40
b) 60
c) 70
d) 150
Answer B Most of the calories in sushi comes from the carbs in the rice, packed with sugar and starch.
Most professional houses mix the rice, which is already sweet, with sugar. Eight per cent of the calories comes from the tuna, which gives you some protein.
4. You dress the salad with olive oil and think you've made a healthy choice. How many calories does 1 tbsp of olive oil dressing contain?
a) 75
b) 120
c) 150
d) 175
Answer A However, points out Sabherwal, olive oil is one of the healthier oils to use as dressing. "It's good fat and gives the body what it needs to transport nutrients," she says, adding that those who want to cut back on calories need to ensure that they bring it down to half a tablespoon.
5. Sada dosa is the street food's special diet dish. How many calorie does it contain?
a) 50
b) 80
c) 120
d) 140
Answer B Remember, this doesn't include the calories from the chutney and sambhar. Most of the calories in the dosa, says Sabherwal, come from the rice used to make the batter, and oil used on the tawa. "When you make it at home, brush the pan with a drop of oil," she adds, suggesting that you can even make the batter from brown rice. While this won't bring down the calories by much, the body will absorb brown rice better, helping control blood glucose levels.
6. How many calories in a falafel roll?
a) 350
b) 473
c) 563
d) 658
Answer D The calories come from two sources -the maida that the roll is made of, and the deep fried falafels. Both are unhealthy, though most people think this is a healthy choice. Why not bake falafels at home? Instead of maida, use wholewheat or wholegrain atta for the wrap.
7. You don't like dahi and opt for flavoured yoghurt. Did the bargain pay off? 150 grams in a cup will cost you how many calories?
a) 75
b) 100
c) 250
d) 350
Answer B If you think that's less, think about this: The average serving of flavoured yoghurt is around 250 g, so you end up packing in nearly 200 calories. Most of it, says Sabherwal, comes from added sugars and fruit essence. If the yoghurt is made using skimmed milk, it will contain around 120 calories per cup.
8. At the bar, you decide to switch the fries with roasted peanuts. Here's how many calories a mere 25 g will cost you...
a) 50
b) 70
c) 150
d) 300
Answer C One peanut contains 10-12 calories. A handful of peanuts costs you a massive 200 calories. And if you are eating salted peanuts, you are consuming as much as 200 mg of salt in just half a cup. You are doing your contours much service considering sodium causes water retention and bloating.
9. When your dietician asks you to switch from fried potato chips to grilled paneer, she knows her stuff. How much will one piece of Tandoori paneer tikka cost you?
a) 40
b) 50
c) 60
d) 80
Answer A The calories come from unsaturated fat in the dairy. However, paneer is high in protein and recommended because of its benefits. Request the kitchen not to brush it with oil or butter, and keep the unsaturated fat content low.
10. Instead of red velvet cake, you opted for carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. How many calories will one slice of this cake cost you?
a) 280
b) 300
c) 350
d) 500
Answer A Carrot cake is a better alternative than red velvet. The calories are thanks to maida and oil used in its preparation. You end up using less sugar in this one since carrots are naturally sweet. Scrape off the cream cheese topping, and you cut down on more calories.
