Too many bad hair days in summer? Blame this on the sun, because your hair gets easily damaged under the scorching sunlight, which contains UVA, UVB and UVC rays that attack the cuticles.

Says dermatologist Dr Shefali Trasi-Nerurkar, "The ultraviolet rays of the sun penetrate the hair's deepest layer called cortex and damages the hair proteins, leading to loss of hair strength and elasticity. It damages the colour producing cells (melanin) in the roots of hair and fades out hair colour."

A few solutions
Primarily, try and stay out of the harsh afternoon sun as hair colour also fades faster due to this, says Natasha. Other techniques include:

- Wearing a cap/hat or carrying an umbrella.
- Use leave-in conditioners with adequate Sun Protection Factor (SPF).
- A bi-weekly oil massage.
- Not using the blowdryer. Also, avoiding hair gels.

Summer hair masks to try
Moisturising: Mix three tbsp each of coconut milk and castor oil. Apply this on the hair and leave it on for an hour. Rinse out with warm water.

Softness: Try a banana-almond mask. Mash a banana and add a few drops of almond oil, mix and massage this on the hair. Rinse after 20 minutes.
